Overview

Gumroad is a sales platform for creators offering digital products, services, memberships, and courses. It suits sellers who want storefront, delivery, and audience tools in one place. Its range is compelling, but channel-based fees can make it a poor fit for sellers prioritizing low transaction costs.

Key features

Storefront and checkout

Creators can customize a Gumroad storefront, connect a custom domain, or add checkout and follow widgets to an existing site. Those widgets require the ability to edit the site's HTML, so sellers who cannot modify their site may be better served by the standalone storefront. Payments can be one-time, recurring, fixed-length, or pay-what-you-want in different currencies.

Memberships and digital delivery

Memberships can unlock a content library, with billing schedules including monthly, quarterly, biannual, and yearly. That flexibility works for ongoing communities and time-limited programs alike. Gumroad supports PDF, ePub, and Mobi product versions, can generate software license keys, and offers lightweight DRM. Unique download links, purchaser IP tracking, video streaming, and PDF stamping add protection, though these measures are not a substitute for complete control over copied digital files.

Audience and measurement

Creators can import an email list, export followers and customers, send broadcasts, and create automated workflows. Sales analytics and support for Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, and TikTok Pixel give sellers several ways to follow performance. Gumroad does not support Facebook Conversion API server-side, although creators may send events through Gumroad Ping; sellers dependent on that server-side integration should account for the gap.

Tax, payouts, and security

Gumroad says it has handled worldwide sales tax collection and remittance as merchant of record since January 1, 2025. That can reduce tax administration for creators selling internationally. Payout methods depend on country, with direct deposit or PayPal among the options. Two-factor authentication is on by default, and login tokens go to the registered email address.

Creators can make an application for the Gumroad API in account settings. The platform also offers iOS and Android apps; buyers can access their Library in either one.

Pricing

Gumroad has a free plan, but its selling fees are substantial enough to factor into every price. Direct sales through a profile or direct link incur 10% + $0.50 per transaction. Sales to new customers through Discover incur 30% per transaction. There is no published subscription price for these sales options; the fee is tied to transactions rather than a stated monthly plan charge.

Direct sales make the most sense for creators who bring their own audience and want to avoid Discover's higher marketplace fee. Discover may be useful when new-customer marketplace exposure is worth the larger cut. The fixed $0.50 component also weighs more heavily on lower-priced products, while the 10% rate reduces proceeds on higher-priced sales. Compare the fees against your expected order value and sales source before choosing Gumroad.

Platforms

Gumroad supports web, iOS, Android, and API access. Its mobile apps give buyers access to their Library; creators can use the API through an application created in account settings.

Who it's for

Gumroad is a strong candidate for independent creators selling downloadable products, courses, or memberships who want storefront customization, flexible billing, audience communications, and worldwide tax handling together. It is less attractive to sellers whose margins cannot absorb its transaction fees, who require Facebook Conversion API server-side support, or who cannot edit website HTML but need embedded checkout.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple payment models and membership schedules serve both one-off products and recurring content.
Pros: Email tools, storefront options, and digital delivery are combined with sales analytics and an API.
Pros: Merchant-of-record tax collection and remittance can simplify international sales administration.
Cons: Direct sales cost 10% + $0.50 per transaction, and Discover sales cost 30% per transaction.
Cons: Website widgets require HTML editing, limiting their fit for sellers without site-code access.
Cons: Facebook Conversion API server-side is unsupported, and payout methods vary by country.

Verdict

Choose Gumroad if you are a creator who wants digital-product or membership sales, audience tools, and merchant-of-record tax handling in one platform. Its flexibility is the main reason to pick it; its transaction fees are the clearest reason to look elsewhere.
