Overview

Vatstack is a VAT API and web dashboard for businesses handling cross-border tax on telecommunications, broadcasting, and electronic services. It is best suited to teams building tax checks into their own sales workflows; its combination of rate lookup, number verification, and reporting is useful, though usage charges make volume planning important.

Key features

Rates, location, and calculation

Vatstack centralizes domestic and cross-border VAT rates and updates them when government changes take effect at midnight local time. It can determine customer location from an IP address using MaxMind GeoIP2 or from a billing address, then calculate VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive prices. VAT number checks can support exemption, and rates can be adjusted for some digital products, including ebooks. This covers key needs for digital sellers, but businesses should ensure its VAT-focused workflow fits their tax operation.

Verification and evidence

Real-time VAT and GST checks cover the 27 EU member states, Australia, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. EU and UK checks receive a unique consultation number, and validation records are stored in the cloud and replicated between EU data centers on AWS. Bulk CSV validation through the dashboard gives teams with many IDs a more practical route than checking them one at a time.

Reporting and integration

Vatstack compiles VAT OSS and EC Sales List reports, converting amounts to the reporting currency using European Central Bank exchange rates. Its Stripe integration syncs invoices, location evidence, and tax IDs, and adjusts reports when customers are refunded. That combination can reduce manual reconciliation for businesses already using Stripe; the service also offers API access for teams integrating tax functions into their own systems.

Pricing

Vatstack is freemium, with paid plans starting at $15/mo. The Developer plan is free for life and includes unlimited quotes, dummy validations, and dummy supplies; it is useful for development, but those dummy operations are not a substitute for live monthly capacity. Launch starts at $0/mo* and includes 100 VAT validations and 20 VAT sales, then charges $0.09 per additional validation and $0.45 per additional sale. It offers a low-cost entry point, but the per-use rates can add up as activity grows.

Small Business starts at $15/mo* and includes 500 VAT validations and 100 supplies per month, with additional validations at $0.03 and supplies at $0.15. It suits modest live workloads and lowers overage rates versus Launch. Enterprise starts at $150/mo* and includes 15,000 validations and 3,000 supplies per month, with additional validations at $0.01 and supplies at $0.05, plus a 99.95% SLA. Its larger included capacity and service commitment are aimed at higher-volume operations. The published capacities make it important to estimate monthly validations and sales or supplies before choosing a plan.

Platforms

Vatstack is available through an API and web dashboard. Its API orientation suits developers embedding tax functions into a product, while the dashboard supports tasks such as bulk CSV validation.

Who it's for

Vatstack is a strong fit for businesses selling digital services across borders that need VAT and GST checks, rate-aware calculations, audit evidence, and VAT reporting in one workflow. It is less compelling for teams that do not need a VAT-specific service or whose use would regularly exceed plan capacity and make per-use charges difficult to manage.

Pros and cons

Pro: Combines rate lookup, location checks, inclusive or exclusive calculations, and number validation for digital-service sales.
Pro: EU and UK consultation numbers, replicated validation records, and VAT OSS and EC Sales List reporting support compliance workflows.
Pro: CSV bulk checks and Stripe synchronization can reduce repetitive validation and reconciliation work.
Con: Live capacity is limited by plan, and additional validations and sales or supplies incur per-use charges.
Con: The free Developer plan is for dummy operations, while Launch has low included live volumes.

Verdict

Choose Vatstack if your business sells digital services internationally and needs VAT rate handling, verifiable IDs, and reporting exposed through an API and dashboard. Its broad VAT workflow is the main reason to choose it; capacity limits and per-use fees are the main reasons to compare alternatives if your volumes or tax needs extend beyond that fit.
