Overview

Google Photos is a photo and video library with backup, search, editing, and sharing tools. It suits people who want those jobs in one service across phones and computers. Its strongest draw is the combination; its main compromise is that the free 15 GB allowance is shared with Gmail and Google Drive.

Key features

Backup and library tools

Backup can run automatically after you enable it, or you can save items manually. Support for full-resolution RAW images and 4K video makes Photos relevant to more than casual phone snapshots, though Original quality backups count against the shared storage quota. That makes the free plan less comfortable for large or high-resolution libraries.

Face search and shared albums help organize and circulate a library. The example natural-language search has narrower reach: it is limited to eligible US users aged 18 or older whose account language is English (United States), with Face Groups and location estimates enabled. Face Groups can be turned off; Google says groups and labels are visible only to the user and are deleted from the account when the feature is disabled.

Editing, sharing, and connections

The app includes AI editing tools such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur, adding a practical reason to keep editing alongside backup. Photos, videos, and albums can be shared with people who do not use Google Photos, including through apps such as WhatsApp and Snapchat. Camera and digitization partners include Canon and Photomyne; print partners include Walgreens and Shutterfly, while supported TV platforms include Google TV and Samsung.

Google says Photos data is encrypted in transit with HTTPS and encrypted at rest. It also says it does not sell users’ photos, videos, or personal information, or use photos and videos for advertising. Users can delete or export content they add.

Pricing

Google Photos is freemium. The free plan includes 15 GB shared across Photos, Gmail, and Drive, so it can be a sensible starting point for a modest library but may be exhausted sooner by email and Drive use or Original quality backups.

Basic: $1.99 USD per month for 100 GB and up to 5 additional people. It is the least expensive listed paid option, but remains a shared storage allowance rather than space reserved for Photos.
Google AI Plus: $9.99 USD per month for 2 TB and up to 5 additional people, a better fit for larger libraries and shared household storage.
Google AI Pro: $19.99 USD per month for 5 TB and up to 5 additional people, for users who need substantially more shared capacity.

The listed US plans are billed monthly. Google One plans are also listed in Japan: Google One Basic (100 GB) costs 290.00 JPY per month, Google AI Plus (2 TB) costs 1450.00 JPY per month, and Google AI Pro (5 TB) costs 2900.00 JPY per month. Each shares storage across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail with up to 5 others. Those localized prices and terms should not be confused with the US-dollar plans.

Platforms

Google Photos works on Android and iOS, and can also be used on desktop and tablet devices. That broad device reach makes it a practical option for a library accessed from both mobile and larger screens.

Who it's for

Choose Photos if you want backup, editing, search, and sharing in one cross-device library, particularly if sharing albums with people outside the service matters. It is less compelling for anyone who wants a large, dedicated photo quota without sharing it with Gmail and Drive, or whose natural-language search needs do not meet its eligibility conditions.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automatic or manual backup, RAW image support, and 4K video storage cover a broad range of libraries.
Pros: AI editing and sharing with non-users reduce the need to separate editing and distribution from storage.
Pros: Face Groups controls, deletion and export options, and Google’s stated encryption and advertising policies address privacy and account control.
Cons: Free storage is only 15 GB and is shared with Gmail and Drive, limiting its usefulness for growing libraries.
Cons: Original quality backups use the quota, so high-resolution collections can increase storage pressure.
Cons: The example natural-language search requires specific age, location, language, and settings eligibility.

Alternatives

For a focused scanning workflow, SlideScan by Photomyne offers limited slide scanning, saving, and sharing free, with a yearly recurring membership option. Choose it when digitizing slides is the priority rather than maintaining a general photo library.

instax UP! is a free Android and iOS app, a narrower fit for readers seeking a no-cost mobile option. For other category choices, browse Photo Storage Services, Photo Management Software, Photo Scanning Software, or Mobile Scanning Apps.

Verdict

Google Photos is the right choice for people who want a versatile, cross-device place to back up, edit, find, and share photos and videos. Its main reason to choose it is that those tools work together, including sharing beyond the Photos user base. Look elsewhere if a 15 GB shared free quota will not hold your library or you need a larger photo-only allowance.
