Overview

SRTGen is a web and API service for creating and localizing subtitles, with transcription, translation, dubbing, caption styling, and export in one workflow. It suits creators and teams publishing video across platforms and languages. Its breadth is useful when localization is recurring work, but the free allowance is small and paid prices rise after two months.

Key features

Upload audio or video to generate editable, time-coded transcripts, then review captions, translate or style them, burn them into video, or export SRT, VTT, ASS, and TXT files. Agent localization also supports JSON export. Speaker identification and brand caption presets add practical controls for polished, repeatable output; this is more capable than a basic transcript generator, though those extras matter less if you only need a subtitle file.

Translation covers 100+ languages, and voice dubbing is part of the same workflow. Voice-clone slots scale from 3 on Free to 100 on Business. SRTGen names OpenAI, Cartesia, and ElevenLabs for synthetic voices. The breadth suits creators adapting videos for different audiences, but adds little for users who do not need translation or dubbing.

SRTGen supports YouTube, TikTok, Reels, Shorts, podcasts, courses, marketing videos, and news content. It also connects to MCP-compatible agents including Codex, Claude, Gemini, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf. Agent localization allows uploads up to 20 GiB and five subtitle export formats; for videos over 200 MB, the recommended workflow extracts a compact MP3 locally while the original video stays on the user's computer for final rendering. A REST API is offered, with full developer API access on higher plans. These options give technical teams more ways to automate localization, but may be unnecessary overhead for a solo creator with a simple captioning job.

Collaborative Workspaces provide invitations, admin, editor, and viewer roles, shared style templates, unified billing and credit pools, and real-time project synchronization. Security controls include TLS/HTTPS in transit, encrypted storage for sensitive credentials, role-based access, and rate limiting. Uploaded files are stored in Backblaze B2, and audio processing may involve AssemblyAI, Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, and Cartesia. Deleted project files are queued for deletion within 30 days; account deletion schedules permanent file deletion within 90 days, while AI processing logs may remain for up to two years. Those retention terms are worth weighing for sensitive material.

Pricing

Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 20 signup credits, 20 transcription minutes, 40 translation minutes, up to 4k speech characters, and 2 GB storage. It exports SRT, VTT, and TXT, but recording is capped at five minutes and 720p. Free also has one seat. That is enough for a trial run, not sustained production.

Starter costs 4.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $8/mo. It includes 360 monthly credits, 360 transcription minutes, 720 translation minutes, 20 GB storage, 10 voice-clone slots, and one seat. It is the sensible step up for an individual social creator who needs regular output but not collaboration.

Pro costs 14.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $24/mo. Its 1,500 monthly credits, 1,500 transcription minutes, 3,000 translation minutes, 100 GB storage, 30 voice-clone slots, and three seats better fit a small localization team. Additional seats cost $3.00 per month on Pro and Business.

Business costs 49.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $69/mo. It raises the allowance to 5,000 monthly credits, 5,000 transcription minutes, 10,000 translation minutes, 500 GB storage, 100 voice-clone slots, and ten seats, making it the fit for higher-volume brand work. Enterprise has custom pricing for bulk processing, automation pipelines, and dedicated agency services. Plans offer monthly billing, yearly billing with a stated 25% saving, and non-expiring top-ups; overage credits cost 1.00 USD per once per 20 Credits. The introductory rates are limited to the first two months, so compare plans at their ongoing prices.

Platforms

SRTGen is available on web and through an API. Its supported content spans major short-form video platforms as well as podcasts, courses, marketing videos, and news.

Who it's for

Choose SRTGen if you regularly transcribe and localize video, need styling or dubbing alongside subtitles, or want a workflow that can extend to collaborators and agent integrations. It is less compelling for occasional captioning, transcript-only work, or anyone who needs generous free usage.

Pros and cons

Pros: Transcription, translation, dubbing, styling, review, and export sit in one workflow, reducing the need to split localization across tools.
Pros: Support for 100+ translation languages, multiple subtitle formats, and MCP agents gives multilingual creators and technical teams useful flexibility.
Pros: Storage and seats scale across plans, with shared workspaces for teams that need roles and templates.
Cons: The free plan's credits, minutes, character cap, and five-minute recording limit make it a constrained test rather than a working tier.
Cons: Starter remains a one-seat plan, while the introductory monthly prices rise after two months.
Cons: Some users may not need the broader localization and automation features that distinguish the service.

Alternatives

Zubtitle is a web, iOS, and Android alternative; its free Bootstrapper tier allows two videos per month, adds a watermark, and limits resolution to 720p, while Guru costs 19.00 USD per month.

Editsub is available on Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, with a free tier of 10 subtitle files and a Pro plan at 48.00 USD per year; consider it if those platform and plan terms better suit your workflow.

GNOME Subtitles is a free Linux subtitle editor for users who prefer that option.

Jubler is a free desktop subtitle editor for Linux, macOS, and Windows; its video preview and audio waveform require VLC.

Subtitle Composer is a free Linux alternative from KDE's open-source software community.

Subtitle Edit is a free and open-source subtitle editor for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Subvideo.ai is a web alternative with guest access limited to one upload per day and a free account allowing three uploads per day.

VideoLocalize is another web and API localization service, with a free tier limited to one account, two jobs, four-minute videos, 1 GB storage, and 10 minutes of machine transcription.

Verdict

SRTGen is a strong fit for creators and localization teams that need more than transcription: its combined translation, dubbing, styling, and export workflow is the main reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if your needs are occasional or transcript-only, or if the free caps and post-introductory pricing make its broader toolkit hard to justify.
