Overview

StarForce Reader is a free app for reading PDF, EPUB, SFPDF, and PCDOC files, with protected-video playback on mobile devices. It is best suited to people who receive publications or video protected with StarForce and need a way to open them. For ordinary reading it covers the basics, but its protected-document rules can make moving or reinstalling less straightforward.

Key features

Tabs, text and title search, and a saved last reading position provide practical ways to navigate documents and return to where you stopped. Mobile playback adds a use beyond ebooks and PDFs, though it applies to protected video rather than general video playback. Reader is most compelling when a publisher distributes content in StarForce formats; readers who need broader document-editing or annotation tools should look elsewhere.

Protected files bring conditions that matter in daily use. On Windows, opening a protected document for the first time activates it and ties it to that computer’s software and hardware configuration. Transfer may be blocked because deactivation can be disabled, and printing works only when the publisher permits it in the serial number settings. On Android, uninstalling Reader also removes the protected-document license, so reinstalling requires another activation. These restrictions make Reader a less convenient choice for frequent device changes, printing, or reinstallations.

The maker says installation does not promote third-party programs or utilities, and describes the app as small and quick to open. Those claims suggest a focused reader, but they do not change the limits imposed by protected content. StarForce provides a technical-support feedback form and recommends SF Helper for diagnosing problems with protected applications.

Pricing

StarForce Reader costs 0.00 USD per free. The free document viewer covers its stated reading and mobile protected-video uses without a paid tier to weigh against those restrictions. It is a straightforward fit if you need to open supported files; the trade-off is not price, but whether publishers’ activation, printing, and transfer rules suit the way you read.

Platforms

Downloads are offered for Windows, Linux, RED OS, macOS, Android, and iOS. The product’s format coverage includes ordinary PDF and EPUB plus protected SFPDF and PCDOC. Mobile devices also support protected-video playback. The platform range is useful for readers with varied devices, but protected-document activation can still tie access to a specific computer or require another activation after an Android reinstall.

Who it's for

Choose StarForce Reader if a publisher supplies StarForce-protected documents or mobile video, or if you want a free app for basic PDF and EPUB reading. It is a poorer fit if you regularly move protected documents between computers, need assured printing, or want a license to survive uninstalling on Android without another activation.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access to PDF, EPUB, SFPDF, and PCDOC viewing makes it useful for both everyday documents and StarForce-protected publications.
Pros: Tabs, search, and saved reading position support basic document navigation; mobile protected-video playback adds another supported content type.
Pros: Downloads span desktop and mobile systems, including RED OS.
Cons: Protected-document printing depends on publisher permission, so printing cannot be assumed.
Cons: Windows activation is bound to the computer configuration, and transfer may be unavailable if deactivation is disabled.
Cons: Android uninstallation removes the protected-document license, requiring another activation after reinstall.

Alternatives

PDF Readers is the broader category to consider if your priority is choosing among document readers rather than opening StarForce-protected files.

For application-protection needs rather than document reading, Digital.ai Application Protection offers paid, per-application licensing with on-site deployment and customizable protections in its Premium plan.

Virbox Protector is a paid alternative with a free trial and separate personal and enterprise X86 licenses, priced at 2499.00 CNY per once and 6499.00 CNY per once respectively.

LIAPP is another paid option with a free trial; its Onsite plan charges 39.99 USD per once, with each protected application consuming one ticket.

Google Play Billing is another listed Android option.

STOVE PC Security SDK is another listed Windows option.

Denuvo Anti-Cheat is a paid alternative for Linux and Windows with a free trial.

Steam Input is a free alternative for API, Linux, macOS, and Windows.

DotFix NiceProtect is a paid Windows alternative with a free trial.

Game DRM Software and Executable Packers are category alternatives for readers comparing software in those areas.

Verdict

StarForce Reader is a sensible free choice when your main need is opening StarForce-protected publications or protected video on mobile, with PDF and EPUB reading as useful extras. Its breadth of supported formats and platforms is appealing, but computer-bound activation, conditional printing, and Android license loss on uninstall are real drawbacks. If those rules fit your reading habits, it covers the job; if you need flexible transfers or predictable printing, choose another reader.
