Overview

GIPHY Create is a free tool for turning images, video, and online media into short GIFs, with editing options for captions, stickers, and cropping. It is best suited to people making quick, shareable clips from material they already have. The short duration ceiling and required desktop sign-in make it less suitable for longer or account-free workflows.

Key features

The maker accepts JPG, PNG, GIF, MP4, MOV, and WebM files, and can import media URLs from GIPHY, YouTube, Vimeo, and other sources. That flexibility helps when a clip is hosted online rather than saved locally. Users can add captions and stickers, edit layers, and crop their work; sticker artwork can be uploaded as JPG or PNG. The maximum GIF length is 15 seconds, so this is a tool for short moments rather than extended clips.

Desktop video uploads must be under 100 MB and less than 15 seconds long. Both limits matter: a clip that exceeds either needs to be reduced before it can be used. Desktop GIF creation also requires signing in to a GIPHY account, which adds friction for occasional users who would rather not create or use an account.

Users can mark a GIF private during creation, but private GIFs are visible only to that user when logged in and cannot be shared. That setting works for personal access, not private collaboration. For GIFs meant to circulate, GIPHY supports sharing through social platforms, text message, and email.

The mobile GIFMaker app can record GIFs and provides captions, effects, stickers, and trimming. Recording directly on a phone is useful when the source is a live moment rather than an existing file, although the stated 15-second maximum still makes it a short-form option.

Pricing

GIPHY Create is free: its GIPHY Create plan costs 0.00 USD per free. That makes it an easy fit for casual creators who want to make and share GIFs without a paid commitment. There is no cheaper tier to compare, but the free offer comes with the 15-second maximum, desktop video size and duration limits, and a desktop account requirement.

GIPHY also offers an API and SDK for apps that want to integrate GIFs, stickers, and other GIPHY content. New API keys begin as beta keys limited to 100 searches or API calls per hour. Production access requires an application and a pricing discussion, so developers should treat that as a separate path rather than an extension of the free creation plan.

Platforms

GIPHY Create is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The desktop maker has the stated video upload limits and sign-in requirement; the mobile app adds GIF recording and trimming. GIPHY says it uses industry-standard techniques to store personal data but cannot guarantee account information security. It also says it complies with the EU-U.S., UK Extension, and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Frameworks for covered personal data transfers. Account or product questions can be directed to GIPHY support.

Who it's for

Choose GIPHY Create if you want a free way to turn a short local or online clip into a decorated GIF, or to record and edit one on a phone. Look elsewhere if your source video is longer than 15 seconds or at least 100 MB for desktop use, if you need desktop creation without signing in, or if a private GIF must be shareable with other people.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad image and video input support, URL imports, and layer editing, captions, stickers, and cropping give creators several ways to assemble and customize a GIF.
Pros: The mobile app can record GIFs and offers trimming and effects, which suits spontaneous phone-based creation.
Pros: The creation plan is free, and GIPHY supports sharing via social platforms, text, and email.
Cons: The 15-second ceiling and desktop upload cap of under 100 MB rule out longer or larger source videos without preparation.
Cons: Desktop GIF creation requires a GIPHY account; private creations cannot be shared, limiting that setting to personal access.

Alternatives

FlexClip is worth considering if you want a free plan that supports videos up to 10 minutes and includes online projects, though it allows 12 projects and one stock video per project. Brush Ninja is a better fit for animation work when you want core tools without an account; its premium monthly plan is 7.00 USD per month and can be canceled any time. For other options, ImgPlay is freemium on iOS and Android, GIF Studio is free on Android, GifLoop is freemium on iOS, Momento is freemium on iOS and macOS, while Giffer and Spritelove are paid iOS options. Verdict

GIPHY Create is a sensible pick for casual creators who want free, short-form GIF editing and direct sharing across web and mobile. Its range of inputs and phone recording make it versatile for quick jobs; choose another tool if you need longer desktop video, account-free desktop creation, or private sharing.
