Overview

HammerAI is a character-chat and roleplay platform for people who want creative tools alongside conversation. It suits users who value a choice between cloud AI and desktop local models, though cloud use comes with message and credit limits.

Its range extends from story writing and image generation to group chat and tools for shaping characters and fictional settings. The local-model option is a meaningful distinction for desktop users; mobile users instead get apps that store chats and characters on-device by default.

Key features

Character and creative tools: Users can chat with characters, write stories, generate images, and use group chat. Lorebooks and personas offer ways to build out fictional settings and identities, making HammerAI more than a conversation-only app.
Local models: The desktop app runs local models through Ollama and Llama.cpp. Ollama support covers more than 20 LLMs and accepts a user-supplied Modelfile, a useful degree of choice for desktop users willing to manage local models.
Cloud options: Cloud providers can include services accessed through OpenRouter. Free users get two cloud LLMs, while paid tiers expand that selection.
Offline use: Desktop local models work offline once downloaded. Cloud LLMs, image generation, and text-to-speech need an internet connection, so offline capability does not cover the full creative feature set.
Privacy and age controls: HammerAI says it does not collect information about conversations or use user content to train or fine-tune its models. Third-party AI providers may process or retain messages sent to them. The service is for users at least 18 or the local age of consent, whichever is greater, and filters content including self-harm encouragement, graphic violence, and hate speech.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 600 cloud messages per day, an 8,192-token context, two cloud LLMs, local LLMs, and an LLM API proxy. That is a substantial daily allowance for occasional cloud chat, but the daily cap and smaller context can constrain heavier use. The free tier still includes local LLMs, which makes it a sensible starting point for desktop users who want to avoid a subscription.

Monthly subscriptions add credits for image generation or text-to-speech, unlimited cloud messages, larger context windows, and more cloud LLMs:

Starter: 9.00 USD per month, billed $9 / month, with 1,500 credits per month, up to 150 images or 300 TTS, unlimited cloud messages, a 16,384-token context, and four cloud LLMs. It fits regular users who hit the free message cap but do not need the larger allowances.
Advanced: 18.00 USD per month, billed $18 / month, with 3,500 credits per month, up to 350 images or 700 TTS, unlimited cloud messages, a 32,768-token context, and seven cloud LLMs. This is the middle ground for more frequent creative use or longer conversations.
Ultimate: 35.00 USD per month, billed $35 / month, with 9,000 credits per month, up to 900 images or 1,800 TTS, unlimited cloud messages, a 65,536-token context, and 14 cloud LLMs. It is aimed at users who will make substantial use of the expanded context, provider choice, or monthly creative credits.

One-time credit packs are an alternative to a recurring subscription: 1.99 USD per once buys 200 credits (up to 20 images or 40 TTS); 4.99 USD per once buys 600 (60 images or 120 TTS); 9.99 USD per once buys 1,300 (130 images or 260 TTS); 19.99 USD per once buys 3,000 (300 images or 600 TTS); 49.99 USD per once buys 8,500 (850 images or 1,700 TTS); and 99.99 USD per once buys 20,000 (2,000 images or 4,000 TTS). These suit occasional image or speech generation, but buying credits does not add the subscription benefits of unlimited cloud messages, larger context, or additional cloud LLMs. Purchased credits never expire; unused subscription credits expire at the end of each billing period and do not roll over.

Platforms

HammerAI offers web, iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux access. Desktop downloads include macOS Apple Silicon and Windows packages, plus Linux packages for Debian, Flatpak, and RPM. Mobile apps store chats and characters on-device by default. That makes the mobile versions a natural choice for phone use, while local-model and offline use are specifically desktop advantages.

Who it's for

HammerAI is best suited to adults who want character chat with tools for story-making, and especially to desktop users who want local models as an alternative to cloud providers. It is less suitable for anyone who needs cloud access without a daily cap at no cost, or who expects local models to enable offline image generation, cloud chat, or text-to-speech.

Pros and cons

Pro: Local desktop models work offline after download, and Ollama support spans more than 20 LLMs with Modelfile support.
Pro: The free plan combines 600 daily cloud messages with local LLMs and an API proxy, so users can explore both cloud and local options without a subscription.
Pro: Story writing, image generation, group chat, lorebooks, and personas broaden its use beyond character conversation.
Con: Free cloud chat is capped at 600 messages a day, and the free context window is 8,192 tokens.
Con: Subscription credits expire monthly rather than rolling over, so sporadic users may be better served by packs that never expire.
Con: Cloud providers may process or retain messages, and key creative and cloud functions require internet access.

Verdict

HammerAI is a strong fit for adults who want roleplay and story-making tools with the option to run local models on desktop. Its free local access and broad creative toolkit are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need unrestricted free cloud messaging or if monthly credits that expire would go unused.
