Overview

LaunchBox is a library manager for modern PC games and emulated console games, best suited to players bringing together titles from stores and ROM collections. Its strength is the breadth of its importing and cataloging; the trade-off is that the free Android version is capped at 100 games and several presentation features require Premium.

It combines automated imports with artwork, metadata, and flexible collection filters, making it a strong fit for varied libraries rather than a single-store collection. Players who only need an emulator frontend, or who want a free Android collection without a stated cap, may prefer another option.

Key features

LaunchBox can import Steam and GOG games, ROM files, and MS-DOS games automatically. It then draws box art and metadata from its Games Database, alongside fan art, screenshots, and logos. This broadens a catalog beyond storefront libraries, though the benefit is greatest for players who actually combine modern PC games with older or emulated titles.

Filters cover genre, platform, ESRB rating, developer, and publisher. Custom status and source fields plus editable metadata let users shape the catalog around their own tracking needs. These controls are useful for large or eclectic collections; they add less for someone who only wants a launcher for a small set of games.

Premium adds community-created or custom themes, Big Box mode, gamepad automation, startup and pause screens, and display customization. These are meaningful additions for a controller-oriented setup or a more personalized browsing experience, while the free Windows core already imports and plays games. Controller support and cloud sync are also supported.

Windows data can be exported to Android, which uses the same games database, media, and portable XML data. Windows installations can be moved by copying the app folder to another location or computer. Support resources include forums, how-to videos, bug reporting, and feature requests.

Pricing

The free Starter (Windows) plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides the core experience, including importing and playing all games, with no stated expiry. It is the sensible starting point for Windows users who want the library tools without Premium presentation features.

Regular (Windows) costs 30.00 USD per once, billed “Own it forever.” It includes all Premium features and a year of free updates; the license lasts forever, but the included update period is one year. This suits users who want the added modes and customization without paying for lifetime updates.

Bundle (Windows and Android) costs 35.00 USD per once, billed “Own both licenses forever.” It includes all Premium features for both apps and a year of free updates to both. For $5 more than the Windows-only Regular license, it covers both platforms, making it the fit for users building a cross-device collection.

Lifetime (Windows) costs 75.00 USD per once, billed “Own it forever,” with all Premium features and lifetime updates. It is for Windows users who value continued updates enough to pay more than twice the Regular price. Premium is DRM-free and may be deployed to as many personal devices as the user wishes.

LaunchBox for Android is free for collections of 100 games or fewer. That cap makes it less suitable as a no-cost home for a larger mobile collection; the Bundle is the paid route for Android Premium.

Platforms

LaunchBox is available on Windows 10 and higher, with Windows 10 and 11 fully supported, and on Android. Android is distributed through direct downloads and updates. Shared database, media, and XML data connect Android collections with Windows exports, while Windows folder-based portability is useful for users who want to move an installation between computers.

Who it's for

LaunchBox suits PC players who want one organized place for storefront games and emulated collections, especially those who value artwork-rich browsing, custom catalog fields, and controller-focused Premium features. It is less compelling for someone with only a small, single-store library, or an Android user whose collection exceeds 100 games but who does not want a paid license.

Pros and cons

Broad imports: Automated support for Steam, GOG, ROM files, and MS-DOS games makes it useful for mixed libraries.
Rich catalog presentation: Artwork, metadata, and filters across standard and custom fields help make large collections navigable.
Flexible Premium licensing: Perpetual licenses and a Windows-and-Android bundle offer clear choices, and Premium is DRM-free for personal devices.
Android free tier has a firm ceiling: Collections above 100 games require a paid option.
Update terms vary by license: Regular and Bundle include one year of updates, while lifetime updates require the $75.00 USD per once Lifetime license.

Alternatives

RetroArch is a free, open-source choice for players seeking a multi-platform project rather than LaunchBox's paid collection-management tiers.

ES-DE Frontend is worth considering for users who want a free, open-source desktop frontend across Windows, macOS, and Linux, or an Android option.

Pegasus Frontend is a free, open-source alternative for users who prefer a no-cost frontend across Android and desktop platforms.

RomM is a free, AGPL-3.0 option for users looking for a self-hosted and web-accessible ROM collection tool across a broad range of platforms.

Yamata Launcher is a free, MIT-licensed alternative for users who prioritize an open-source option across Android and desktop platforms.

Daijishō is an Android-only free alternative for users who want a mobile frontend without paid tiers or stated usage limits.

Forsaken is another free option to consider.

Console Launcher is an Android freemium alternative for users focused on that platform.

Verdict

Choose LaunchBox if you want to unify PC storefront games and emulated titles in a richly organized, artwork-led library, with optional controller-oriented Premium features and a perpetual license. Look elsewhere if Android is your main platform and your collection exceeds 100 games without a paid tier, or if a free alternative better matches your frontend needs.
