Overview

EngageNow is a free work app for UK school staff seeking local roles through Engage Education. It is best suited to people who want job matching and booking administration in one place; its key limitation is that it works alongside registration with the agency, and a consultant confirms bookings.

Its focus spans teaching, SEND, school support, administration and back-office roles, from day-to-day work through permanent positions. That makes it a practical fit for staff open to different kinds of school placements, but not a general-purpose job-search tool.

Key features

Job matching and applications

Profiles can be tailored by role, subject, key stage, qualifications and travel distance, and push notifications can be customized. These controls help staff filter opportunities around their experience and commute rather than sorting through an undifferentiated feed. A matching vacancy shows the school, date, role and pay, and users can apply in the app. Applying is not the same as securing work: an Engage Education consultant confirms the booking.

Availability, bookings and timesheets

Users can set availability by day, mark dates when they cannot work, and manage their calendar and upcoming bookings. The dashboard also surfaces upcoming work and pending timesheets, with status tracking for whether submitted work has been approved. This makes the app useful beyond the initial job search, particularly for staff managing several bookings. Pay is processed by Engage Education's in-house payroll team based on approved timesheets, so approval is consequential to payment.

CPD, referrals and support

Registered users can access free role-relevant CPD resources. A referral feature offers Amazon vouchers for qualifying work, though it is an extra rather than a reason to choose the app on its own. Users can contact their consultant or the app support team.

Privacy and security

Engage Education says it uses personal information to match users with jobs and manage bookings, does not sell it to third parties, and makes app activity visible to the agency and schools a user engages with. Its school-platform page describes AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, role-based access controls and Microsoft Azure hosting. Staff should weigh that stated protection against the visibility of activity to the agency and relevant schools.

Pricing

Free — 0.00 USD per free. The app is free to download and use, has no subscription fees or charges for applying to jobs, and includes free CPD resources. There are no paid plans or payment options stated for users, so the trade-off is not a reduced feature tier; it is that access to jobs and bookings operates through Engage Education registration. The app guides unregistered users through registration.

Platforms

EngageNow is available on Android, iOS and the web. Its hosted model, employer accounts, application collection and candidate job alerts support its role as a staffing service as well as a staff-facing app.

Who it's for

Choose EngageNow if you work in UK schools, want local day-to-day or longer-term opportunities, and are willing to register with Engage Education. Its availability controls, booking calendar and timesheet status are particularly relevant to people coordinating variable work. Look elsewhere if you want an independent vacancy search or do not want an agency involved in confirming bookings and processing pay.

Pros and cons

Pros: Job details include school, date, role and pay, so applicants can assess a match before applying.
Pros: Matching preferences and adjustable push alerts let staff narrow jobs by role, qualifications and travel distance.
Pros: Availability, booking and timesheet status are handled alongside job applications, with free CPD for registered users.
Cons: Registration with Engage Education is part of using the service, and a consultant—not the app alone—confirms bookings.
Cons: App activity is visible to Engage Education and schools a user engages with, which may not suit staff seeking a more private or independent search.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison of recruitment tools, browse Job Board Software. Choose eJobSiteSoftware if you need a paid, self-hosted job-board platform with unlimited employers, job seekers and postings; its listed Job Board Software plan is 600.00 USD per month, billed as a one-time payment with no monthly fees.

Kardow is a paid option with a free trial and a Starter plan at 79.00 USD per month, or $708 per year ($59/mo billed yearly), for one board, 2,000 import credits per month and one team seat. Madgex is another alternative, with web and iOS platforms.

Indeed Career Scout is a free alternative available on web, iOS and Android. Jobvertise offers a free plan with three resume views per day and five days to view applications, or a Starter plan at 39.99 USD per month with 50 resume views per day and a 500-per-month cap.

WP Career Board suits people seeking a free, self-hosted or API-connected board: its Free forever plan includes a public board with live search and filters, employer and candidate dashboards, job posting and applications, and company profiles. Careerleaf has paid plans including Basic Daily at 35.00 USD per month for daily website crawling and job-post pickup, requiring the setup option above, and Corporate Basic at 65.00 USD per month.

Job Boardly is a paid alternative with no free trial; its 1,000 credits plan costs 12.00 USD once, with credits valid for 12 months, and its Standard plan costs 50.00 USD per month.

Verdict

EngageNow is a strong fit for UK school staff who want local role alerts, applications, scheduling and timesheet tracking without a subscription fee. Its connected work-management tools are the main reason to choose it; look elsewhere if you want to search independently of Engage Education or prefer bookings that do not depend on consultant confirmation.
