Overview

Hoopla gives public libraries a way to offer digital media to their patrons. Borrowing is described as immediate, without artificial availability constraints, but that does not make every title universal: what you can borrow depends on your library’s catalog. Lending periods also vary by format and provider agreement.

Unlike a standalone subscription service, Hoopla is built around library access. A patron needs a valid card from a participating public library and an email address. For audiobook-focused choices, see Audiobook Apps.

Key features

One service, several formats

The catalog spans audiobooks, ebooks, comics, movies, television, magazines, and music. You can stream titles, and most can be downloaded to a phone or tablet; offline listening is supported. Downloads are not DRM-free, so this is library access rather than a way to keep unrestricted copies.

BingePass and Kids Mode

A BingePass gives seven days of access to a collection or platform for one borrow. It can be a useful way to explore a grouped offering, though the access is time-limited. Kids Mode removes titles intended for adults from search and browsing, including history, favorites, and My hoopla, making it a more considered option for child-focused browsing.

More than phones and tablets

Hoopla supports Android, iOS, and web access. Supported TV options include Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Samsung TV, and Chromecast; audio also works through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This gives patrons options beyond a mobile screen, while the library-based catalog remains the deciding constraint.

Pricing

Patron access: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan requires a valid card from a participating public library and an email address, and available titles may vary by library catalog. Hoopla’s instant titles use a pay-per-use library purchase model; patrons borrow through the library rather than buying titles directly. The lending period varies by format and provider agreement.

This is a strong fit for eligible patrons who want a broad media selection without paying a direct subscription fee. It is not a dependable replacement for a paid catalog if your library does not participate or does not carry the titles you want.

Platforms

Hoopla is available on Android, iOS, and the web, with supported TV devices and car audio options noted above. Most titles can be downloaded to a phone or tablet for offline use. Family sharing and DRM-free downloads are not offered.

Who it's for

Hoopla is best for public-library patrons who want to borrow across several media types and value streaming or offline mobile access. Kids Mode may suit households that want adult-intended titles filtered from a child’s browsing. It is a poor fit for anyone without a participating library card, or for readers who need guaranteed access to a particular catalog regardless of their library.

Pros and cons

Pro: Books, audiobooks, comics, video, magazines, and music sit within one library service, so patrons can borrow beyond reading and listening.
Pro: Most titles support mobile downloads, and offline listening is available for use away from a connection.
Pro: Kids Mode filters adult-intended titles across search, browsing, history, favorites, and My hoopla.
Con: A valid card from a participating library is essential, and catalog availability varies by library.
Con: Downloads are not DRM-free, and lending periods vary by format and provider agreement.

Alternatives

Libby is another free library-borrowing app for Android, iOS, and web; choose it if its library collection better fits your reading needs. Like Hoopla, borrowing requires a library card and collection availability depends on the library.

Sora is a free OverDrive product with a student reading app plan; it may suit readers looking for that student-oriented option. Bookmate offers a seven-day free Premium trial covering books, comics, audiobooks, and podcasts, plus uploads and offline reading and listening; consider it if those features and a trial matter more than library borrowing.

Audiobookshelf is a free self-hosted audiobook and podcast server, a different route for people seeking a self-hosted setup. Playary has a free plan spanning songs, podcasts, movies, audiobooks, and TV shows, and may suit someone seeking a free service across those formats.

Libro.fm uses a paid monthly credit plan and may suit audiobook buyers who want one credit per month and member discounts. Ubook offers paid Premium and Premium+ monthly plans, including offline mode in Premium, for readers considering a subscription alternative. AudiobooksNow has a 30-day free trial followed by a $4.99 USD per month club plan with audiobook discounts; it may fit buyers who want that discount model.

Verdict

Choose Hoopla if you have a participating library card and want free digital borrowing across books, audio, comics, video, magazines, and music. Its broad formats, mobile offline access, and supported TV and car options make it a versatile library benefit. Look elsewhere if you need a guaranteed catalog independent of your library, unrestricted downloads, or access without library eligibility.
