Overview

The platform installs as a complete 64-bit Debian GNU/Linux system with a Proxmox kernel, rather than as an application on an existing server OS. Its installer uses the selected server and erases data on the disks chosen for installation, so it is a poor fit for a machine whose existing contents must remain in place.

Administrators can manage virtual machines, containers, clusters, and disaster recovery through the web interface, with corresponding functions exposed through a command-line interface and REST API. The integrated cluster stack allows management from any node without a dedicated manager. A high-availability manager monitors guests and can act automatically when one fails; running virtual machines can also move between nodes without noticeable end-user downtime.

Key features

Virtualization and storage

KVM full virtualization and Linux Containers share one platform, covering Linux and Windows application workloads. Storage integrations include NFS, SMB/CIFS, iSCSI, Ceph RBD and CephFS, GlusterFS, LVM, ZFS, and directory storage. That range gives infrastructure teams several ways to connect existing storage, though the platform's value is greatest for organizations prepared to operate their own server environment.

Backups, security, and access

Proxmox Backup Server integration supports incremental, client-side encrypted and deduplicated backups, as well as live restore and single-file recovery. UEFI Secure Boot and virtual TPM support provide guest security options. Authentication can use Linux PAM, Proxmox's authentication server, LDAP, Microsoft Active Directory, or OpenID Connect; role-based permissions, granular ACLs, API tokens, and a distributed IPv4/IPv6 firewall help restrict access.

Automation

The REST API is JSON-schema-defined, and automation options include Ansible, Terraform, and OpenTofu. This makes Proxmox VE a practical choice for teams that want infrastructure management to fit into scripted workflows rather than rely solely on the web interface.

Pricing

The software is free to download and use under GNU AGPLv3. Paid subscriptions are billed annually per occupied physical CPU socket, regardless of core count. Every subscription level includes all Proxmox VE features and stable updates; the difference is support coverage. Each server in a cluster needs coverage, and every node must use the same subscription level, so support costs scale with the cluster rather than just its manager.

Community — 120.00 EUR per year: Stable updates, Enterprise Repository access, and community support. It has no enterprise ticket support and is intended for home labs, training, evaluation clusters, and other non-production use.
Basic — 370.00 EUR per year: Three support tickets per year and a one-business-day response time. It suits smaller production estates needing paid support, but its ticket allowance is limited.
Standard — 550.00 EUR per year: Ten support tickets per year and a four-hour response time, a more balanced option for established IT teams.
Premium — 1100.00 EUR per year: Unlimited tickets, a two-hour response time, and 24/7 support, with remote SSH support and offline updates and key activation. It is aimed at business-critical infrastructure.

Each subscription term is one year from purchase. Community is the sensible paid tier for non-production use; production operators should weigh the ticket limits and response times against the cost of covering every cluster node.

Platforms

Proxmox VE is self-hosted and supports Intel 64/AMD64 hosts and 64-bit Armv9-A-or-newer hosts, with official ARM64 ISO downloads. Management is available through web, GUI, CLI, and API interfaces. The platform's server focus makes it a different proposition from desktop virtualization tools.

Who it's for

Choose Proxmox VE if you manage Linux or Windows workloads on servers and need virtual machines, containers, clustering, guest failover, storage integrations, and API-driven automation in one self-hosted environment. Its community tier also fits labs, training, and evaluation. Look elsewhere if you need a desktop-first virtualization product or cannot dedicate and prepare server hardware for a bare-metal installation.

Pros and cons

Pro: KVM and Linux Containers share one management environment, so teams can administer both workload types without separate platforms.
Pro: Cluster management, automatic high-availability action, and live migration support continuity without requiring a dedicated manager node.
Pro: Backup integration offers encryption, deduplication, live restore, and single-file recovery, useful for both routine protection and targeted recovery.
Pro: Multiple identity sources, granular permissions, and mainstream automation integrations suit controlled, repeatable operations.
Con: The bare-metal installer erases data on selected disks, making installation risky without deliberate preparation.
Con: Paid support requires equal subscription coverage on every cluster node, which can make larger clusters more expensive to support.
Con: Basic and Standard ticket allowances are finite, while the Community tier is explicitly for non-production use and lacks enterprise ticket support.

Alternatives

For broader browsing, start with Virtual machine software, Virtualization Management Software, or Hypervisor Software.

VMware Workstation Pro is a better fit for free virtualization on Windows or Linux PCs rather than a clustered server platform.
QEMU is a free open-source option for Linux, macOS, or Windows when a broader host-platform choice matters.
KVM is a free open-source choice for Linux users who want the hypervisor component rather than Proxmox VE's integrated management platform.
UTM suits users seeking virtualization on iOS or macOS, with a free GitHub version and a one-time-purchase Mac App Store edition.
Oracle VirtualBox is a freemium alternative for supported desktop and server hosts across Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted environments.
virt-manager is a free Linux and self-hosted alternative.
Xen Project Hypervisor is a free open-source hypervisor source option for Linux and self-hosted use.
Parallels Desktop is another option for users comparing paid virtualization editions.

Verdict

Proxmox VE is a strong choice for technically capable teams that want self-hosted KVM and container management, clustering, and automation together. Its integrated operations and free software tier are the main reasons to choose it; the bare-metal installation requirement and cluster-wide subscription rules are the reasons to look elsewhere when server control or support costs do not fit.
