Overview

PowerPoint pairs slide design with collaboration and rehearsal tools. Thousands of customizable templates and Designer recommendations give users a head start on layouts; drawing tools can also turn handwriting into text or shapes. That range makes it a strong fit for varied presentation work, though a template or AI suggestion still needs an editor’s judgment.

Shared decks support real-time co-editing, comments, and @mentions, so teams can develop a presentation in one place. Cameo adds prerecorded video, while Speaker Coach provides feedback on pace and vocabulary. Accessibility Assistant recommends changes to formatting, color, and word choice. Copilot can rewrite, reorganize, or add slides directly, extending assistance from design into content editing.

Key features

Design and editing: Templates, illustration tools, Designer recommendations, and handwriting conversion cover both conventional slide building and drawn input. The free tier offers basic templates, fonts, icons, and stickers, so users wanting more than core tools may need a subscription.
Collaboration: Sharing, live co-editing, comments, and @mentions make group work practical without treating the deck as a static file.
Rehearsal and presentation: Speaker Coach gives feedback on delivery, and Cameo supports prerecorded video within slides. These are useful additions for presenters, not substitutes for preparing the talk.
Microsoft 365 bundle: Paid plans can pair PowerPoint with Word, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, and Teams. That breadth matters most to users who will use the wider suite, rather than someone seeking only occasional slide editing.

Pricing

PowerPoint is freemium. The web version is free and includes sharing, real-time collaboration, basic tools, dictation, and 5 GB of storage. Its basic templates and limited creative toolkit make it a reasonable starting point, but users needing installed apps or more storage should compare paid tiers.

Microsoft PowerPoint: custom pricing. The plan covers one person and 5 GB of cloud storage.

Microsoft 365 Personal: 9.99 USD per month for one person, five devices, and 1 TB of storage. It includes Microsoft Defender, OneDrive ransomware protection, and ongoing support; it is the more suitable individual option for someone who wants the broader Microsoft 365 package. Microsoft 365 Family costs 12.99 USD per month for one to six people, with five devices per person and up to 6 TB of storage (1 TB per person). It makes more sense when several people need access than paying for individual plans.

Microsoft 365 Premium: 19.99 USD per month, includes everything in Family and up to 6 TB of storage. It is an upgrade for households needing the Premium tier, though the included storage ceiling is the same as Family’s.

Business plans: Business Basic costs 7.00 USD per year, billed per user per month and paid yearly; it supports up to 300 users and includes web and mobile Office apps, 1 TB per user, and Teams. Its web-and-mobile scope suits organizations that do not need desktop Office apps. Business Standard with Copilot costs 23.50 USD per year, billed per user per month and paid yearly; it adds desktop apps and Copilot, with the same 300-user ceiling and 1 TB per user. Business Premium with Copilot costs 32.00 USD per year on the same billing basis and adds advanced device management and threat protection to desktop, web, and mobile apps. These business tiers fit organizations choosing by deployment and administration needs, rather than individual slide makers.

Microsoft 365 consumer plans offer a one-month free trial; business plans show a free-trial option. Subscriptions automatically renew at the regular price and selected term unless cancelled in the Microsoft account. Fully installed computer apps work offline, but after 31 days without internet they enter reduced-functionality mode and cannot edit or create documents.

Platforms

PowerPoint is available on the web, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Installed computer apps support offline use, with the 31-day connectivity limit a notable constraint for people who regularly work disconnected.

Who it's for

Choose PowerPoint if you need a full presentation workflow—design, collaboration, rehearsal, and cross-device access—or if your work already centers on Microsoft 365. The free web version suits basic decks and collaborative editing. Look elsewhere if you need more than its basic free toolkit but do not want a recurring subscription, or if extended offline editing is essential.

Pros and cons

Pro: Real-time collaboration includes comments and @mentions, making shared deck development more than simple file exchange.
Pro: Speaker Coach, Cameo, Copilot, and Accessibility Assistant address rehearsal, video, content editing, and accessibility within the presentation workflow.
Pro: Plans span free web access through household and business bundles, with up to 6 TB of Family storage and business options for up to 300 users.
Con: The free tier is limited to basic tools and 5 GB, which may not suit users who want a richer design toolkit or more space.
Con: Installed apps lose editing and creation ability after 31 days without internet, limiting long-term offline work.
Con: Paid subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled, so buyers need to track their chosen term and renewal.

Alternatives

For a different presentation option, browse Presentation software. If storage and file access matter more than slide creation, Google Drive offers a free plan with up to 15 GB of storage. Readers choosing a form tool instead can compare Typeform, whose free plan allows unlimited forms but caps responses at 10 per month; Jotform, Zoho Forms, FormAssembly, Axonator, eCube Apps, and GoFormz are also listed alternatives.

Verdict

PowerPoint is the right choice for people who need dependable presentation creation across web, desktop, and mobile, particularly when collaboration or the wider Microsoft 365 suite matters. Its standout case is the combination of slide-making, team editing, and presentation assistance; look elsewhere if you need extensive offline work or want a more capable design experience without a recurring subscription.
