Overview

CarbonTool combines emissions measurement, reporting and reduction planning. Its shared data backbone supports CSRD, VSME, GRI, CDP and ISSB reporting, while teams can track subsidiaries, sites or business units separately and consolidate them into a group inventory. That breadth matters to organizations with distributed operations; a single-entity business may have little use for consolidation.

Each data point carries its source, unit, emission factor, quality level and audit trail. This makes it easier to examine how reported figures were assembled. Reduction targets and scenario planning add a forward-looking component, with comparisons covering impact, cost and return.

Key features

Measurement and data collection

More than 200 templates provide emission-source methodologies, measurement units and factors, with DEFRA, EPA, ecoinvent and ADEME databases included. Teams can enter data manually, upload Excel or CSV files, use AI uploads, connect through an API or import SAF-T data. This range accommodates different collection workflows, while the templates offer a structured starting point for categorizing activity.

CarbonTool also supports supplier engagement and emissions data collection, with Scope 1–3 coverage on paid plans. Customers can connect systems through an API or MCP; MCP server access is on request.

Reporting and reduction planning

The framework coverage gives companies a single data foundation for several reporting needs rather than separate inventories for each framework. Scenario comparisons that weigh impact, cost and return can help teams assess reduction choices, though the platform’s reporting and planning breadth comes at a substantial annual starting cost.

Security and support

CarbonTool says it is built and hosted in the EU, with emissions data remaining on EU infrastructure under EU data protection law. Monthly support ranges from two hours on Core to six hours plus priority on Enterprise, a distinction that may matter to organizations needing more assistance as reporting obligations grow.

Pricing

CarbonTool is paid software with a free, 30-day Starter option. The trial provides full access for 30 days without a credit card or automatic charge; after it lapses, trial data is retained for 90 days. Starter’s continuing scope is limited to Scope 1 and 2, so it is useful for an initial assessment but not a substitute for full Scope 3 accounting.

Starter: 0.00 USD per free. Offers Scope 1 and 2 core measurement. The 30-day full-access period makes it suitable for evaluating the workflow, but its scope ceiling excludes Scope 3.
Core: 2000.00 USD per year, billed 2,000€/ year. Includes single-entity measurement, full platform access and two hours of monthly support. It fits a company with one entity that needs the paid platform’s full scope.
Pro: 5000.00 USD per year, billed 5,000€/ year. Adds multi-unit tracking and consolidation, VSME reporting and four hours of monthly support. It is aimed at SMEs with multiple entities or a supply-chain focus.
Enterprise: 7500.00 USD per year, billed 7,500€/ year. Includes multi-unit support, CSRD reporting and six hours of monthly support plus priority. It is positioned for large organizations with CSRD obligations.

The lower paid tiers trade away the higher plans’ specific reporting and support allowances: Core is single-entity, while Pro adds consolidation and VSME coverage but not the Enterprise CSRD package or priority support. Compare the tier’s scope and included assistance with your reporting workload before committing.

Platforms

CarbonTool is available on web and through an API. Its EU hosting and residency approach may suit organizations that need emissions data to stay on EU infrastructure.

Who it's for

CarbonTool is a strong candidate for companies that need structured Scope 1–3 accounting, framework reporting and a traceable audit trail, particularly when several sites or entities need to roll up into one inventory. Core suits single-entity companies; Pro better matches SMEs with multiple units or supply-chain concerns; Enterprise is aimed at large CSRD-obligated organizations. It is less compelling for a small organization needing only limited Scope 1 and 2 tracking beyond the trial.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad input support: Manual entry, files, AI uploads, API connections and SAF-T imports give teams several routes to collect activity data.
Traceable figures: Source, unit, factor, quality level and audit trail stay attached to data points, supporting review of reported totals.
Reporting and consolidation in one platform: Multiple frameworks and entity-level tracking serve organizations that need both local records and group inventories.
Reduction planning is included: Targets and scenario comparisons connect accounting with choices about impact, cost and return.

Cons

Starter stops at Scope 1 and 2: Teams needing Scope 3 must move to a paid plan.
Paid entry starts at 2,000€/ year: That annual commitment may be hard to justify for organizations with modest reporting needs.
Support varies by tier: Core includes two monthly hours, while six hours and priority support require Enterprise.
MCP access is not self-serve: Server access is on request, so teams expecting to enable it directly should account for that step.

Alternatives

Carbon Accounting Software is a useful category overview for comparing options. Persefoni is worth considering for a no-cost, single-user self-service plan with unlimited assets and historical reporting years; its free tier differs from CarbonTool’s time-limited Starter. Carbonfact may suit suppliers seeking a free environmental-data exchange and LCA verification, or organizations looking for product-catalogue LCAs.

ACT Group Decarbonization Platform, Normative, Watershed, Sweep and SINAI Technologies are other paid alternatives. CarbonAnalytics is an option for teams preferring a monthly Starter plan: it costs 69.99 GBP per month per business unit and covers up to 300 suppliers, one report framework and three users, with basic automation and email support.

Verdict

Choose CarbonTool if your organization needs auditable Scope 1–3 measurement, several reporting frameworks and entity consolidation alongside reduction planning. Its strongest case is the combination of provenance, reporting and group-level accounting; look elsewhere if your needs are limited to Scope 1 and 2 or the annual paid-plan cost outweighs that breadth.
