Overview

Gamma is a PlayStation 1 emulator for Apple devices, aimed at players who want to use their own game files with touch or gamepad controls. Its broad format support and optional cloud sync make it a flexible free choice, though ads and the need to supply games and BIOS files are important trade-offs.

Key features

Touch and gamepad controls give players a choice of input, while save states make it easier to resume outside a game’s own save system. Screenshots, game importing and multi-disc support round out the essentials for managing a PS1 library. Enhanced resolution up to 8× and widescreen options for 3D games offer display adjustments, but their usefulness will depend on the title.

Gamma supports BIN/CUE, CHD, PBP, ISO and MDS disc images, along with 7zip, ZIP, RAR and ECM archives. That breadth accommodates different existing file collections without requiring users to convert everything to one format. RetroAchievements and cheat support are additional options for players who want them.

Optional Gamma Sync connects Google Drive or Dropbox to store and retrieve selected emulator data. Games, BIOS files, memory cards, save states and controller skins normally remain on the device unless a user chooses a transmitting feature, such as Sync or a community submission. The maker describes safeguards including access controls, encrypted network transport where supported, data minimization, validation and rate limiting, but does not guarantee absolute security.

Pricing

Free — 0.00 USD per free. Gamma is free to download and use, with the core emulator features available at no charge. The free version may display advertising through Appodeal and its advertising partners. Gamma Pro – Remove Ads costs $4.99 for users who want to remove ads; no other paid plan is described.

Neither the free app nor the ad-removal purchase supplies commercial PlayStation games or proprietary BIOS files. Users are responsible for using content they have a legal right to use.

Platforms

Gamma supports iOS, iPadOS and macOS, making it the Apple-focused option for players who want to use the emulator across those platforms. Android, Linux and Windows users will need another emulator.

Who it's for

Gamma suits Apple-device owners who already have legally usable PS1 game and BIOS files and value flexible input, format support, save states or optional cloud storage. It is a poor fit for anyone expecting an included game library or BIOS, or who wants to avoid advertising without paying for ad removal.

Pros and cons

Pros: Support for several disc-image and archive formats reduces file-conversion friction.
Pros: Touch and gamepad controls, save states and multi-disc support cover a useful range of play and library needs.
Pros: Optional Google Drive or Dropbox sync can store and retrieve selected emulator data.
Cons: The free version may show ads, with ad removal costing $4.99.
Cons: Users must supply their own games and proprietary BIOS files, and must have the right to use that content.

Alternatives

PlayStation Emulators is the broader category for comparing options. Avocado is another free option across Android, Linux, macOS and Windows, but it is in early development, requires a PlayStation BIOS and has variable game compatibility. DuckStation is free and supports Android, Linux, macOS and Windows; its Android app requires a user-provided BIOS image and legally purchased, dumped games.

Vita3K is a free, open-source emulator for Android, Linux, macOS and Windows, though it is experimental and commercial game compatibility varies. QuackStation is another free option for Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. ScePSX is also free and supports Android, Linux, macOS and Windows.

For Android-only choices, FPse costs 2.99 USD per once, while XEBRA is free. Jam Pad is a freemium option for Android.

Verdict

Choose Gamma if you want a free PS1 emulator for Apple devices with broad file support, flexible controls and optional cloud sync. Its main draw is the combination of those capabilities across iOS, iPadOS and macOS; look elsewhere if you need Android or desktop support beyond macOS, want an included game library, or do not want ads or an ad-removal purchase.
