Overview

Essay connects planning, research, drafting, revision, citation, and sharing instead of focusing on drafting alone. Writers can link organized notes to essays or outlines, then use rewriting and reordering tools as a piece takes shape. Sharing with friends, teachers, or peers and guided feedback categories make review part of the workflow, though that feature matters most if others are available to respond.

The intended range includes creative writing, proposals, dissertations, and research papers. PDF, Word, Docs, and Markdown exports cover common ways to move finished work elsewhere. Citation and reference management, bibliography formatting, and academic exports make the platform more relevant to academic writing than to a basic text editor.

Key features

Outlines and drafting: Outlines help structure a piece before writing, while the distraction-free drafting environment keeps attention on composition. This is useful for work that needs shape before it needs polish.
Connected research notes: Notes can be organized and attached to an essay or outline, giving research a place in the writing process rather than leaving it separate.
Revision and feedback: Rewriting and reordering tools support changes to a draft; sharing and feedback categories give reviewers a framework. The benefit depends on having people to review the work.
Academic references: Citation and reference management, bibliography formatting, and academic exports serve research writing. Pro adds Zotero integration, including reference syncing, which is the clearest reason for academics with an existing Zotero library to upgrade.
Privacy and contact: Essay’s privacy policy says personal information is used with consent to provide its services, under PIPEDA and the Canadian Standards Association Model Code. It describes safeguards suited to the information’s nature and format, plus audits and investigations to monitor privacy compliance. Support is available at team@essay.app.
Offline and mobile: Working offline is a live roadmap feature. The roadmap lists native Android and iOS apps as planned; the current platforms are iOS and web.

Pricing

Essay is freemium. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 3 essays, a 5,000-word count, 12 notes, and 10 personalized topic recommendations. Those caps are enough to explore the workflow, but they constrain anyone developing several substantial pieces.

Core costs 8.00 USD per month, billed $96 billed annually. It offers unlimited essays, word count, and notes, plus writing and feedback tools, document import, and exports. Core fits everyday writers who need room to work and share without academic reference features; the annual billing is the stated term, so it is not the same commitment as paying month to month.

Pro costs 12.00 USD per month, billed $145 billed annually. It includes unlimited essays, word count, and notes, plus citations and footnotes, reference management, Zotero integration, and academic export. It is the better fit for academics and researchers who need those tools; writers who do not need citation management can save by choosing Core. Both paid plans keep the unlimited writing and notes allowance, while Core gives up Pro’s academic tools.

Platforms

Essay is available on iOS and the web. A native Android app is planned, so Android users should not choose it expecting a native app today. Offline work is listed as live, which can help when a connection is unavailable.

Who it's for

Essay is best for writers whose projects benefit from planning, connected research, revision, and feedback in one workflow. Students and researchers get the strongest reason to consider Pro through citations, reference management, academic export, and Zotero syncing. Everyday writers can use Core for unlimited writing without paying for those academic features. It is a weaker fit for occasional writers who can stay within the free caps, or Android users who need a native app now.

Pros and cons

Pro: Notes connect to essays and outlines, keeping research close to the work it supports.
Pro: The workflow spans outlining, drafting, revision, sharing, and feedback, which suits pieces developed over multiple stages.
Pro: Pro combines citation tools and academic export with Zotero integration for reference syncing.
Con: The free plan is limited to 3 essays and 5,000 words, which can quickly restrict sustained writing.
Con: Android has no native app yet, despite being on the roadmap.
Con: Zotero integration and academic export require Pro, so Core is not the full academic workflow.

Verdict

Choose Essay if you want planning, research notes, drafting, feedback, and academic references tied into a single writing process; Pro is the clearest fit for researchers who use Zotero. Look elsewhere if the free caps are too restrictive, you need Android natively today, or you do not need a structured workspace enough to justify a paid plan.
