Overview

Resolve combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post and photo editing, including a Photo page for stills in version 21. That breadth makes it a strong fit for work that crosses several stages of post-production, while the extensive toolset may be more than someone seeking only a simple editor needs.

Projects can use direct-attached drives, NAS or SAN storage, and Blackmagic Cloud can host projects and media for access from anywhere. Resolve supports major file formats and transfers with Final Cut Pro, Media Composer and Premiere Pro, useful when projects move between established workflows. Its listed operating systems are macOS, Windows and Linux; despite a mobile-app designation, no mobile operating system is identified.

Key features

Editing, effects and AI tools

Alongside editing and color work, Resolve includes node-based compositing, keying, rotoscoping, 3D camera tracking and simulation, with GPU rendering. AI features cover facial recognition, object detection, smart reframing and Speed Warp retiming. Third-party Open FX, audio plugins, titles and motion-graphics templates can extend the toolkit. This range is valuable for users consolidating production tasks, though it also means Resolve is a larger commitment than a narrowly focused grading or editing application.

Audio and collaboration

Fairlight handles up to 2,000 tracks with real-time effects, EQ and dynamics processing; surround mixing and live audio input are supported. Cloud-hosted project and media access can help collaborators work from different locations, while storage support spans individual drives and shared NAS or SAN systems.

Pricing

Free edition

DaVinci Resolve is free to download and supports editing and finishing up to 60 fps at Ultra HD 3840 x 2160. That ceiling makes it a substantial option for projects that fit within those limits. Work requiring higher frame rates or resolution needs Studio.

Studio

DaVinci Resolve Studio costs 295.00 USD per once. It raises support to 120 fps and 32K, and adds temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, more than 45 additional GPU- and CPU-accelerated Resolve FX, Python and LUA scripting, and developer APIs. Studio is the relevant choice for higher-spec finishing or users who need those additional tools; the free edition gives up that expanded capacity and toolset.

Platforms

Resolve is available for macOS, Windows and Linux as a desktop application. Mobile-app availability is indicated, but supported mobile platforms are not identified, so mobile users should not assume compatibility with a particular device.

Who it's for

Resolve is best for creators and post-production teams who want editing, grading, effects, motion graphics, audio and photo work under one roof, especially when shared storage or cloud project access matters. The free version suits work within UHD and 60 fps. Choose Studio when projects exceed those limits or need its added noise reduction, effects or scripting. It is less compelling for someone who only needs a focused tool for one stage of production.

Pros and cons

Pros: A single application covers multiple post-production stages, reducing the need to split work across specialized software.
Pros: The free edition supports up to UHD 3840 x 2160 and 60 fps, a capable ceiling for projects that do not require Studio's higher limits.
Pros: Studio adds 32K, 120 fps, noise reduction and more than 45 additional effects for a one-time purchase.
Pros: Broad storage, format-transfer and cloud collaboration support accommodates varied workflows.
Cons: The free edition's 60 fps and UHD ceilings rule it out for work that must exceed either limit.
Cons: Studio's 295.00 USD per once price is necessary for higher resolution, higher frame rates and its additional tools.
Cons: Its wide scope may be excessive for users looking only for a specialized editor or grading tool.

Verdict

Choose DaVinci Resolve if you want one desktop application for a broad post-production workflow and can work within the free edition's UHD and 60 fps limits. Studio is a clear upgrade for higher-spec output or its added tools, but users seeking only a narrow, focused function may be better served by a specialized alternative.
