Overview

GitHub Copilot is a coding assistant for developers who want help inside their existing tools, from individual contributors to teams managing work on GitHub. Its combination of inline suggestions, chat, and agent workflows makes it a flexible coding companion; the trade-off is that many features beyond completions draw from monthly AI-credit allowances.

Copilot generates probabilistic suggestions rather than copying and pasting from codebases. Its models are trained on natural language and source code from publicly available sources, including public GitHub repositories. For a broader view of this category, see AI Coding Assistants.

Key features

Editor help and codebase context

Copilot combines code completion, chat assistance, and a coding agent. Codebase indexing can inform assistance with project context, while terminal access extends its reach beyond the editor. It supports Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Vim, Neovim, JetBrains IDEs, Azure Data Studio, Eclipse, and Xcode, giving developers options across several established environments.

Agents and connected tools

Copilot can launch work from GitHub, track multiple agents, review changes, and merge completed work from its desktop workspace. Its integrations span GitHub, IDEs, the CLI, project tools, chat apps, and custom MCP servers. Copilot Extensions let users interact with external services in Copilot Chat across GitHub.com, GitHub Mobile, and supported IDEs. Pro also supports Claude Code and Codex; higher plans can delegate cloud-agent work to Claude and OpenAI Codex.

Cloud agent checks generated code for security issues and gets a second opinion through Copilot code review before finalizing a pull request. Cloud and local sandboxes isolate execution. These safeguards are useful for delegated work, though organizations may want to use the available controls: Business and Enterprise administrators can exclude files from suggestions, responses, and code reviews, and organizations can restrict MCP servers with allow lists.

Usage and administration

Paid plans include unlimited code completions and next edit suggestions, but chat, agents, code review, CLI, and Copilot Apps consume GitHub AI Credits. That split makes Copilot predictable for completion-heavy use, but frequent agent and chat users need to weigh their credit allowances. Business adds access, budget, and policy controls; Enterprise administrators can also control preview features, models, and organization policies.

Pricing

Copilot is freemium. Free requires no credit card and gives individual developers without organizational or enterprise access 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests per month, limited agent usage, CLI access, and community support. It includes Haiku 4.5, GPT-5 mini, and more. The strict monthly caps make it a sensible way to explore Copilot, but a constrained choice for regular chat or agent use. Verified students can use Copilot Student at no charge, with an AI-credit allowance, automatic model selection, and no third-party agents.

Copilot Pro costs 10.00 USD per month, billed per user. It is aimed at individual developers, freelancers, students, educators, and open-source maintainers; it includes a selection of models and a total monthly allowance of 1,500 AI Credits, including a 1,000-credit base. It suits everyday coding better than Free, but does not remove credit limits on chat and agent work.

Copilot Pro+ costs 39.00 USD per month, billed per user, with premium models and a 7,000-credit monthly allowance, including a 3,900-credit base. It is the stronger individual fit for more complex development. Copilot Max costs 100.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with $200 in monthly total credits for sustained, high-volume agent workflows; its price makes most sense when that heavier usage is central to the work.

Copilot Business costs 19.00 USD per granted seat per month and provides 1,900 AI Credits per user per month, centralized management, policy control, premium models, and web-based support. It suits organizations that need administration and governance rather than an individual subscription. Copilot Enterprise costs 39.00 USD per granted seat per month, includes 3,900 AI Credits per user per month and priority access to premium models, and requires GitHub Enterprise Cloud; contact sales for organization-wide rollout and larger pooled credits. Free can also serve as a fallback for users switching from Pro through a paid subscription, trial, or verified account.

Platforms

Copilot is available through GitHub Mobile on Android and iOS, GitHub.com, and a broad range of desktop development tools, including Windows, macOS, and Linux environments. Copilot CLI is included with all plans and can be installed through npm, WinGet, Homebrew, or an install script. Terminal use is also supported through Windows Terminal Canary chat.

Who it's for

Copilot is a strong fit for developers who want completion and conversational help alongside optional agent workflows, particularly those already working across GitHub and supported editors. Free works for light exploration, while Pro and Pro+ suit individuals whose usage warrants paid AI credits. Business and Enterprise are better choices when seat management, policy controls, or organizational governance matter. Developers who primarily need frequent chat or delegated work should compare credit allowances with their expected use before choosing a plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: Completion, chat, codebase indexing, terminal access, and agents bring several forms of coding assistance into one product.
Pro: Broad editor and mobile support, plus a CLI included on every plan, lets developers use Copilot across more than one workflow.
Pro: Business and Enterprise offer meaningful controls, including access and policy management and file exclusions.
Con: Free limits users to 2,000 monthly completions and 50 chat requests, with agent use also limited.
Con: Unlimited completions on paid plans do not mean unlimited use across the product; chat, agents, code review, CLI, and Copilot Apps consume credits.
Con: Enterprise requires GitHub Enterprise Cloud, an important qualification for organizations evaluating its higher-tier controls.

Alternatives

Consider Claude Code if you want to compare a separate coding assistant with a free plan and a Pro plan at 17.00 USD per month billed with an annual subscription discount; Claude Code is not included in its Free plan. Kilo Code is another freemium option, with open-source VS Code, JetBrains, and CLI extensions; usage is billed separately on its Free plan.

Amazon Q may suit readers comparing a free tier with 50 monthly agentic requests and a 1,000-lines-per-month allowance for Java upgrades. Amp offers a freemium alternative with a Megawatt plan at 20.00 USD per month and 45,000 minutes of orb time.

Agentforce Vibes is another freemium coding option. Devin offers a free plan with limited usage and a Pro plan at 20.00 USD per month for one member. Gemini CLI provides free access for exploring its CLI with Google Account authentication. JetBrains Junie is freemium, with a Free to Start tier that includes five AI credits and bills AI usage separately.

Verdict

GitHub Copilot is a clear choice for developers who want completions, chat, and agent workflows across GitHub and a wide selection of editors, with organization-level controls available on higher plans. Its main drawback is the credit system for much of the work beyond completions. Choose it for breadth and integrated development workflows; look elsewhere if predictable, unrestricted agent and chat usage matters more than that range.
