Overview

Frappe HR is open-source software for HR and payroll operations, with tools spanning hiring, employee management, attendance, leave, expenses, performance, payroll, and income tax. It suits organizations that want configurable workflows and control over deployment; the trade-off is that hosting and implementation can add meaningful work and cost.

Its breadth and ERPNext accounting integration make it a strong candidate for teams consolidating HR and payroll processes. Organizations seeking a ready-to-run service with minimal setup or functional support should compare simpler alternatives. Browse HR Software for more options.

Key features

Hiring and employee lifecycle

Recruitment covers staffing plans, job listings, applicant tracking, interview scheduling, feedback, offers, and analytics. That gives teams a path from workforce planning through candidate decisions, while employee records and onboarding carry the process into employment. This breadth is useful when hiring and core HR need to sit in one system.

Workforce administration

Shifts, attendance, time tracking, leave, expenses, and performance management cover recurring workforce operations alongside employee lifecycle management. For organizations moving beyond basic personnel records, this range can reduce fragmentation; teams needing only a narrow HR tool may not benefit enough to justify configuring a broader platform.

Payroll and integrations

Payroll supports rule-based salary structures, bulk assignments, regular runs, off-cycle payments, multi-currency payroll, employee loans, and timesheet-based payroll. These options suit varied payroll processes, while integration with ERPNext accounting, biometric tools, banks, and third-party software can connect HR work to adjacent systems. The result depends on implementation and integration choices rather than being a turnkey fit for every organization.

Customization, security, and mobile access

The Frappe Framework allows custom forms, fields, workflows, reports, and dashboards, giving organizations room to adapt the system to their processes. Role-based permissions, audit logs, and activity trails support oversight; Frappe Cloud provides regular backups and encrypted communication. Smartphone access is available through a mobile app, and Android, iOS, web, API, and self-hosted deployments are supported.

Pricing

Frappe HR itself is free open-source software under AGPL-3.0. That removes a software license charge, but not the cost of running and implementing it. Self-hosted VPS hosting is estimated to start around $40/month, with email, security, backups, setup, and maintenance costing extra. Self-hosting is a better fit for teams able to manage infrastructure or arrange implementation help than for buyers expecting a fully managed HR service.

Frappe Cloud pricing is for hosting, not a paid feature tier for HR:

Frappe Cloud Sites: 5.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for 1 site.
Frappe Cloud Servers: 20.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for multiple sites and benches.
Frappe Cloud Servers - Dedicated: 125.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for multiple sites and benches.
Frappe Cloud Sites hosting: 5.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for a single site on shared servers with multiple apps.
Frappe Cloud Servers hosting: 125.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, with dedicated server isolation, snapshots, autoscaling, and global data centre locations.

The site and server options distinguish a single site from multiple sites and benches; the hosting options distinguish shared hosting from dedicated-server features. These prices are starting points, so teams should account for the separate implementation and operating costs relevant to their setup. A free trial is offered. Organizations can self-implement or use certified Frappe partners; Product Warranty covers bug fixes, not functional support.

Platforms

Frappe HR supports web, Android, iOS, API, and self-hosted use. The mix accommodates smartphone access and organizations that want to operate their own deployment, but self-hosting brings infrastructure and maintenance responsibilities.

Who it's for

Frappe says its modular product suits both small businesses and enterprises, including organizations with thousands of employees. Its broad workflow coverage and customization are most compelling for teams with processes to configure, integrations to make, or deployment choices to manage. Businesses that prioritize low-overhead setup and ongoing functional support may find the implementation model less attractive.

Pros and cons

Pro: Recruitment, lifecycle, attendance, leave, performance, payroll, and tax workflows span much of the employee journey in one product.
Pro: Custom forms, workflows, reports, dashboards, and integration options give teams meaningful scope to fit the system to their operations.
Pro: The AGPL-3.0 software is free, and the product is positioned for organizations from small businesses through enterprises.
Con: Free software does not mean free operation: self-hosting starts around $40/month for a VPS, with several operating costs extra.
Con: Product Warranty excludes functional support, so teams that need implementation or ongoing functional guidance may need partner support.
Con: The range of deployment and customization options makes Frappe HR a weaker fit for buyers seeking a minimal-setup, ready-to-run service.

Verdict

Choose Frappe HR if you want broad HR and payroll coverage with open-source deployment and room to customize workflows. Its central advantage is flexibility across processes and hosting choices; its central drawback is the responsibility and added cost of implementation, infrastructure, and support. Look elsewhere if you need a low-maintenance service with functional support included.
