Overview

RemNote brings notes, source annotation, and study practice together across desktop and mobile apps. It can generate summaries, flashcards, and quizzes from notes, PDFs, and other sources, then use spaced repetition to bring cards back for review. This integrated approach is useful for building a study workflow around your own materials; it is less compelling if you only need a place to write notes.

RemNote Inc. was founded in 2020, and the company says more than 1,000,000 students use the product. The free tier includes unlimited notes and flashcards, but limits annotated PDFs, uploads, and AI credits.

Key features

From notes to review

AI can produce flashcards, quizzes, and summaries from notes, PDFs, or other sources. Card formats include question-and-answer, fill-in-the-blank, lists, clusters, and image occlusion. Spaced repetition schedules cards to return over time, while adaptive review and practice quizzes provide further ways to revisit material. The range is useful for learners who want varied practice formats, though AI use is capped by monthly credits and feature-run quotas on paid plans.

Annotating and studying source material

Users can mark up PDFs and slides with highlights, drawings, and shapes, and source citations support reference-based study. The free plan permits three annotated PDFs, five image-occlusion cards, and one handwritten document. Free uploads are capped at 20 files a day and 8MB per file, so the tier accommodates modest use better than large or frequent source collections.

Offline access and sharing

Notes and flashcards stay available offline and sync when connectivity returns, which helps when studying without a reliable connection. Shared flashcards and group licenses for classrooms and educational institutions support collaborative and institutional use.

Pricing

RemNote is freemium. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited notes and flashcards, unlimited synced devices, three annotated PDFs, five image-occlusion cards, one handwritten document, 20 files per day up to 8MB each, and 250 AI credits per month. Free users can try each Pro feature a few times, including PDF annotation. It is a workable starting point for individual learners whose source and AI use stays within those caps.

Pro costs 8.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It raises the file allowance to 600 per day, allows files up to 300MB, includes 1,000 AI credits per month, and provides 50 monthly runs for listed AI features. It suits regular users who need larger uploads and more AI capacity; it still imposes explicit AI-run limits. A 25% education discount applies to Pro.

Pro with AI costs 18.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 600 files per day, a 300MB maximum file size, 20,000 AI credits per month, and nearly unlimited runs for listed AI features. This is the better fit for heavy AI-assisted study, at a substantial monthly premium over Pro.

Life-Long Learner is a one-time purchase with custom pricing and indefinite access to most Pro features. It may suit buyers seeking ongoing access rather than monthly billing, but it does not include every Pro feature. Full refunds are available within 30 days of a subscription or license purchase. Payment options include credit cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Cash App, and Link.

Platforms

RemNote offers desktop apps and mobile apps for iOS and Android. Notes and flashcards remain accessible offline and sync when connectivity returns.

Who it's for

RemNote is a strong fit for students and other learners who want to turn their own notes and reading into varied study cards, annotate source documents, and review offline. Its free plan can serve learners with light upload needs; frequent source work or extensive AI generation makes the paid quotas more relevant. Those who want only straightforward note-taking may find its study features unnecessary.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited notes and flashcards on the free plan make it useful for building a study library without a subscription.
Pros: Annotation, citations, multiple card formats, quizzes, and spaced repetition connect source work with ongoing review.
Pros: Offline access with later syncing supports study away from a connection.
Cons: The free plan limits annotated PDFs to three, uploads to 20 files per day, and file size to 8MB.
Cons: Pro includes 1,000 AI credits and 50 monthly runs for listed AI features, so regular AI use may call for the more expensive Pro with AI tier.
Cons: Life-Long Learner has custom pricing and covers most, not all, Pro features.

Alternatives

For a different study workflow, StudyGlen offers a Mini Pack at 4.99 USD per once with 10 study credits and five regenerations per day; its credits never expire. Jambo has a free tier with 2,000 cards, 15 decks, five AI generations per day, and 100 translations per day, which may suit learners who prioritize those stated caps. Gizmo offers a yearly subscription billed up front for 365 days that auto-renews until canceled, for readers considering a yearly plan.

Brainscape is another freemium flashcard option. Knowt is a freemium option with web and mobile apps. StudySense has a free plan with five decks, five AI generations per month, three tutor sessions per month, and 10 document-chat questions per month. PupilBot is an iOS option with a free first study of up to three pages. Vaia is a freemium option available on web, iOS, and Android.

Verdict

Choose RemNote if you want one app to organize notes, annotate learning sources, generate study aids, and revisit them with spaced repetition. The free plan offers a meaningful base, while Pro is the practical step up for larger uploads and more AI use. Look elsewhere if you need only basic notes or expect heavy AI generation without a higher monthly cost.
