Overview

InSpec compares a system’s actual state with a desired state expressed in InSpec code. That makes it a practical fit for teams that want security, compliance, and policy checks to live alongside infrastructure work rather than remain one-off audit procedures. It supports a hybrid deployment model and can assess targets locally or reach cloud services and infrastructure, including Linux in Docker containers.

Its focus is on defining and running checks, not just producing a compliance score: teams can organize controls into reusable profiles, extend resource coverage, and choose how to handle results. That flexibility is useful across different environments, though it puts responsibility on users to maintain code and determine which license terms apply to their chosen distribution.

Key features

Reusable profiles and controls

Profiles bundle controls into artifacts that can be versioned and can declare platform requirements and dependencies. This gives teams a repeatable way to maintain checks across systems, rather than rebuilding each audit from scratch. Chef also offers premium CIS- and STIG-based profiles for enterprise compliance scanning; organizations needing those standards should account for their premium status.

Cloud coverage and extensible resources

Resources support checks against AWS, Azure, AliCloud, and GCP infrastructure, and users can create custom resources. That breadth makes InSpec relevant beyond a single cloud provider, while custom resources provide a route for requirements outside its built-in coverage.

Reporting and test workflow

Results can be written as JSON, HTML, or plain text, or sent to Chef Automate. The kitchen-inspec verifier also runs profiles through Test Kitchen, connecting compliance checks with that testing workflow. This is a useful range for teams that need either machine-readable output or a report to review, though the choice of destination does not remove the work of defining and maintaining the checks themselves.

Installation, licensing, and telemetry

Chef documents native installers for Windows and Linux distributions, plus Habitat packages for macOS, Windows, and Linux distributions. Chef InSpec 7 requires EULA acceptance, and a license key may be required depending on the distribution source. Chef Licensing Telemetry gathers activation, usage, environment, and bug data for Free and Trial tiers; it is disabled for Commercial users. Teams evaluating the free options should decide whether that telemetry arrangement fits their requirements.

Pricing

Chef InSpec is freemium, with a free option, a 30-day trial, and Commercial licensing. The Free and Trial tiers cost 0.00 USD per free, but their workload and use restrictions differ.

Plan	Price and term	Terms
Free	0.00 USD per free	Unlimited duration; non-production workloads; personal and non-commercial use
Trial	0.00 USD per free	30 days; non-production workloads; product evaluation
Commercial	Custom pricing	Renewable; production and non-production workloads; entitlements based on purchase order

Free is suited to personal or non-commercial use on non-production workloads, but its restrictions rule it out as a no-cost production option for businesses. Trial provides a time-limited 30-day evaluation, also limited to non-production workloads. Commercial licensing is the relevant choice for production use and includes contract support, but its renewable terms and purchase-order-based entitlements mean buyers should confirm the scope that fits their deployment. The paid price starts at $59/yr.

Community Slack support is listed for Free and Trial users, while Commercial licenses include contract support. That distinction matters for teams that need formal support rather than a community channel.

Platforms

Chef InSpec supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows environments. Its documented installation options cover Windows and Linux natively, with Habitat packages also covering macOS; assessments can target local systems as well as cloud services and infrastructure.

Who it's for

InSpec is a strong fit for teams that want policy checks encoded, versioned, and reused across infrastructure, with coverage spanning several major clouds and an option to extend resources. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a production-ready free tier, since the Free and Trial plans are both restricted to non-production workloads. Buyers should also weigh telemetry on free and trial use and confirm license-key requirements for their distribution.

Pros and cons

Pros: Versionable profiles with platform requirements and dependencies support repeatable controls across environments.
Pros: Resources cover AWS, Azure, AliCloud, and GCP, with custom resources available for additional needs.
Pros: JSON, HTML, and plain-text output, Chef Automate reporting, and Test Kitchen integration offer several ways to fit results into existing workflows.
Cons: Free and Trial use is limited to non-production workloads, and Free also excludes commercial use.
Cons: Free and Trial tiers enable telemetry that gathers usage and environment data, a consideration for organizations with strict data policies.
Cons: Chef InSpec 7 requires EULA acceptance, and license-key requirements vary by distribution source.

Alternatives

For a self-hosted, open-source Kubernetes-focused option, consider Kubescape, whose open-source plan includes a CLI and Kubernetes operator under Apache 2.0. Choose OpenSCAP when a free, open-source toolset is the priority; it has no free trial. Lynis offers free GPLv3 software and a paid Enterprise SaaS option at 36.00 USD per year per system, making it an alternative for readers comparing free software with per-system paid use.

Qualys External Attack Surface Management has a 30-day no-cost CSAM with EASM offer and a free trial, but no free plan. Prowler Cloud has a 15-day trial with no cloud account limit and every check and compliance framework, as well as a free open-source option. CloudSploit offers a self-hosted open-source version alongside a hosted commercial version with custom pricing. Mondoo CSPM provides free open-source scanning across cloud, Kubernetes, OS, SaaS, and API, plus a Kubernetes operator and extensible provider system. DigitalOcean Cloud Security Posture Management offers a free tier for unlimited manual scans of standard rules, with a Basic option at 5.00 USD per month billed per covered workload for one scan per day. Verdict

Choose Chef InSpec if your team wants reusable, code-based compliance checks across local, cloud, and container targets, with flexible reporting and resource coverage. Its strongest case is the ability to version and reuse controls across environments. Look elsewhere if you need a free production tier or cannot accept telemetry on evaluation and free use; those limits make the Commercial plan, with custom pricing and purchase-order-based entitlements, the practical route for production deployments.
