Overview

VICE is a free emulator suite for running programs made for classic Commodore 8-bit computers. It suits users focused on C64 or VIC20 software especially well; its wider machine coverage is useful, but the other listed systems come with a clear maturity caveat.

Its strongest case is the combination of timing-focused emulation, detailed C64 audio and video, and disk support across several Commodore systems. Users seeking a polished emulator for C128, PET, PLUS4, or the other less mature targets should weigh those limits before choosing it.

Key features

Eight Commodore systems: VICE emulates the C64, C64DTV, C128, VIC20, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64, and CBM-II. The manual warns that all but the C64 and VIC20 emulators remain under construction, so breadth should not be mistaken for equally capable support.
Processor and timing emulation: Its 6502/6510 emulation includes documented and undocumented instructions, and the project aims to reproduce chip timing precisely. That focus is relevant to programs that depend on original hardware behavior.
C64 sound and video: VIC-II video and SID sound emulation include synchronization, ring modulation, and filters. Those details make VICE a strong fit for users whose C64 software depends on its characteristic audiovisual behavior.
Disk and input options: Up to four external disk drives can use disk images, filesystem directories, or compatible real devices. Joystick input can come from the keyboard or a host-connected joystick, giving users more than one way to control software.
Tool integration: A stable binary monitor interface is used by third-party tools, including C64 Studio and debugger projects. This makes VICE relevant to users who want to work with debugging tools as well as run programs.
Emulation requirements: VICE supports netplay and shader/upscaling, requires a BIOS, and does not support arcade emulation. Those constraints make it a Commodore-focused choice rather than a general arcade option.

Pricing

VICE costs 0.00 USD per free. Its free software is distributed under GNU GPL version 2 or, at the recipient’s option, any later version; there is no free trial because the software is free. The license does not come with a warranty, including implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

There are no paid plans or plan-based feature tiers to compare. The tradeoff is support: developers work on VICE in their spare time and ask users to consult the manual before contacting them. Bug reports, suggestions, and support requests go to SourceForge trackers, with email also accepted.

Platforms

VICE supports Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. The download page offers Windows 64-bit GTK3 and SDL2 builds, plus macOS builds for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs that require macOS 12.0 or later. Android binaries are linked from a separate download page, while users of other Unix-based systems are directed to the Unix download page.

Who it's for

VICE is best for people who want to run classic Commodore software and value broad machine coverage, detailed C64 emulation, or disk-device flexibility. C64 and VIC20 users have the clearest case; users targeting the C64DTV, C128, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64, or CBM-II should be prepared for emulation that may be less capable.

It is less suited to anyone seeking arcade emulation or a product with warranty-backed support. Its free license removes a purchase decision, but support requests depend on a spare-time development team and the project’s trackers or email.

Pros and cons

Pro: Eight Commodore systems are covered, making VICE useful to users with interests beyond a single machine.
Pro: C64 users get VIC-II video and SID sound emulation with synchronization, ring modulation, and filters.
Pro: Support for up to four external disk drives, disk images, directories, and compatible real devices provides flexible ways to work with software.
Pro: Free software under GPL v2 or later is available across Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Con: Six emulators remain under construction and may be less capable than C64 or VIC20 emulation, limiting confidence for users centered on those machines.
Con: The project provides no warranty and its developers have limited spare-time capacity for support.
Con: A BIOS is required, and arcade emulation is not supported.

Alternatives

Breadbin466 is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows users who want a Commodore emulator; its Commodore ROM images are not covered by the MIT License.

C64 Forever is a Windows freemium alternative for users looking for a Commodore-focused option from Cloanto, a developer and publisher of Commodore and Amiga software since the 1980s.

VirtualC64 suits macOS users, including those interested in a web option, who prefer open-source software published under the GNU General Public License.

Frodo is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, or Windows users who want another Commodore 64 emulator.

Z64K is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows users.

CCS64 may fit Linux or Windows users willing to pay 30.00 USD per once for shareware registration; regular use is tied to registration, and registered users may receive special features.

POKE64 is an alternative for iOS users.

C64.emu is an Android alternative for users considering a paid emulator.

Verdict

Choose VICE if you want free access to classic Commodore software, especially on the C64 or VIC20, and value timing-focused emulation, C64 audiovisual detail, or flexible disk support. Look elsewhere if your main target is one of the six systems still under construction, or if you need arcade emulation or warranty-backed support.
