Overview

Duo Mobile is an authentication app for people signing in to protected work and personal accounts. It is best suited to organizations that need mobile approvals across varied systems and control over access conditions. Its combination of push, passcodes, and account restoration makes it more capable than a basic code generator, but the organization-focused setup is more than a personal-only user may need.

Key features

Duo Push lets users approve or deny a login attempt with a tap; time-based passcodes provide a code-entry alternative. The iOS and Android apps also support third-party TOTP accounts, which can keep other authenticator codes in the same app. Biometrics and passcodes add options when a push prompt is not suitable. The range is useful for organizations accommodating different sign-in situations, though the app remains part of a broader authentication setup rather than a standalone answer to every account-security need.

Duo Restore backs up and restores Duo-protected accounts when users change iOS or Android devices, reducing friction during a device upgrade. Security Checkup sends users a security score for their mobile device through notifications. Users who need enrollment, activation, reactivation, or troubleshooting help must contact their organization's Duo administrator, so the support path depends on that organization.

Administrators can connect Duo to legacy infrastructure, major platforms, custom apps, VPNs, SaaS tools, and offline devices. Integrations can use RADIUS, SAML/OIDC, Duo Authentication Proxy, or direct API connections. Adaptive authentication can tailor access policies to user role, location, application, network, and device health, giving organizations meaningful control over access rather than simply adding a second prompt. Duo supports SSO, directory synchronization, device posture, audit logs, and passwordless methods including platform authenticators, passkeys, FIDO2 security keys, and Duo Push.

Duo says it uses asymmetric cryptography, keeps private keys on users' devices in a tamper-proof secure element, and does not store passwords. It supports or aligns with a range of requirements, including PCI-DSS 4.0, NIST 800-63 and 800-171, DEA EPCS, GDPR, FFIEC, HIPAA, and PIPEDA. The breadth will matter to organizations with compliance obligations, but these claims do not replace an organization's own compliance assessment.

Pricing

Duo offers a free plan and a 30-day trial. Duo Free costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly, and is capped at 10 users. That makes it suitable for a small group evaluating basic fit, but the user cap limits its usefulness as an organization grows.

Duo Essentials costs 3.00 USD per month and includes Duo Directory, phishing-resistant MFA, passwordless authentication, SSO, Trusted Endpoints, and unlimited applications. It is the entry paid tier for organizations that need broad app coverage and core access controls. Duo Advantage costs 6.00 USD per month, adding Cisco Identity Intelligence, Duo Passport, session theft protection, Active Directory Defense, and risk-based authentication; it is a better fit where identity and session risks call for those protections. Duo Premier costs 9.00 USD per month and adds Zero Trust access, VPN-less remote access, and complete device trust with endpoint protection check, suiting organizations seeking the broadest listed access and device controls. The published plan terms do not state a paid-seat minimum or billing interval, so confirm those terms before budgeting.

Platforms

Duo Mobile supports Apple iOS and Google Android phones and tablets, as well as many smart watches. The app's mobile platform coverage is clear, but organizations should assess their own device mix and integration requirements before rollout.

Who it's for

Duo Mobile is strongest for organizations that need MFA across varied infrastructure, adaptive policies, and a range of authentication methods. Its integration options and administrative controls suit managed environments; a person seeking only a personal authenticator may find the organization-dependent support and broader platform unnecessary.

Pros and cons

Pros: Push approvals, time-based passcodes, biometrics, and third-party TOTP support offer alternatives for different sign-in contexts.
Pros: Broad integration methods and adaptive policies can fit organizations with mixed systems and varied access requirements.
Pros: Duo Restore supports account recovery when users move to another iOS or Android device.
Cons: End-user enrollment and troubleshooting go through the organization's administrator, making the experience dependent on internal support.
Cons: The free plan's 10-user cap makes it a limited option for larger teams.

Alternatives

Choose Bitdefender Total Security instead if you want a paid security product with a free plan and trial across Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows; its Total Security Individual plan costs 59.99 USD per year for the first year, plus applicable sales tax, and covers 5 devices and 1 account. Proofpoint Email DLP and Encryption is an alternative for readers considering a paid email-focused product, with no free plan and support for Android, iOS, web, and Windows. SentinelOne Singularity Cloud Security may suit readers comparing paid security plans billed per endpoint; its listed plans have different data-retention terms, while prices are custom. Cayosoft Administrator is another option to consider for organizations seeking administrator software, with a free trial and quote-based subscriptions available for 12, 36, or 72 months. Delinea Identity Threat Protection is a paid, quote-priced alternative with a free trial. Netwrix Password Secure is worth considering for password-security needs; its self-service plan costs 60.00 USD per year with a minimum one-year commitment. Blumira is a paid option with a Detect plan at 12.00 USD per month for cloud and local network SIEM visibility, pre-tuned detections, and one-year log retention. Palo Alto Networks Cortex Cloud API Security is another option for readers comparing paid API security software.

Verdict

Duo Mobile is a strong choice for organizations that need mobile MFA across diverse systems, with adaptive access controls and multiple sign-in methods. Its broad integrations and account restoration are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need only a personal authenticator or require end-user support outside your organization's administrator.
