Overview

Tuta combines end-to-end encrypted email with an encrypted calendar, and its cryptography is designed to resist quantum attacks. Its clients are open source and auditable. The company, founded in 2011 and based in Hanover, Germany, stores data in ISO 27001-certified data centers in Germany and says it uses 100% renewable energy.

The key compromise is that Tuta supports no mail protocols. That rules it out for readers who need to connect a conventional third-party mail client using a standard protocol. For those comfortable with Tuta’s own apps or browser access, the encryption and platform coverage are compelling.

Key features

Encrypted mail and calendar

End-to-end encryption covers email, while the calendar is encrypted as well. Free users get one calendar; both paid tiers offer unlimited calendars. Paid plans also support calendar sharing and event invitations, with an option to encrypt invitations to external users using a shared password. That makes the paid tiers better suited to people coordinating schedules, while the free calendar is enough for a basic personal schedule.

Storage, domains and offline use

The free plan’s 1 GB is a narrow allowance for anyone keeping a large archive. Revolutionary raises storage to 20 GB, and Legend to 500 GB. Paid plans support custom domains, and include offline support. Desktop clients can import EML and MBOX files, which can help people moving existing mail into Tuta.

Alias limits also rise with price: Revolutionary includes 15 extra email addresses and three custom domains; Legend includes 30 extra addresses and 10 domains. The higher tier makes sense for users managing more identities or domains, but is difficult to justify if the lower limits already cover your needs.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	0.00 EUR per free	1 GB storage, one calendar, three labels and end-to-end encryption.
Revolutionary	3.00 EUR per month, billed annually	20 GB storage, 15 extra email addresses, three custom domains, unlimited calendars and offline support.
Legend	8.00 EUR per month, billed annually	500 GB storage, 30 extra email addresses, 10 custom domains, unlimited calendars and priority email support.

The free plan is a sensible way to start, but its storage and single calendar constrain heavier use. Revolutionary is the practical upgrade for a personal account needing a custom domain, more aliases or offline access. Legend is aimed at users who need much more storage, more domains or priority support; that support replies within one business day.

Family multi-user support can be activated through support on paid plans. Each family member costs €3 per user per month on Revolutionary or €8 per user per month on Legend; shared mailboxes cost €3 or €8 per month, respectively. The annual billing term applies to the listed plan prices.

Platforms

Tuta has apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, plus browser access. This breadth is useful for people moving between phone and desktop, though the lack of mail protocol support means the platform choice does not extend to conventional mail clients. Offline use is a paid-plan benefit.

Who it's for

Tuta suits privacy-conscious individuals who want encrypted email and calendar features, open-source clients and broad device coverage. It also fits people who need custom domains or family accounts and are prepared to pay for them. It is a poor choice for anyone who needs standard protocol support or expects the free tier to accommodate extensive mail storage.

Pros and cons

Pros: End-to-end encrypted email and an encrypted calendar put privacy at the center of the service.
Pros: Apps span Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, with browser access as another option.
Pros: Paid plans scale from 20 GB to 500 GB and add custom domains, aliases and unlimited calendars.
Cons: No mail protocol support prevents use with conventional third-party mail clients.
Cons: The free plan’s 1 GB and one calendar are limiting for larger archives or multiple schedules.
Cons: Custom domains and offline support require a paid plan.

Verdict

Choose Tuta Mail if encrypted email and calendar features matter more than using a standard mail client, and you want apps across desktop and mobile. Its paid plans make custom domains, more storage and family use practical. Look elsewhere if protocol support is essential or the free plan’s 1 GB is too restrictive.
