Overview

NetSpot brings wireless inspection, site surveys, and network design into a single Wi-Fi toolkit. It is especially suited to people diagnosing or planning coverage across a site, rather than those who only want a basic phone-based scan. Its strongest case is the range from nearby-network analysis to predictive, multi-floor planning; its trade-offs are PRO project caps and a trial that requires a corporate email and a reason for requesting access.

Key features

Inspect and troubleshoot

Inspector mode surfaces nearby Wi-Fi networks with channel, vendor, security, band, signal, and noise information. Spectrum analysis, channel recommendations, and historical analysis add useful context for diagnosing wireless conditions, though this breadth is more than a casual user may need.

Survey coverage

Survey mode produces interactive, color-coded heatmaps, with more than 20 visualizations and customizable reports. Survey data exports to PDF or CSV, while heatmaps can be saved as PNG. That makes the output useful for documenting coverage, not just viewing it in the app. PRO caps a project at 50 zones, 50 snapshots per zone, and 500 data points per snapshot; those ceilings should be considered before committing to larger or more detailed surveys.

Plan and test

Planning mode supports predictive surveys and network design, including multi-floor projects. Active survey throughput testing can use Iperf 3 or custom speed-test servers. Together, these capabilities suit planning and assessment work; readers seeking only a lightweight network scanner may find the planning and survey depth unnecessary.

Privacy and support

NetSpot says survey, scan, heatmap, network, and location data are processed locally and not automatically sent to Etwok. Desktop editions can be activated offline and run fully offline after activation. Optional anonymized, aggregated usage statistics can be disabled in Preferences. Etwok says it protects the limited personal data it holds with access controls and encryption in transit. Email support is available at onair@netspotapp.com.

Pricing

NetSpot is freemium, with a listed starting price of $199, but the named paid-plan prices are custom pricing. NetSpot Free costs 0.00 USD per free and is for personal and evaluation use; it is available for macOS and Windows. It is a sensible starting point for individual exploration, but it is not the choice for users who need a published paid-plan quote or team entitlements.

The 7-day full-featured PRO trial is conditional: requesting it requires a valid corporate email and an explanation. That makes it less convenient for casual evaluation than an unrestricted trial.

PRO Annual Subscription is an annual subscription for 1 user and 1 technician, with 50 zones per project, 50 snapshots per zone, and 500 data points per snapshot. It renews automatically every 12 months unless canceled. PRO Lifetime License is a pay-once option with all updates included and the same one-user, one-technician allowance and project caps. Both fit individuals or solopreneurs, as NetSpot positions PRO; the annual plan carries recurring renewal, while lifetime avoids it but has no published price.

Enterprise Annual Subscription provides 10 users and 10 technicians with unlimited zones, snapshots, and data points. It renews automatically every 12 months unless canceled. Enterprise Lifetime License has the same team size and unlimited survey capacity, is paid once, and includes all updates. These are aimed at teams and organizations; neither has a published price, so buyers must seek custom pricing. Compared with PRO, Enterprise's meaningful gains are larger team access and no stated survey caps, not a published lower-cost tier.

Platforms

NetSpot supports Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. The free edition is for macOS and Windows, while desktop editions support offline activation and offline operation after activation.

Who it's for

NetSpot is a strong fit for individuals and solopreneurs who need to inspect wireless conditions, map coverage, or plan a network, and for organizations whose surveys exceed PRO's caps or need multiple users and technicians. It is less compelling for someone who only needs a free, simple scanner, or for teams unwilling to request trial access or obtain a custom plan quote.

Pros and cons

Pros: Inspection, heatmaps, predictive planning, and throughput testing span the main stages of Wi-Fi assessment.
Pros: PDF and CSV survey exports and PNG heatmaps support sharing and documentation.
Pros: Local processing and offline desktop operation after activation suit users who want to keep survey work on-device.
Cons: The PRO trial requires a corporate email and an explanation, adding friction to evaluation.
Cons: PRO limits zones, snapshots, and data points, which can constrain larger or repeated projects.
Cons: Paid plan prices are custom pricing, making it harder to compare the annual and lifetime options upfront.

Alternatives

For a free download with Wi-Fi scanning and visualization on macOS or Windows, consider inSSIDer; its free edition requires a free Oscium account, and MetaGeek Plus costs 200.00 USD per year. If a free, ad-free mobile app is the priority, WiFiman is an option; its desktop version is limited to UniFi Device Discovery and Teleport VPN. Parkdale is free to download and use on Android, macOS, and Windows.

For a paid site-survey option on iOS, macOS, or web, Hamina Onsite costs 590.00 USD per year; its pricing page offers six- and twelve-month options but does not tie the starting price to one term. Readers looking for Android-only options can compare WiFiAnalyzer and iBwave Wi-Fi Mobile. Kismet is another free and open-source option. AirMagnet Survey PRO is a freemium alternative for macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose NetSpot if you need one toolkit for wireless inspection, survey heatmaps, and predictive network planning, especially across multiple floors. Its range and local/offline desktop operation are persuasive for focused Wi-Fi work. Look elsewhere if you need a simple free scan, an unrestricted trial, or clear upfront pricing for a paid plan.
