Overview

Rather than serving as a single storefront, Commerce Layer supplies commerce functions that teams can connect to headless stores, existing websites, mobile apps, connected devices, and retail operations. That approach gives brands room to shape customer experiences across channels while coordinating the underlying transactions. It is less suitable for teams seeking a turnkey storefront or software they can run on their own infrastructure: the platform is hosted, with no on-premise version.

Key features

Checkout and order operations

The stateless checkout supports multiple markets and currencies, and can connect to payment gateways and tax calculators. Commerce Layer says common payment providers integrate out of the box, while manual and external payment services are also possible. A distributed order-management system unifies inventory across locations and automates order steps from reservation through shipping. That combination is useful for brands managing international sales and fulfillment across stores, rather than treating each channel as a separate operation.

Promotions and in-store selling

Teams can configure market-specific promotion rules in a visual editor or a JSON-based DSL, offering a choice between a visual workflow and code-oriented configuration. The POS system uses the same API as online channels and supports store inventory, endless aisle, and shareable selling links. Reusing a commerce layer across online and store selling can help unify operations, though it calls for a team comfortable assembling its own experiences around an API.

Integration, performance, and security

The homepage describes more than 400 API endpoints and real-time webhooks with over 100 trigger events. It also states average API response times below 90 ms and guaranteed uptime of 99.99%. These are substantial operational claims for a commerce platform, while the API and webhook surface gives teams options for connecting systems and reacting to events. Documentation describes a Zapier app, and the platform supports third-party integrations.

Commerce Layer states that it holds SOC 2 Type 2, PCI DSS Level 1 Provider, and ISO 27001 certifications. OAuth 2.0 and resource-level permissions control API access. The homepage advertises 24/7 support, although the plans divide support differently: community support for Developer and dedicated support for Enterprise.

Pricing

Commerce Layer uses a freemium model, but neither plan gives a published price; both are custom pricing. There is no standard free trial. Enterprise trial options can be discussed with sales, which may help larger teams evaluate the service, but smaller teams should not expect a trial period.

Developer

The Developer plan includes one organization, two users, two markets, 1,000 SKUs, 10 links, 100 free live orders per month, unlimited test orders, and community support. The free live-order allowance makes it possible to build and test with real transactions, while unlimited test orders separate development work from the cap. In practice, 100 live orders a month is restrictive for a business expecting meaningful ongoing sales, and the two-user, two-market limits constrain larger or more distributed teams.

Enterprise

Enterprise includes unlimited organizations, users, markets, SKUs, and links, with custom orders per year and dedicated support. It is the more natural fit for brands operating across multiple markets or teams and needing room beyond Developer’s fixed allowances. The trade-off is custom pricing and a sales-led path to discussing an Enterprise trial; this is not a predictable, self-serve upgrade.

Platforms

Commerce Layer supports Android, iOS, web, and API use, and its hosted deployment means customers do not need to operate an on-premise installation. That range suits brands connecting mobile and web experiences to a shared commerce backend. Teams that require self-hosting or on-premise control should choose a different platform.

Who it's for

Commerce Layer is a strong candidate for international brands building headless ecommerce, adding purchases to an existing site or mobile app, or coordinating omnichannel retail. Its support for subscriptions, shoppable links, and connected devices also suits teams extending commerce beyond a conventional online storefront. The API-led model and hosted-only deployment are central trade-offs: it fits teams prepared to integrate a commerce layer, not those wanting a ready-made storefront or control over hosting.

Pros and cons

Broad shared commerce capabilities: Checkout, distributed order management, promotions, and POS use a common API, which supports coordinating online and in-store operations.
International and integration range: Multiple markets and currencies, payment and tax connections, 400+ API endpoints, and real-time webhooks give teams substantial building blocks for multi-channel commerce.
Clear Developer ceilings: Two users, two markets, 1,000 SKUs, 10 links, and 100 free live orders per month make the entry plan easy to size, but limit its usefulness as sales and operations grow.
Hosted only, with custom plan pricing: Teams avoid operating the platform themselves, but cannot deploy it on-premise, and neither plan offers a published price.
Different support by plan: Developer comes with community support, while Enterprise includes dedicated support; teams needing dedicated help must look to the custom-priced tier.

Verdict

Commerce Layer is best for international brands that want one hosted, API-led commerce layer for digital and in-store selling. Its strongest reason to choose is the breadth of connected checkout, order, promotion, and POS capabilities; the clearest reasons to look elsewhere are the 100-live-order Developer cap, custom-priced Enterprise tier, and lack of on-premise deployment. Choose it when your team can build around APIs and needs shared commerce operations across channels; otherwise, a self-hosted or ready-made option is likely a better fit.
