Overview

Flagsmith lets teams decide where and to whom a feature is available, from a particular environment or user to a segment or percentage of users. That makes gradual releases practical without exposing every user at once. Multivariate flags add percentage splits across variations for A/B and multivariate testing, while remote configuration lets teams change properties such as text, colors, and behavior without deploying new code.

Hosted cloud, private cloud, and self-hosted options give teams a choice in how they run the service. The maker says core feature-flag functionality is open source and most of the product is under the BSD-3 licence. It also states Flagsmith is SOC 2 Type 2 accredited and that its self-hosted instance supports HIPAA, FedRAMP, and ISO 27001. Bullet Train Ltd., the company behind Flagsmith, is based in London, England.

Key features

Targeting and staged releases: Target by environment, individual user, segment, or percentage. This is useful for controlled rollouts, though teams need to decide how to structure those targets.
Experiments: Percentage splits across variations support A/B and multivariate testing, bringing experimentation into the same feature-management workflow.
Remote configuration: Change supported feature properties without a code deployment. This can reduce the need for a release when only configuration needs to change.
Integrations and events: Integrations include Amplitude, Datadog, GitHub, GitLab, Grafana, Jira, Mixpanel, OpenFeature, Segment, Sentry, Slack, and Terraform. Environment-level webhooks can send events to a team's own infrastructure.
SDK coverage: SDK languages include JavaScript, React, Next.js, Android/Kotlin, iOS/Swift, Flutter, Python, Java, .NET, Node.js, Ruby, PHP, Go, Rust, and Elixir, giving teams in those ecosystems a route to integrate.

Pricing

Flagsmith offers a free plan, paid plans from $40/mo (annual), and a 14-day trial. The free tier is useful for an individual or a small evaluation: it includes 50,000 requests per month, one team member, and one project, with unlimited flags, environments, identities, and segments. The one-seat and one-project caps make it a poor fit for a collaborating team. Exceeding the request allowance gives users seven days to upgrade before action is taken.

Start-Up: $40.00 USD per month, billed 12 months paid up front. It raises the allowance to 1,000,000 requests per month and includes three team members, unlimited projects, flags, and environments, plus email technical support. This is the practical step up for a small team that can commit to annual billing; it still caps team membership at three.

Scale-Up: $250.00 USD per month, billed 12 months paid up front. It includes 5,000,000+ requests per month and five team members, with room to add up to 20. SAML/SSO, governance features, and priority email and chat support make it better suited to teams needing access controls and oversight, though its upfront annual commitment and included-seat limit are substantial considerations.

Enterprise: Custom pricing, with 5,000,000+ requests per month, 20+ team members, cloud, private cloud, or self-hosted deployment, tailored hosting, and an enterprise SLA. Contact sales is the route for organizations needing those deployment and service terms.

Platforms

Flagsmith supports Android, iOS, web, API, Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as self-hosted deployment. The range fits teams managing flags across mobile, browser, and server-side products, with self-hosting available for those who want to run their own instance.

Who it's for

Flagsmith is a strong fit for software teams that need controlled rollouts and configuration changes across several application types, especially when experiments or self-hosting matter. It is less attractive to a solo user who expects to add collaborators on the free tier, or to a team unwilling to pay a year upfront for Start-Up or Scale-Up. Teams needing governance features such as SAML/SSO should look at Scale-Up rather than assuming they are included in the cheaper paid plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: Targeting, percentage rollouts, and multivariate experiments cover controlled release and testing needs in one platform.
Pro: Remote configuration can change selected properties without a new code deployment.
Pro: Hosted, private-cloud, and self-hosted deployment options accommodate different infrastructure preferences.
Con: The free plan allows only one team member and one project, limiting its usefulness for collaborative work.
Con: Start-Up and Scale-Up require 12 months paid up front, which raises the commitment beyond the monthly price presentation.
Con: Scale-Up includes five team members and allows up to 20, so larger teams may need Enterprise.

Alternatives

Feature Flag Software is the category to browse when comparing more tools in this area; Release Management Software is a broader list for readers considering release-management products.

ConfigCat is worth considering if its free allowance suits the workload: its Forever Free plan includes 10 feature flags, two environments, two products, five million config JSON downloads per month, and 20 GB monthly network traffic. LaunchDarkly Experimentation is another freemium option; its Developer plan is free forever and includes 100K experimentation MAU per month, one project, three environments, five service connections per month, and A/B tests and experiments. Statsig may suit teams prioritizing a larger free event allowance: its Developer plan includes two million events per month, unlimited flag and config checks, 50,000 session replays per month, one-year analytics retention, and unlimited seats.

Planview AdaptiveWork is a paid alternative with pricing available by contacting an account executive. airfocus is another paid option, with no free plan or free trial. Zoho Sprints and Unleash are freemium alternatives. Blue Canvas is a freemium option with a free trial and a browser-based Profiles & Permissions plan for comparing profiles and permission sets, including field-level security differences.

Verdict

Choose Flagsmith if your team needs targeted releases, experiments, and remote configuration, particularly across multiple platforms or deployment models. Its mix of rollout controls and hosting choices is the main reason to pick it. Look elsewhere if you need a collaborative free tier or cannot accept annual upfront payment for a paid team plan.
