Overview

Dorico combines score writing, arrangement, playback, and publishing. It imports and exports MIDI and MusicXML, and can also export audio and graphics, giving users practical routes to exchange work and prepare material for listening, sharing, or printing. Sharing music with performers and collaborators supports team workflows, though the product’s breadth is most useful to people developing complete scores rather than seeking a narrowly focused tablature editor.

Flexible input and editing let composers change decisions as a piece evolves. Music can be moved between players or expanded and reduced across instruments, and chord symbols can be used to create fully voiced parts. Automatic formatting handles routine presentation; Dorico Pro’s thousands of customization options are more relevant when users need detailed control over engraving and layout.

Key features

Score exchange: MIDI and MusicXML import and export support moving notation between applications. Audio and graphics export add useful output choices for playback and distribution.
Arrangement and parts: Moving material between players and scaling it across instruments suits changing ensemble plans. Generating voiced parts from chord symbols can help when a score needs to be developed into playable parts.
Playback tools: Hundreds of sounds, more than 30 effects processors, and a full audio Mixer provide substantial audio tools alongside notation.
Learning resources: Tutorials and documentation support learning, and Dorico is used in schools, colleges, and universities.

Pricing

Dorico is freemium, with a free trial lasting 60 days as well as free editions. The desktop editions are for macOS and Windows; Dorico for iPad is a separate free full version with optional paid functionality.

Dorico SE 6: Free forever for writing music for up to eight players. It includes MusicXML and MIDI import and export. The cap makes it a sensible starting point for small ensembles, but not a fit for larger scores.
Dorico for iPad: Free full version with music notation and playback. It can produce sheet music to play, share, or print; optional paid functionality is available.
Dorico Elements 6: ₹10,913.00, including 15% VAT. It includes music notation and engraving features, plus MusicXML and MIDI import and export. It offers a paid desktop route beyond SE’s eight-player limit.
Dorico Pro 6: ₹63,194.00, including 15% VAT. Advanced engraving and layout capabilities and a proofreading panel distinguish it from the less expensive paid edition, alongside MusicXML and MIDI import and export. The substantial price makes it best suited to users who need that additional control.

The free desktop edition’s player limit is the main constraint to weigh before committing; the iPad version offers another free route, but optional paid functionality may matter for some workflows.

Platforms

Dorico is available for desktop and iPad. The iPad edition supports notation and playback and can create sheet music for playing, sharing, or printing, while SE’s free desktop edition is for macOS and Windows.

Who it's for

Composers and arrangers working with scores that change across players can make use of Dorico’s flexible editing, part creation, and exchange formats. Educators may value its use in schools and universities and its tutorials and documentation. It is less compelling for someone who only needs a free guitar tablature editor, or for a small-ensemble writer who can stay within SE’s eight-player limit and has no need for paid-edition capabilities.

Pros and cons

Pro: MIDI and MusicXML import and export make score exchange practical, with audio and graphics export for other deliverables.
Pro: Flexible arrangement, voiced parts from chord symbols, and automatic formatting support work from composition through score preparation.
Pro: Free SE and a free full iPad version provide meaningful ways to begin without buying a desktop edition.
Con: SE is limited to eight players, which rules it out for larger ensembles unless the user chooses a paid edition.
Con: Dorico Pro 6 costs ₹63,194.00 including 15% VAT, a major outlay for users who do not need its advanced engraving and layout tools.

Alternatives

Music notation software is a useful category overview for comparing options. Choose Flat if cross-platform availability including Android and web matters more, or if its free Basic plan’s core notation features, real-time collaboration, MIDI device transcription, and 15-score limit fit the work. Fender Notion is worth considering for its free plan with unlimited staves, full editing, and cross-platform notation and tablature. For a free notation option aimed at people new to the subject, consider Sibelius; its First edition is available as a download. TuxGuitar is a free guitar tablature editor for readers focused on that task. ScoreCloud may suit users interested in notating from singing; its free plan caps online songs at 10 and adds a watermark to printouts. DomiSol offers a free option for solfa and jianpu editing and playback. Crescendo Music Notation Software is another freemium notation option. Guitar Pro is a paid choice for multitrack tablature and notation editing, with MIDI and MusicXML import and export and playback tools.

Verdict

Dorico is a strong choice for composers, arrangers, and educators who need score writing, flexible arrangement, parts, and publishing tools in one desktop-and-iPad offering. Its free options make it approachable, but the desktop free edition suits only scores of up to eight players, and Pro’s price is hard to justify unless its advanced engraving and layout control are needed.
