Overview

CFEngine is a self-hosted system for automating infrastructure, security and compliance through policies that describe a desired state. It suits teams responsible for large, varied fleets that want recurring configuration enforcement; its Linux-only free Community Edition and custom-priced Enterprise option make the choice of tier consequential.

Administrators express the target state in CFEngine’s domain-specific language, and lightweight agents on managed devices work to bring actual configurations into line. Agents connect to the hub every five minutes by default, so the model favors ongoing checks over occasional manual correction. CFEngine says it can manage embedded devices, servers, cloud systems and mainframes, including fleets of tens or hundreds of thousands of nodes.

Drift detection, patch management, policy as code and compliance reporting address common operational needs. The trade-off is an agent-based, self-hosted system that requires teams to manage its deployment as well as write and maintain policies.

Key features

Desired-state policies

Policies give teams a repeatable way to define how managed systems should be configured, while agents continually converge them toward that target. The five-minute default hub connection offers regular compliance checks, but organizations should not treat it as evidence of immediate, event-triggered enforcement.

Enterprise visibility

Enterprise adds Mission Portal, a web reporting hub backed by a SQL database, plus REST APIs. Its tools cover compliance and policy analysis, alerts, inventory and change reporting, file-integrity monitoring and performance monitoring. Dashboards show real-time compliance levels and performance, support custom alerts and actions, and can be customized and shared. Inventory spans bare-metal servers, virtual machines, cloud instances and IoT devices.

The Enterprise API can use SQL to build custom reports from data in globally distributed CFEngine database servers. That depth is valuable to organizations that need fleet-wide reporting, though it is more than a small team seeking only basic configuration enforcement may need.

Security and policy catalogue

Secure bootstrap uses mutual authentication, key exchange and TLS-encrypted communication. CFEngine Build offers policies and modules from CFEngine, partners and the community, giving teams a catalogue to draw on rather than requiring every policy to start from scratch. Enterprise support includes a dedicated team, best-practice recommendations and the possibility of prioritizing requested feature development.

Pricing

CFEngine uses a freemium model, with a free plan and Enterprise pricing on request. Community Edition costs 0.00 USD per free and is licensed under GNU GPL. It includes Linux support and community support, making it the clear starting point for Linux-focused teams comfortable relying on community help. It gives up the Enterprise reporting interface and dedicated support, and its stated platform support is limited to Linux.

Enterprise Edition is free for up to 25 hosts. The license uses a single price, with no add-ons or extra functionality costs. This is a more straightforward structure than pricing separate capabilities, but organizations managing larger fleets still need a quote before budgeting. Enterprise is the fit for teams needing Mission Portal reporting and dedicated support; smaller deployments that do not need those additions can begin with Community Edition.

Platforms

CFEngine is self-hosted and agent-based. Its supported platforms include Linux distributions RHEL, Debian and Ubuntu, as well as Windows. The broader platform listing also includes macOS, web and API, but the stated supported operating systems are Linux and Windows. Teams should assess that distinction against their actual fleet before committing.

Who it's for

CFEngine is best suited to operations and infrastructure teams that need policy-driven control across large or heterogeneous environments, especially when compliance reporting, inventory visibility and recurring drift correction matter. Its ability to span device types from embedded systems to mainframes is a particular strength for organizations with more than a conventional server estate.

It is a weaker fit for teams seeking a managed cloud service, a turnkey interface in the free tier, or broad platform coverage in Community Edition. Smaller teams may find the policy and self-hosting responsibilities outweigh the benefits of fleet-scale control.

Pros and cons

Pros: The desired-state model and five-minute default agent check support continuing configuration enforcement rather than one-off setup.
Pros: The stated scale and range, from embedded devices to mainframes, suit large and mixed fleets.
Pros: Enterprise combines compliance, inventory, change and performance reporting with customizable dashboards and REST/SQL reporting.
Pros: Enterprise is free for up to 25 hosts, and its single-price license has no add-on or extra-functionality costs.
Cons: Community Edition supports Linux, so teams with Windows systems need Enterprise for the stated Windows support.
Cons: Enterprise costs beyond 25 hosts require a custom quote, complicating budget comparisons for larger deployments.
Cons: Self-hosting and policy authoring put operational and maintenance work on the team adopting it.

Alternatives

Rudder is worth considering for teams seeking an open-source configuration management option with a free plan and support for Linux, Windows and self-hosted deployments.

Salt is a free, Apache 2.0-licensed option for teams that want its open-source plan and Linux, macOS or Windows support.

Foreman is a free, open-source, self-managed alternative for teams whose needs fit its Linux and web platform coverage.

Puppet may suit teams comparing freemium configuration management: Puppet Enterprise has custom pricing and 10 nodes free, while Enterprise Advanced is also custom priced.

Canonical Landscape is a Linux-focused alternative with a free Ubuntu Pro account for up to 5 machines; its managed public-cloud, VMware, OpenStack or LXD plan is priced at 6861.

Chef Infra is a free alternative with a paid Business plan at 59.00 USD per year, billed per node, per year.

OpenTofu is a free, open-source infrastructure-as-code option for teams whose needs fit its Linux, macOS, self-hosted and Windows coverage.

Pulumi is another freemium choice, with a free plan for teams comparing infrastructure-as-code tools.

Verdict

Choose CFEngine if your team can operate a self-hosted, policy-driven system and needs recurring control across a large or varied fleet, especially when Enterprise reporting is important. Its central advantage is combining continuous desired-state enforcement with the scale and reporting breadth to oversee complex infrastructure. Look elsewhere if you need a managed service, a broader free-tier platform range, or predictable Enterprise pricing beyond 25 hosts.
