Overview

Groki is a browser-based meme maker for people who want AI-assisted captions, face swaps, and short animated clips alongside template-based creation. It is a strong fit for creators who value those tools and can work within a credit budget; its five-second video ceiling and marked free exports make it less compelling for watermark-free or longer-form output.

Creation takes place in a canvas editor and exports still memes as HD PNG or animations as MP4. On phones and tablets, Groki runs in a mobile browser with an adapted editor, so an app installation is unnecessary.

Key features

Templates, captions, and face swaps

Groki combines meme templates with AI-written captions and template recommendations, using Grok from xAI for those functions. A caption costs 1 credit, while a face swap costs 12 credits and uses Flux 2 Pro Edit via Fal.ai. The low caption cost suits frequent wording experiments; face swaps consume credits more quickly.

Short video animation

Image-to-video animation uses PixVerse v4.5 and costs 30 credits for a five-second MP4. That is useful for turning a still gag into a brief clip, but the length limit and high per-action cost make Groki a poor fit for creators who need longer videos or animate often. GIF creation is not available.

Editor, integrations, and privacy

The browser canvas editor handles creation and HD PNG export. Free exports carry a small “made with groki.meme” mark; subscribers can disable it in Account settings.

An authenticated MCP server connects with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and other compatible assistants to create three private drafts and provide an editor link. Memes remain private unless published, and Groki says it does not sell personal information. Submitted media and prompts may be sent to AI, hosting, storage, authentication, analytics, and payment providers. Generated and uploaded media may remain in a user's gallery until deleted; users can permanently delete their account and saved media in Account settings.

Groki says memes may be used commercially, subject to rights attached to the underlying template and uploaded images.

Pricing

The free plan includes 20 welcome credits, enough to try the credit-based tools but not a watermark-free export: free-tier exports carry the Groki mark. A one-time Credit bundle costs 1.00 USD per once and provides 100 credits per $1 with no subscription, making it the flexible option for occasional use beyond the free credits.

Starter costs 4.99 USD per month and bills 550 credits/month. It is aimed at occasional creators and can be canceled anytime; subscribers can turn off the export mark. Connoisseur costs 14.99 USD per month and bills 1,800 credits/month, fitting frequent creators who need a larger monthly credit allowance. It can also be canceled anytime. In either subscription, the credit budget still matters: one animation uses 30 credits, compared with 1 for a caption.

Platforms

Groki works on the web and in mobile browsers on Android and iOS devices, with an editor adapted for phone and tablet screens. It has no mobile apps, so choose another option if a native app is essential.

Who it's for

Groki suits meme creators who want AI captions, face swaps, and brief video animation in one browser editor, especially those willing to manage credits and accept the free export mark. It is less suitable for GIF creation, longer clips, or users who want watermark-free exports without a subscription.

Pros and cons

Pros: Templates, AI captions, face swaps, and five-second video animation cover several meme formats in one editor.
Pros: Mobile-browser editing avoids an app install, and the one-time credit bundle lets occasional creators avoid a subscription.
Pros: Users can delete their account and saved media from Account settings, and memes are private unless published.
Cons: Free exports carry a Groki mark, so clean exports require a subscription.
Cons: Face swaps cost 12 credits and five-second animations cost 30, which can make those features credit-intensive.
Cons: Videos are limited to five seconds and GIF creation is unavailable.

Verdict

Choose Groki if you want template-based memes enhanced with AI captions, face swaps, and short video in a mobile-friendly browser editor. Its flexible credit bundle and cancel-anytime subscriptions give different ways to pay, but the free export mark, credit costs, and five-second video limit are strong reasons to look elsewhere if clean exports or more substantial video are priorities.
