Overview

A project can declare packages, language versions, services, variables, files, scripts, tasks, and secrets in its environment configuration. That gives teams a shared setup they can lock and maintain as code, rather than leaving contributors to assemble dependencies independently. The trade-off is foundational: Nix must be installed, and the environment model may be more than a team needs if it only wants to manage a few runtimes.

Cached shell startup is under 100 ms after the first build, making repeat use potentially brisk; that figure does not describe initial setup. devenv is MIT-licensed and free. Projects must be explicitly trusted before auto-activation, a useful safeguard against an untrusted project changing the shell without permission.

Key features

Languages and services: The project supports 58 languages, with version pinning and language server support, and offers 42 preconfigured services. Examples include PostgreSQL, Redis, MySQL, RabbitMQ, MinIO, Caddy, and Elasticsearch. That range can serve varied stacks, though teams should expect to work in devenv’s configuration model.
Processes and tasks: Processes can be supervised, linked by dependencies, and restarted; tasks can run in parallel and integrate with shells or commits. This is useful for coordinating the services and routines a project needs, not just installing its dependencies.
Secrets and shell tooling: SecretSpec can read declared secrets from Keychain, 1Password, LastPass, dotenv, and environment variables. Configurations can also define scripts, variables, and files for bash, zsh, fish, or nushell, with integrations including direnv and an MCP server for AI assistants.
Containers and CI: devenv can build OCI containers from a development environment and run integration tests with its processes active. GitHub Actions integration supports checks, builds, and tests in that environment, which can help teams keep local and CI workflows aligned.

Pricing

Free (MIT-licensed open source): 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free, requires Nix, and works on Linux, macOS, and WSL. No paid devenv plan is described. devenv Cloud is in private beta with an early-access sign-up, so it is not a generally available alternative to the free local tool.

For individuals and teams comfortable maintaining configuration in code, the free plan includes the core environment-management approach without a subscription. There is no paid tier to compare for additional seats or quotas; the practical cost is adopting Nix and its workflow.

Platforms

Install instructions support Linux, macOS, and WSL after Nix is installed. Although macOS is supported generally, as of devenv 2.4 the project no longer builds, tests, or releases the software for Intel Macs. That makes it a risky choice for Intel Mac users who need continued project support; the platform fit is better for Linux, WSL, and supported macOS systems.

Documentation also covers integrations with IntelliJ, VS Code, Zed, GitHub Actions, direnv, and other tools. These integrations broaden how teams can use devenv, but do not remove the Nix requirement.

Who it's for

devenv is a strong fit for development teams that want reproducible, locked environments spanning local work, services, processes, containers, and CI. Its language and service catalog is especially useful when a project needs more than a runtime manager. It is less suitable for people seeking a quick, standalone version switcher, or for Intel Mac users who want active builds and releases for that hardware.

Pros and cons

Pro: A single configuration can cover packages, language versions, services, tasks, secrets, and shell tooling, reducing the need to maintain separate setup instructions.
Pro: Supervised processes, parallel tasks, OCI containers, and integration testing extend it beyond dependency installation into development and CI workflows.
Pro: The MIT-licensed tool is free, with no paid-plan limits described.
Con: Nix is required, so teams not prepared to adopt it face a substantial workflow prerequisite.
Con: Intel Mac builds, testing, and releases ended as of version 2.4, limiting confidence for users on that hardware.
Con: Cloud remains in private beta, so teams looking for a generally available hosted offering should not rely on it.

Alternatives

Consider ActiveState Platform if you need a freemium option with a free organization plan limited to public projects, or an enterprise offering with custom pricing. PortBay may suit users who prefer a community plan with a defined allowance of up to six projects (three without an account), two sandboxed runs, 10 MB of task attachments, and one Mac.

vfox is another free, Apache 2.0-licensed option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Choose Flox instead if its free Personal plan’s Flox CLI, catalog access, unlimited public environments, and three private environments better match your needs. FlyEnv is a freemium option whose free plan includes three local sites and three custom projects per runtime.

GNU Guix is a free-software alternative for GNU/Linux or a complete GNU system. Laravel Herd is worth considering for a PHP-focused setup on macOS or Windows, with a free Basic plan and a Pro plan at 99.00 USD per year. mise is a free, MIT-licensed CLI for macOS, Linux, and Windows. For more options, browse Development Environment Management Tools or Development Environment Managers.

Verdict

Choose devenv if your team wants a free, code-defined environment that can carry dependencies, services, processes, tests, and CI together, and you are willing to make Nix part of the workflow. Look elsewhere if you need to avoid Nix, want a generally available cloud service, or rely on Intel Mac support.
