Overview

Photos and metadata are encrypted on your device before upload, and Ente says it cannot view them. New photos can back up in the background, while cloud sync, original-quality storage, RAW support, and video backup make the service more than an encrypted archive. The on-device approach also powers face recognition and searches for faces or key elements using natural-language queries.

Ente says Photos has undergone multiple security audits, including assessments by Cure53 with Symbolic Software and an audit on behalf of CERN. It also says it keeps three encrypted copies across three providers and three locations in the EU. Those protections are meaningful for users concerned about provider access and redundancy, but they do not solve a lost-credentials problem: if you lose both your password and recovery key while logged out of every device, Ente says it cannot restore your account or data.

Key features

Search and memories: On-device AI recognizes faces and key elements in photos, supporting face search and natural-language queries. Ente also curates stories from previous years. This is useful for finding and revisiting a large library without relying solely on manual organization.
Sharing and collaboration: Share encrypted albums or browser links, with password and expiry options for links. Album owners can let others contribute photos, including people without Ente accounts via a browser link. That makes shared collections practical beyond a household of existing users.
Imports and export: Ente documents imports from Google Photos, Apple Photos, Amazon Photos, and local storage. Its desktop app supports incremental export, a useful counterweight to storing a growing library in a cloud service.
Family storage: Paid subscribers can share storage with up to five family members, each retaining a separate private space. This suits shared storage budgets without requiring a single shared photo library.
Support: Ente says human support is available through support@ente.com.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 10 GB, one replica, and 100 Locker items. It is a useful starting point, but the storage cap and single replica make it a less substantial long-term home for a growing collection than the paid tiers.

Starter: 2.49 USD per month, billed $2.49/mo or $29.88/yr, for 50 GB, family plan, human support, three replicas, and 1000 Locker items. It fits a smaller library or family seeking the paid safeguards without much storage.
Popular: 4.99 USD per month, billed $4.99/mo or $59.88/yr, for 200 GB, family plan, human support, three replicas, and 1000 Locker items. This is the middle ground for users who have outgrown 50 GB.
Pro: 9.99 USD per month, billed $9.99/mo or $119.88/yr, for 1000 GB, family plan, human support, three replicas, and 1000 Locker items. It suits a substantial photo and video library.
Pro+: 19.99 USD per month, billed $19.99/mo or $239.88/yr, for 2000 GB, family plan, human support, three replicas, and 1000 Locker items. Choose it when the extra capacity over Pro matters.

All paid plans include the same stated family, support, replica, and Locker-item allowances; the main step-up is storage. The free tier gives up two replicas and has lower capacity and Locker-item limits. Annual billing totals are stated alongside monthly billing, so compare the yearly commitment with the monthly option before choosing.

Platforms

Ente Photos supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. That range makes it a stronger fit for mixed-device households than a service confined to one mobile ecosystem, and desktop access also supports incremental exports.

Who it's for

Choose Ente if keeping photos and metadata unreadable to the provider matters, but you still want automatic backup, search, family storage, and shared albums. It is also a credible fit for people moving an existing library from a major photo service, thanks to documented import paths and desktop export. Look elsewhere if you cannot reliably safeguard both account credentials, need more than 2000 GB on these published tiers, or prefer a service with a different recovery arrangement.

Pros and cons

Pros: Device-side encryption covers photos and metadata; the service pairs it with background backup, search, sharing, imports, and incremental desktop export.
Pros: Paid storage can be shared with up to five family members while keeping separate private spaces.
Pros: Paid tiers state three replicas, and Ente says the copies span three providers and EU locations.
Cons: Losing both password and recovery key while logged out of all devices means Ente cannot recover the account or data.
Cons: Free storage is capped at 10 GB and includes only one replica, so users with larger libraries will need a paid plan.

Alternatives

Amazon Photos is worth comparing if its free 5 GB shared photo-and-video storage or the stated Amazon Prime Photos benefit of unlimited full-resolution storage better suits your needs. Google Photos is the direct alternative to consider if you prefer Google's photo service; its free plan is 0.00 USD per free.

jAlbum may suit users who want to publish a photo collection on their own site: its free plan is limited to 24 objects, with own-site storage. Piwigo is an option for people who want a self-hosted photo service; its free self-hosted plan includes all features, themes, and plugins.

iCloud Backup is a narrower alternative for users on iOS, with a free 5 GB tier and iCloud+ 50GB at 0.99 USD per month. Lomorage is free software for users prepared to supply external storage. Synology Photos is free but requires a Synology NAS. Tonfotos offers a free license with lifetime use and limited number of people on photos.

Verdict

Ente Photos is the right choice for privacy-conscious users who want encrypted, cross-platform photo backup without giving up search, collaboration, and export. Its paid family plans and stated storage redundancy add a practical case beyond privacy alone. Choose another service if losing both recovery credentials is an unacceptable risk or if your library exceeds the largest published 2000 GB tier.
