Overview

H&R Block Online is a web and mobile tax-preparation service with a free route for simple returns and paid plans for more involved filing. It suits filers who want to move up to expert help as their deductions or income require it.

Its clearest strengths are broad return support and help included in paid tiers; its main drawbacks are Free Online’s narrow eligibility and an additional charge for each state filed.

Key features

Return coverage and imports

The service supports self-employment, investment income, and rental income, but Free Online does not. The free tier handles Form 1040 and only limited schedules, and interest and dividend income cannot exceed $1,500. It excludes itemized deductions, self-employment, rental income, capital gains, business income, and foreign income. H&R Block estimates that approximately 52% of filers qualify for Free Edition, so a return that crosses one of those boundaries will need a paid plan.

Premium can import investment information from participating institutions and connect to third-party crypto tax software for transaction imports. Filers can also import a prior-year return from TurboTax or another tax-preparation service. These options can save re-entry for investors and returning users, though they do not remove the separate state-filing charge.

Expert help and protections

Deluxe, Premium, and Self-Employed include unlimited expert help. Paid DIY products also include 24/7 generative AI chat and live tax-pro help, while Tax Pro Review can be added to any DIY option during filing. That gives filers a path to human review without requiring it in every plan, but the added review is not included automatically across all tiers.

H&R Block says it will reimburse penalties and interest resulting from qualifying errors. A qualifying larger refund or smaller tax liability can trigger a preparation-fee refund and an amended return. The service also says it provides pricing upfront and updates customers if it changes.

Online and mobile access

Online keeps the return in the cloud, while downloadable software stores it on the computer for offline work. The Tax Prep app supports filing on any device and document uploads, making mobile access useful for filers who want to handle documents and returns away from a desktop.

Pricing

H&R Block Online uses a freemium model. Free Online costs 0.00 USD per free, billed per state filed, for simple tax situations and Form 1040. It is a sensible fit only when the return stays inside its income, schedule, and deduction limits; state filing is an additional per-state charge.

Deluxe has custom pricing and is aimed at parents, homeowners, caretakers, and contract workers. It adds support for itemized deductions, homeowners, childcare expenses, and Health Savings Accounts. It is the relevant step up when deductions or those household expenses rule out the free tier.

Premium has custom pricing and targets investors and filers with rental income or stock-market activity. It covers rental income and deductions, stock and bond investments, cryptocurrency sales, and investment reporting. Its import options make it the better fit for investment-heavy returns than Deluxe.

Self-Employed has custom pricing and supports business income, deductions, small-business expenses, Schedule C, and income and expense reporting. It is the appropriate tier for business returns excluded from Free Online. Deluxe, Premium, and Self-Employed all include unlimited expert help, while state filing remains an added per-state charge.

Platforms

H&R Block Online works on the web, iOS, and Android. The Tax Prep app supports document uploads and filing across devices. Choose the online service for cloud-stored access; downloadable software is the option for keeping a return on a computer for offline work.

Who it's for

Simple-return filers who meet the free tier’s restrictions can start without a plan charge, though they should account for state filing. Homeowners, parents, and people claiming itemized deductions should consider Deluxe; investors and landlords should look at Premium; and small-business filers need Self-Employed. People whose return requires foreign-income support should look elsewhere, since Free Online excludes it and the paid plan details do not establish coverage.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple paid tiers address deductions, rental and investment income, and self-employment, so filers can choose according to return complexity.
Pro: Unlimited expert help comes with Deluxe, Premium, and Self-Employed, and Tax Pro Review can be added to any DIY plan.
Pro: Prior-year return imports and Premium’s investment and crypto imports can reduce manual data entry.
Con: Free Online excludes several common complex situations and caps interest and dividend income at $1,500.
Con: State filing costs extra per state, and paid plan prices are custom pricing.
Con: Expert help is included only in the three paid tiers; a filer choosing the free tier does not get that included support.

Verdict

Choose H&R Block Online if your return fits one of its clearly differentiated paths and you value expert help in the paid tiers. Its range of coverage and import options makes it a strong fit as tax situations grow more involved. Look elsewhere if you need a fully free return with deductions or income excluded from Free Online, or if per-state charges and custom-priced paid tiers do not suit your budget.
