Overview

Cygnus connects seven stages, from concept and script through character and location references, storyboarding, video, timeline, review, and export. It accepts Final Draft, PDF, Fountain, plain text, treatments, and outlines, so it can take in both finished screenplays and earlier-stage material. The workflow’s value is keeping those materials connected as a sequence develops, rather than treating script, visual planning, and review as separate tasks.

Cygnus recommends projects of 1–5 minutes, 3–10 scenes, and 8–35 shots, and advises splitting longer work into acts or sequences. That guidance sets a clear boundary: it is best suited to short projects or a defined segment of a larger production.

Key features

From screenplay to video

Script import, shot sequencing, and frame generation support turning written material into directable video sequences. Reference images anchor character appearances across storyboard frames and clips, which is useful when a sequence needs visual continuity. Generated clips run 1–15 seconds at 720p; extensions add 2–10 seconds to an existing source video. Those limits suit short beats and visual development, but constrain projects that need long continuous scenes or higher-resolution output.

Review and handoff

Shareable review links let collaborators comment on, annotate, and approve frames. Exports include Premiere Pro, After Effects, Frame.io, and PDF, with Premiere XML and EDL also mentioned. These options make Cygnus more relevant to teams planning a production handoff than to users who only need standalone images.

Ownership and commercial use

Cygnus says scripts are encrypted at rest and in transit, uploaded and generated content remains user-owned, and content is not used for AI training. Content generated on paid plans is licensed for commercial use in film, television, advertising, and corporate video production. Plans include AI services in their credits, so users do not need to supply their own API keys.

Pricing

Cygnus has a free plan and paid Creator, Pro, and Studio tiers. Annual prices below are the per-year amounts shown alongside their annual billing totals.

Plan	Price and terms	Included
Free	0.00 USD per free	200 credits/mo, 2 projects, all 7 pipeline stages, 720p exports, watermarked output
Creator (annual)	31.00 USD per year; billed $372/year	2,000 credits/mo, 10 projects, all 7 pipeline stages, 720p exports, no watermarks
Creator (monthly)	39.00 USD per month; billed $39/month	2,000 credits/mo, 10 projects, all 7 pipeline stages, 720p exports, no watermarks
Pro (annual)	71.00 USD per year; billed $852/year	6,000 credits/mo, unlimited projects, all 7 pipeline stages, 720p exports, no watermarks, 5 team seats, priority support
Pro (monthly)	89.00 USD per month; billed $89/month	6,000 credits/mo, unlimited projects, all 7 pipeline stages, 720p exports, no watermarks, 5 team seats, priority support
Studio (annual)	223.00 USD per year; billed $2,676/year	20,000 credits/mo, everything in Pro, 720p exports, 25 team seats, priority render queue, dedicated account manager
Studio (monthly)	279.00 USD per month; billed $279/month	20,000 credits/mo, everything in Pro, 720p exports, 25 team seats, priority render queue, dedicated account manager

Free provides the full seven-stage workflow, but its 200 monthly credits, two-project cap, and watermarks make it a constrained starting point rather than a clean client-delivery tier. Creator removes watermarks and raises the allowance to 2,000 monthly credits and 10 projects, fitting an individual or small operation that can work within those limits. Pro is the first tier with team seats and unlimited projects; its five seats and priority support suit a small production group. Studio raises the allowance to 20,000 monthly credits and 25 seats, adding priority rendering and a dedicated account manager for larger teams. Annual billing is substantially lower per month than monthly billing, but commits the buyer to the stated annual total.

Platforms

Cygnus runs in a browser and offers a notarized macOS app for macOS 14 or later. That covers browser-based work and Mac desktop users, but no other desktop platform is identified.

Who it's for

Indie filmmakers can use Cygnus to develop compact screenplay sequences without assembling separate tools for visual planning and review. Agencies and brands may value the short-form workflow and paid-plan commercial-use license. Studios and production teams have a clearer case for Pro or Studio when multiple seats, review, and export handoff matter. Users planning long projects as a single continuous piece, or requiring output above 720p, should look elsewhere or divide the work into sequences.

Pros and cons

Pros: One seven-stage workflow connects script intake, visual development, video, review, and export, reducing the need to manage those steps separately.
Pros: Reference-image character consistency and shareable frame review links address continuity and collaboration needs directly.
Pros: Free includes all seven stages, while paid tiers add unwatermarked output and progressively larger project, credit, and team allowances.
Cons: Generated clips top out at 15 seconds and 720p, limiting its fit for longer scenes and higher-resolution delivery.
Cons: The free plan is capped at two projects and watermarks output; commercial-use licensing applies to paid-plan content.
Cons: Studio is a substantial commitment, and the workflow is oriented toward compact projects or sequences rather than long scripts handled whole.

Alternatives

AI Storyboard Generators is a useful starting point for comparing storyboard-focused tools. Choose Boords instead if a web-based storyboard tool with a free single-user tier and 250 AI images per month matters more than Cygnus’s connected screenplay-to-video workflow. Drawstory is another freemium, web-based alternative for readers comparing storyboard tools. Pick Shai if its free access to the first nine storyboard scenes and 200 image credits fits the project; AI videos are premium-only. StoryboardCanvas AI may suit someone seeking a browser or extension-based option with a free single-seat tier, 2 GB storage, and no AI credits. Alchemys is worth considering for users who want 1,000 starter credits at first sign-in rather than a recurring free monthly allowance. CinemaScape AI offers a free two-project starter with a screenplay editor, story canvas, blocking, and PDF export, making it an option for screenplay development without Cygnus’s full video workflow. GOGUL may fit a reader seeking a one-time 100-credit free balance, though it does not replenish. Krock.io is another freemium option for teams comparing review and production workflows across desktop and web platforms.

Verdict

Choose Cygnus if you are developing short screenplay sequences and want script intake, character continuity, generated video, collaborative review, and production-oriented exports in one workflow. The free plan makes it possible to start across all stages, but watermarks and tight caps make paid plans the practical choice for clean commercial work. Look elsewhere if your project depends on long scenes, output above 720p, or a lower-cost storyboard-only tool.
