Overview

GroupManager organizes permissions into groups, assigns players to them, and supports inheritance alongside promotion and demotion paths. That structure can simplify rank administration on servers with distinct authority levels: operators can define what a group may do rather than configure every player from scratch. The trade-off is that complex hierarchies and exceptions need careful management.

Administrators can manage users and groups through configuration files, console commands, or in-game commands. Permission nodes support wildcards, denials, and exceptions, and assignments can expire after a set duration. These controls suit servers that need flexible access policies, but GroupManager is not a complete moderation or protection system.

Key features

Ranks, variables, and integrations

Groups and users can have prefixes, suffixes, and a build-status variable. Chat plug-ins can read the prefix and suffix values, while other plug-ins may use build status. That makes GroupManager useful as a source of rank information for a wider server setup, but the integrations must be provided by compatible plug-ins.

PlaceholderAPI support exposes group, subgroup, prefix, suffix, and permission-check values. Developers can also declare GroupManager as a provided Maven dependency through JitPack, which is useful when building plug-ins that integrate with it.

Storage and administration

Storage options include YAML, H2, MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MariaDB. The range gives server owners flexibility in how they keep permission data, from a file-based setup to database backends. User data is purged at server start after 90 days without login by default; setting lastplayed to 0 protects an account from that purge.

Installation involves placing GroupManager.jar in the server's plugins folder, starting and stopping the server, then editing config.yml. The v3.2 release is labeled for Minecraft 1.8 to 1.20+, and the project directs users to GitHub issues and its Discord for support. The software is released under the GNU General Public License version 3.

Pricing

GroupManager costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan provides the plug-in under GPL-3.0, and no paid plan is listed. There are no paid tiers to compare; the relevant limits are its server compatibility and the fact that antigrief behavior requires another plug-in.

Platforms

GroupManager is self-hosted and supports Bukkit and Spigot servers. Its Minecraft compatibility is labeled as 1.8 to 1.20+ for v3.2, so it is aimed at operators running those server environments rather than users looking for a hosted permissions service.

Who it's for

Choose GroupManager if you run a Bukkit or Spigot server and need configurable permission ranks, inherited group rules, temporary assignments, or values that other plug-ins can read. It is less suitable if you expect one plug-in to enforce build protection: the build-status variable only gives other plug-ins information to use.

Pros and cons

Pros: Inheritance and promotion or demotion paths support structured rank systems without relying solely on individual player permissions.
Pros: Wildcard, negative, exception, and timed permissions give administrators several ways to shape access.
Pros: YAML and five database backends provide multiple storage choices, while PlaceholderAPI exposes rank and permission values to integrations.
Cons: GroupManager does not provide antigrief functionality, so owners need another plug-in for build protection.
Cons: User data is purged after 90 days without login by default unless the account's lastplayed value is set to 0.
Cons: Compatibility is labeled for Minecraft 1.8 to 1.20+; operators should match their server version to that range.

Alternatives

For another free permissions plug-in, consider LuckPerms, which supports API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms. BungeePerms is also free and covers BungeeCord/Velocity as well as Spigot and PaperSpigot. If your server runs Nukkit, Multipass is the listed permissions plug-in for that platform.

ServerRoles, ThunderPerms, and PermissionManager are other free options to compare. For anticheat rather than permission management, Nimbus AntiCheat has specific Paper, Java, PacketEvents, and Java-edition requirements; ReducedX-Anti Cheat is another free self-hosted anticheat option. Browse Minecraft Permissions Plugins for more permission tools, or Taskbar Customization Software for that separate category.

Verdict

GroupManager is a solid fit for Bukkit and Spigot owners who want free, self-hosted rank and permission controls with multiple storage options. Choose it for its hierarchy and integration support; look elsewhere if you need antigrief protection built in or your server falls outside its labeled Minecraft compatibility range.
