Overview

Checkmk covers cloud, hybrid and data-center infrastructure, including servers, networks and containers. For web, mail and database servers, it combines more than 2,000 smart checks with automatic discovery and network mapping. That range is useful when an environment spans different systems: monitoring can rely on native agents, agentless checks or APIs rather than requiring one collection method everywhere.

A single instance can monitor thousands of servers, and distributed monitoring supports horizontal scaling. Deployment can be on customer hardware or virtualized, with packages for major Linux distributions, Docker and a Virtual Appliance. This flexibility makes Checkmk a credible option for growing environments, though smaller teams may find the breadth unnecessary and Community is designed for roughly 100 hosts or fewer.

Key features

Mixed monitoring methods: Native agents cover Windows, Linux and other operating systems; SNMP and TCP/UDP checks work without agents, while API checks can use HTTP/XML, SSH or TELNET. This helps teams monitor systems where installing an agent is impractical, but means they must choose and manage the appropriate method for each target.
Server and network coverage: More than 2,000 built-in integrations in Community, alongside smart checks, auto-discovery and network mapping, give teams a broad starting point for tracking infrastructure. REST APIs and custom automation scripts extend that coverage.
Cloud monitoring: AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform are supported, with automatic detection of cloud components and Quick Setup. That is useful for teams combining public cloud with other infrastructure rather than monitoring only a single environment.
Scaling and deployment: Thousands of servers can be monitored from one instance, with distributed monitoring for horizontal growth. Customer hardware, virtualized deployments, Linux packages, Docker and a Virtual Appliance offer choices, though the self-managed deployment options place infrastructure decisions with the customer.
Security and support: Ultimate offers zero-inbound, fully encrypted monitoring using push agents and Checkmk Relay. The Trust Center carries ISO 27001:2022, SOC 2 Type I, GDPR, SIG, EU AI Act and DORA badges. Pro support runs 8h x 5d; Ultimate provides 10h x 5d, with an upgrade to 24h x 5d.

Pricing

Checkmk is freemium, with a 30-day trial and a free Community plan. Community costs 0.00 USD per free, billed forever free of charge, and includes more than 2,000 pre-built integrations, community support and capacity up to approximately 100 hosts. It is the sensible starting point for a small infrastructure, but the host scale and community-only support make it a poor fit for larger or support-dependent operations.

Pro costs 275.00 USD per month, billed annually, from $275/month. It is described as low as ~$2.75/host per month and equivalent to ~3,000 services, with 8h x 5d professional support. It suits teams that need paid support and greater service capacity, but the annual billing term is a meaningful commitment.

Ultimate costs 400.00 USD per month, billed annually, from $400/month; it is described as low as ~$4.00/host per month and equivalent to ~3,000 services. Its 10h x 5d professional support can be upgraded to 24h x 5d, and its zero-inbound encrypted monitoring design makes it the stronger fit where that architecture matters. The higher price over Pro buys more support coverage and the Ultimate security approach, not a stated increase in equivalent service capacity.

Cloud costs 290.00 USD per month with monthly billing, at ~$8.70/host per month. It covers 1K–50K services, with 1 host equaling ~30 services and 99.5% availability. Monthly billing and defined service capacity may suit cloud workloads, but its per-host equivalent and service range should be weighed against the annual Pro and Ultimate terms. Synthetic Monitoring is 0.00 USD per month, billed annually, at $0.00/test for 3 free tests; it is available with Pro and Ultimate, so it is not a separate entry-level alternative to Community. Metrics retention is custom.

Platforms

Checkmk supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms. Its hybrid deployment model and support for multiple operating systems suit teams monitoring across customer-managed and cloud infrastructure; it is not limited to one operating system or hosting approach.

Who it's for

Checkmk is best suited to infrastructure teams that need server, VM, service, network and cloud monitoring together, particularly when systems require different collection methods. Community is a practical fit for smaller environments willing to rely on community support. Teams with thousands of servers can use the scaling options, while organizations that require professional support or Ultimate's monitoring architecture should budget for a paid plan. It is less attractive for a small, narrowly scoped setup that does not need this range of coverage.

Pros and cons

Pro: Agents, SNMP, TCP/UDP and API-based checks give teams alternatives when one monitoring method will not cover every system.
Pro: Cloud support spans AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform, with automatic component detection and Quick Setup.
Pro: Community is free forever and includes more than 2,000 integrations, making it a substantial starting point for small infrastructures.
Con: Community is scoped to approximately 100 hosts and provides community support, so it is not the choice for larger deployments needing professional assistance.
Con: Pro and Ultimate are billed annually, and Ultimate costs more without a stated increase over Pro's equivalent service capacity.
Con: Cloud capacity is framed in services as well as hosts, so teams must account for the roughly 30 services per host when estimating fit.

Alternatives

For a different monitoring option, Netdata has a free Community plan capped at 5 active connected nodes and 1 active custom dashboard per room. Grafana Cloud Application Observability offers a free tier with 2,232 host hours and a Pro option priced per host hour plus a monthly platform fee, which may better suit readers comparing host-hour billing. Nagios XI has a free plan limited to 7 nodes or 100 services, whichever comes first, with most Standard features and self-support; it is a more constrained free option.

VictoriaMetrics, Akamai Cloud Longview, Mackerel, Pixie and Prometheus are other alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose Checkmk if you need broad infrastructure coverage, multiple monitoring methods and deployment options that can grow with a mixed environment. Community makes it approachable for small deployments, while Pro, Cloud and Ultimate offer paid capacity and support paths. Look elsewhere if your needs are narrow, if the Community host ceiling is too low, or if annual billing and paid support do not fit your operation.
