Overview

DuckStation focuses on playability, speed, and long-term maintainability while emulating PS1 games. Its graphics and play options go well beyond simply loading a game, giving players room to tailor presentation and controls. That flexibility is useful if you want to refine how a game looks or manage saves in different ways; it may be more than you need if you want a minimal emulator.

A PS1 or PS2 BIOS image is required, and DuckStation does not include one. The project recommends dumping a BIOS from your own console. Games are also not provided; the free plan requires legally purchased, dumped games. The project describes its license as CC-BY-NC-ND and says modified versions may not be published. Source is available, but DuckStation is not open source.

Key features

Graphics and enhancements

The hardware renderer supports D3D11, D3D12, OpenGL, Vulkan, and Metal. Upscaling, texture filtering, and 24-bit color offer practical ways to improve the original image. PGXP geometry precision, texture replacement, adaptive downsampling, and post-processing shader chains add more control for players who want to adjust rendering; that range is an advantage for customization, not a requirement for enjoying the emulator.

Saves, play, and controllers

Save states, rewind, and runahead offer different ways to manage play, while CPU overclocking gives users another performance option. Multi-disc support, memory card editing, and save importing are useful for players managing a larger game collection or existing saves. Digital and analog controllers, rumble, and multitap support for up to eight devices cover varied setups. DuckStation also simulates GunCon and Justifier lightguns with a mouse, and integrates with RetroAchievements and Discord Rich Presence.

Game formats

Supported formats include bin/cue, MAME CHD, single-track ECM, MDS/MDF, CCD, and unencrypted PBP. That range accommodates several common disc-image formats, but the emulator still depends on users supplying their own games.

Pricing

DuckStation is free. Its Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the Android app; users must provide a BIOS image and legally purchased, dumped games. There are no paid tiers to weigh against the free version, but the required files are a significant prerequisite.

Platforms

DuckStation supports Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Desktop builds include Windows 10/11, a Linux AppImage, and universal macOS builds; macOS 13.3 or newer is required. Windows 1809 or newer is required, and Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 are unsupported.

The maker provides no support for the Android app and asks users not to email for help with it. That makes Android a less reassuring choice if you expect assistance. Google Play lists the developer's disclosures as no data shared with third parties and no data collected.

Who it's for

DuckStation suits PS1 players who already have the required BIOS and game files and want graphics controls, flexible save options, or support for varied controllers. It is less suitable for anyone seeking an emulator that supplies games or BIOS files, users who need maker support on Android, or developers who want to publish modified versions.

Pros and cons

Pros: Extensive graphics options, including multiple renderer APIs, upscaling, and shader chains, give players meaningful control over presentation.
Pros: Save states, rewind, runahead, multi-disc support, and memory card tools cover several distinct play and save needs.
Pros: Support for multiple desktop platforms and controller types, including mouse-simulated lightguns, suits varied setups.
Cons: Users must supply both a BIOS image and their own legally purchased, dumped games.
Cons: The maker does not support the Android app, leaving Android users without that support channel.
Cons: CC-BY-NC-ND terms prohibit publishing modified versions, limiting reuse despite source availability.

Alternatives

PlayStation Emulators is a useful list for comparing options in the same console category. For broader platform coverage, see Game Console Emulators or Emulator Software.

Avocado is another free option across Android and desktop platforms, but its early development status and varying game compatibility make it a better fit for users willing to accept an experimental experience. Choose Gamma if you want an option for iOS or macOS; its free version may display ads. Vita3K is worth considering if open-source licensing matters more, though it is experimental and commercial game compatibility varies.

QuackStation is another free option for Android and desktop. ScePSX also offers a free option across Android and desktop. FPse may suit Android users who prefer a paid app, at 2.99 USD per once. XEBRA and Jam Pad are alternatives for Android.

Verdict

Choose DuckStation if you have your own BIOS and game files and want a free PS1 emulator with extensive graphics, save, and controller options across desktop platforms. Its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the combination of file prerequisites, no Android support from the maker, and restrictive terms on publishing modified versions.
