Overview

Duolingo is a learning app for people who want short, guided practice across language study and a few other subjects. It suits learners who value frequent prompts and level-adjusted lessons; it is less compelling for anyone seeking a clearly measured account of learning outcomes.

Its range and free entry point make it easy to start, while speech practice, review, and offline lessons broaden the ways to study. The trade-off is that the free plan’s usage limits and the paid offerings’ terms are not fully established here, so compare them carefully before committing.

Key features

Language courses span 40 listed languages and cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Quick lessons make it easier to fit practice into a busy day, and speech practice gives learners a way to work on spoken skills. The format favors frequent, small sessions rather than a long-form course experience.

Placement tests, personalized review, and lessons that adjust to a learner’s level and pace can help keep study relevant as skills change. Game-like features, challenges, and reminders are designed to encourage regular practice. That structure may suit learners who benefit from prompts, but it may not appeal to those who prefer an ungamified or self-directed approach.

Offline lessons are supported, a practical advantage when connectivity is limited. The offering also extends to chess and math, so it is not solely a language-learning app. Duolingo describes its teaching methods as research-backed and says research shows its learning works; its stated goal is real-world communication skills, though it does not quantify outcomes here.

The Duolingo English Test is described as a fast, affordable, AI-enabled way to test English wherever and whenever users perform best. Duolingo also has products for schools and businesses, plus Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max subscriptions.

Pricing

Duolingo uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, making it a no-cost starting point for learners willing to work within the free experience.

A 14-day trial is also offered, while the Free trial plan is shown as price not listed and a 1 week term. That differs from the 14-day trial note, so confirm the trial length and renewal terms before starting. Duolingo for Schools and Duolingo for Business are separate offerings, with custom pricing.

Platforms

Duolingo runs on Android, iOS, macOS, and the web, with mobile apps on Apple App Store and Google Play. Cloud and mobile deployment and offline lessons give learners options across devices and connectivity conditions.

Who it's for

It is a sensible choice for solo learners who want brief, adaptive language practice, reminders, and a free way to begin. The additional chess and math content may also appeal to people looking for more than language study in one service. Schools and businesses can consider the dedicated offerings, while prospective English-test takers may find the Duolingo English Test relevant.

Look elsewhere if you need transparent paid-plan terms before evaluating a service, or if you want outcome evidence beyond the company’s own research claim.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad study range. Forty listed languages plus chess and math give learners more subject choice than a language-only focus.
Pros: Multiple practice supports. Speech practice, placement tests, personalized review, adaptive lessons, and offline lessons offer different ways to keep studying.
Pros: Free entry point. The no-cost plan lets a learner start without a paid commitment.
Cons: Free limits are unclear. Without the caps, learners cannot tell whether the free plan will be enough for sustained or intensive use.
Cons: Outcome claims are not quantified. The stated research backing does not establish a particular result for an individual learner.

Alternatives

Busuu is another freemium option, with a free plan and Android, iOS, and web support; consider it if you want to compare a different provider with premium tiers. LingQ may suit learners comfortable with explicit free-tier caps: its free membership includes 20 saved words and phrases, five imported lessons, and one audio playlist, and it also supports browser extensions.

Talkpal is worth comparing if you want a daily-limited free plan: its Basic Plan allows 10 minutes per day. ELSA Speak may fit someone focused on speaking practice who wants a stated annual price; its ELSA Premium plan is 159.99 USD per year.

JapanesePod101 is an alternative for learners seeking Japanese lessons, with a free plan and trial. Talktiko offers a free plan limited to one language and three lessons per day, or a Plus Annual plan priced at 4.17 USD per month billed annually. Clozemaster has a free limit of 30 sentences per day, which may suit someone comparing a sentence-based practice option. Meslingo offers core learning and community features free, with AI features using credits, or a Pro plan at 3.99 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose Duolingo if you want a free starting point, short adaptive lessons, and varied practice across many languages, with chess and math as additional subjects. Its best case is regular, bite-sized study supported by reminders and review. Look elsewhere if transparent plan terms or quantified learning outcomes are essential to your decision.
