Overview

Flat is score-writing software that combines notation, playback, and live collaboration across web, desktop, and mobile. It is best suited to composers, arrangers, and educators working together on scores. Its free tier covers smaller projects, but a 15-score cap and Power-only cloud sync make the paid plan the more practical choice for ongoing, multi-device work.

Key features

Flat supports tablature and parts extraction alongside standard score writing. MusicXML and MIDI import and export help move work between compatible tools, while desktop users can also export PDF, MP3, and WAV. PDF import is less convenient: it requires Power or paid credits, so users who regularly start from existing PDF scores should account for that extra cost.

Collaboration is a central strength: multiple people can write, edit, and comment on a score from different devices in real time. That makes Flat a good fit for shared arranging and classroom work, rather than just solo composition. The free plan includes collaboration, playback, and essential notation tools, but limits users to 15 scores.

Flat supports more than 180 instruments, with HQ studio instruments on Power. Basic includes 30 instruments; Power adds the broader selection, custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, and advanced playback. Users can compose, edit, and play scores offline, but cloud sync requires Power. That separation may suit occasional offline sessions, but it is a drawback for anyone who expects their work to stay synchronized across devices without a subscription.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Flat Basic	Free	Core notation tools, playback, real-time collaboration, MIDI device transcription, 30 instruments, up to 15 scores, MusicXML and MIDI import, and export and printing with Flat branding.
Flat Desktop Free	Free	Desktop app with up to 15 scores.
Flat Power Monthly	$9.99 per month	Unlimited scores, more than 180 instruments including HQ instruments, MusicXML and MIDI import and export, custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, advanced playback, and priority support.
Flat Power Yearly	$49.99 per year	Power features, billed annually; Flat states a 58% saving compared with monthly billing.
Flat Power Lifetime	Custom pricing	Lifetime option with premium Power features.

Basic is a reasonable starting point for a small score library, and the free desktop app is useful for users who want to work on a computer without a software charge. Both free options retain the 15-score limit. Power suits users who need unlimited scores, the expanded instrument set, or cloud sync. The annual plan costs less than paying monthly over a full year, while the lifetime option has custom pricing. Flat for Education can be tried free for one month and integrates with Google for Education, Microsoft Office 365, and Canvas.

Platforms

Flat is available on the web, iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows. Offline composing, editing, and playback are supported; cloud sync requires Flat Power.

Who it's for

Flat makes the most sense for composers, arrangers, and educators who want notation, playback, and real-time score collaboration in one tool. Its free plan can serve learners or occasional writers whose libraries stay within 15 scores. Users with larger collections, a need for cloud sync, or a preference for more instruments will have a stronger case for Power. It is a less direct fit for workflows built around importing PDFs, since that requires Power or paid credits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Real-time writing, editing, and commenting support collaborative scores across devices, including on the free plan.
Pros: MusicXML and MIDI import and export, tablature, parts extraction, and desktop PDF, MP3, and WAV export cover a range of notation workflows.
Pros: Offline composing, editing, and playback let users continue working without an internet connection.
Cons: The free tier's 15-score limit can constrain a growing library.
Cons: Cloud sync is reserved for Power, limiting seamless multi-device work on the free plan.
Cons: PDF import requires Power or paid credits, adding friction for users who begin with PDF scores.

Alternatives

For a wider set of tools to compare, browse Music notation software or Music Collaboration Software.

Choose Soundtrap if you want a freemium music tool with a free account, a free trial, and support across mobile, desktop, and web; its free account has limited loops and instruments.

Highnote is an alternative with a free Starter plan offering 15 total tracks, 50GB of cloud storage, and unlimited shared spaces. It may suit users organizing shared audio projects rather than writing notation.

Pibox has a free plan for up to two users and two projects, with unlimited guests and 1 GB of storage. Consider it when those project and file-sharing limits match your needs.

Jamulus is free and open-source software with apps across several desktop and mobile platforms; choose it if that is the kind of tool you need.

SonoBus is free software offered as standalone apps and audio plugins, an alternative for users looking for that format.

Sound Credit offers a free Essential plan with 1 GB of storage, project invites, and recordings for personal projects; its track limit is presented inconsistently as up to 20 tracks and up to 3 tracks.

CollaBro is another freemium option for users comparing collaboration software.

BeatSense is a freemium alternative available on the web and Android.

Verdict

Choose Flat if you need notation software that also supports playback and real-time collaboration, especially for shared arranging or educational work. Its free tier is useful for a modest score library, while Power unlocks unlimited scores, more instruments, and cloud sync. Look elsewhere if PDF import is central to your workflow or you need cloud sync without moving beyond the free plan.
