Overview

Qt Creator is an IDE for developing applications across desktop, embedded, mobile, and browser targets. It is best suited to developers working with Qt, C++, or QML who want project setup, interface design, coding, building, deployment, execution, and debugging in one environment. Its breadth is useful, but commercial Qt work requires careful attention to developer and distribution licensing.

The editor combines semantic highlighting, syntax checks, completion, search, and refactoring, while support for CMake, qmake, Qbs, Autotools, and configurable generic build commands accommodates different project setups. Python support is more limited: language services depend on having a language server available.

Compare it with other Integrated Development Environments, C++ IDEs, IDE Software, and Mobile Development IDEs.

Key features

Build, debug, and test

Qt Creator brings integrated debuggers and code analysis into the development workflow, including tools for memory-leak detection, execution profiling, and CPU analysis. That combination can help developers investigate performance and correctness without treating debugging as a separate toolchain. Testing support covers Boost.Test, Catch2, Google Test, Qt Quick Test, Qt Test, and CTest.

Extensions and AI

The IDE supports AI agents, with GitHub Copilot and an MCP Server extension in its documentation. Qt also offers extensions for Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, and Android Studio, and supports a CLion extension. External vendor extensions are not checked by Qt for security flaws or malicious intent, so users should assess extensions before installing them.

Pricing

Qt Creator has a free open-source version priced at 0.00 USD per free. Use of the Qt framework under that option remains subject to LGPL/GPL obligations, so free access does not remove the need to understand the license conditions that apply to a project.

Commercial Qt licenses have custom pricing. They are subscriptions on one- or three-year terms, typically invoiced as pre-payment, with auto-renewal. Qt Creator is included among the Qt tools, but each developer using Qt commercially needs an active designated developer license; Qt-based device distribution may also require distribution licenses. Qt's commercial evaluation lasts 10 days and is for evaluation, not production or actual product development.

The free option is the fit for open-source work that can meet its license obligations. Commercial teams should budget for the required developer licenses and check whether distribution licensing applies before committing.

Platforms

Qt Creator targets Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, the web, and Windows. Binary packages are available for Linux, macOS, and Windows, making those desktop systems the directly supported installation choices described for the IDE.

Who it's for

Qt Creator is a strong choice for developers building Qt-based applications across desktop, embedded, mobile, or browser targets, particularly when C++ or QML is central and the team values integrated build, debugging, analysis, and test workflows. It is less compelling for Python-first projects that need broad language support from the IDE, or for commercial developers who want a workflow without Qt's per-developer and possible device-distribution licensing requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros: One IDE covers project creation through debugging across several application targets, reducing the need to split core workflow stages across separate tools.
Pros: Multiple build systems and widely used testing frameworks are integrated, with configurable commands for generic projects.
Cons: Python language services depend on an available language server, making Python support less self-contained than its C++ and QML focus.
Cons: Commercial Qt development requires an active license for each developer, and distribution may add another licensing requirement.
Cons: Qt does not security-check extensions from external vendors, leaving extension assessment to users.

Alternatives

Visual Studio is worth considering for Windows-focused developers who want a free Community edition aimed at students, open-source contributors, and individual developers.

IntelliJ IDEA offers a free core edition for Java and Kotlin, making it a more direct fit for those languages than Qt Creator's C++ and QML focus.

PyCharm is the more relevant alternative for Python-focused development; its free plan includes one month of Pro.

Rider offers a free non-commercial option for individual development, including AI Free, and may suit that use case better.

CLion is an alternative for individual non-commercial C/C++ development, learning, and open-source contributions without commercial use.

WebStorm is an alternative for individual non-commercial development, with a one-year license that automatically renews.

Xojo covers desktop, mobile, and web targets across the same broad platform set, and may suit readers seeking that alternative approach.

RustRover is an alternative for Rust learning, hobby development, and qualifying open-source contributions.

Verdict

Choose Qt Creator if you are building Qt applications and want editing, build-system integration, debugging, analysis, and testing under one roof. Its cross-target workflow is the main draw; Python support is conditional, and commercial Qt licensing is the main reason to look elsewhere or examine the terms closely before adopting it.
