Overview

Canonical MAAS is open-source software for provisioning and managing physical servers as cloud resources. It is best for infrastructure teams building private clouds, automating server fleets, or deploying bare-metal Kubernetes. Its broad control over the server lifecycle is compelling, but controller support and high availability make plan selection consequential.

Key features

MAAS automates discovery, inventory, commissioning, deployment, and decommissioning, reducing the need to treat each physical machine as a separate provisioning project. PXE boot discovery, IPMI support, and visibility across subnets, VLANs, and switch fabrics make it suited to varied server environments.

The API integrates with Terraform, Juju, and Ansible, so teams can fold bare-metal provisioning into infrastructure-as-code and orchestration practices. MAAS supports Ubuntu, CentOS, Windows, and RHEL images, with synchronization or an onsite mirror for offline use. That breadth is useful for mixed operating-system estates, although teams should confirm their own image requirements before standardizing on it.

Networking controls include IP assignment, bonding, VLAN configuration, virtual bridges, static routes, DHCP, and DNS. Storage layouts cover Bcache, RAID, and LVM. LXD and KVM capabilities allow virtual machines to be created and managed through the UI, CLI, and API, extending the platform beyond physical-node provisioning. Built-in or uploaded hardware tests, plus historical test data and metrics, help teams track machine condition over time.

Installation can start with a single machine running region and rack services, an option suited to a homelab, proof of concept, or small production setup. Multiple controllers support high availability, but that expansion comes with a support requirement: MAAS controllers require Ubuntu Pro. Ubuntu Pro also provides security patching and enterprise support for controllers and Ubuntu machines, while standalone support for machines not running Ubuntu Pro still requires Ubuntu Pro on the controller hosts.

Pricing

MAAS has a free self-support plan and paid annual plans billed per managed machine. The free tier covers all machines, but excludes high-availability support, RBAC, the knowledge base, a Sev 1 response SLA, and phone or ticket support. It is a practical fit for evaluation or environments that can manage operations independently; it gives up precisely the support and access controls that matter more as deployments grow.

Self-support: 0.00 USD per free. Free for all machines, with no HA support, RBAC, Knowledge Base, Sev 1 response SLA, phone support, or ticket support.
Essential: 30.00 USD per year, billed per managed machine. Adds HA support, RBAC, and Knowledge Base access, but no Sev 1 response SLA, phone, or ticket support. It suits teams that need operational features but can handle incidents without contracted response.
Standard: 50.00 USD per year, billed per managed machine. Includes HA support, RBAC, Knowledge Base, a 4-hour Sev 1 response time, and phone and ticket support during office hours. This is the more balanced choice for teams needing a defined response and business-hours assistance.
Advanced: 100.00 USD per year, billed per managed machine. Includes HA support, RBAC, Knowledge Base, a 1-hour Sev 1 response time, and phone and ticket support 24 hours a day, every day. It is aimed at operations where around-the-clock access and faster incident response justify the highest per-machine cost.

Because paid rates scale with each managed machine, larger fleets should weigh that recurring cost against the support and HA benefits they need. Ubuntu Pro is required for controllers, so controller hosting must be part of the deployment and support decision rather than treated as an optional extra.

Platforms

MAAS is available through API, Linux, self-hosted, and web options, and supports network-based, unattended deployment. Its bare-metal, multi-OS orientation makes it a server infrastructure tool, not a general desktop backup or endpoint utility.

Who it's for

MAAS is a strong fit for teams operating private cloud with OpenStack, automating server provisioning, or deploying bare-metal Kubernetes. The single-machine installation offers a way to start small, while multiple controllers address high availability for larger environments. It is less suitable for teams that need a free system with HA, role-based access, or support, or that cannot meet the Ubuntu Pro controller requirement.

Pros and cons

Pro: Full lifecycle automation from discovery through decommissioning gives server teams one control plane for repeated physical-machine operations.
Pro: Terraform, Juju, and Ansible integration, alongside UI, CLI, and API access, supports both interactive administration and automated infrastructure workflows.
Pro: Broad network and storage configuration, plus LXD and KVM capabilities, lets teams manage more than initial operating-system deployment.
Con: The free plan excludes HA, RBAC, and every form of direct support, limiting its fit for production teams that need those safeguards.
Con: Paid plans charge per managed machine, and controllers require Ubuntu Pro, adding cost and planning considerations as deployments expand.

Alternatives

For a different approach to server provisioning, compare OS Deployment Software, Bare Metal Provisioning Software, and IT Automation Software.

Acronis Cyber Disaster Recovery Cloud is a paid option with a free trial and broad platform support; consider it when disaster recovery is the priority rather than MAAS’s bare-metal provisioning focus.
AOMEI Backupper offers a perpetually free Windows PC backup plan, so it is a better fit for Windows backup needs than server-fleet provisioning.
Foreman is free, open source, and self-managed; consider it if those characteristics are the deciding factors.
Clonezilla is free and open source under GPL version 2, making it an alternative to consider when that licensing and cost profile fits.
FAI (Fully Automatic Installation) is free software under GNU GPL version 2 or later; it may suit readers prioritizing that free-software model.
iVentoy has a free edition with no usage time limit, but its listed limits include no commercial use and a maximum of 20 clients, making it a more constrained alternative.
OPSI offers a free Community plan with unlimited devices and core features, and a Basic plan capped at 30 devices; consider it when those endpoint-management plan terms fit better.
OSDCloud is a free Windows 11 deployment tool that requires WinPE and internet access, so it is suited to that narrower deployment case.

Verdict

Choose Canonical MAAS if you need a central system to automate physical-server provisioning and lifecycle management across a bare-metal cloud or Kubernetes environment. Its API integrations and hardware, network, and storage controls make it more than a boot-and-image utility. Look elsewhere if you need HA or support without per-machine charges, or cannot use Ubuntu Pro on controller hosts.
