Overview

BuddySOS shares members’ current locations with their group and keeps no location history. The maker says it does not sell location data and limits sharing to group members. That is a sensible approach for real-time coordination, but anyone who wants to review where someone has been will need another option.

A one-tap SOS alerts the active group with the sender’s live GPS location, even when the phone is locked. SOS can also send emergency contacts a live-location link by SMS through Twilio; recipients do not need the app. This gives users a way to reach beyond the group, though the SMS feature is an alert channel, not a promise of emergency response.

Key features

Safe zones

Groups are alerted when a member enters or leaves a safe zone. Each group can set up to five, but the 100-meter minimum radius favors broad boundaries such as event grounds over precise checks around a small building or meeting point. The free plan permits just one zone, so users who need several boundaries will need Pro.

Battery and privacy

Battery Saver Mode adjusts location checks based on movement, and the app says it does not hold a wake lock while the screen is off. That may suit people who want ongoing sharing without a screen kept awake, while the service’s encryption should be understood on its stated terms: data is encrypted in transit and at rest, but not end-to-end.

Group coordination

Event staff can use shared live maps and SOS on existing iOS or Android phones, without extra hardware or IT setup. This makes BuddySOS a practical option for teams already carrying compatible phones. Sign-up requires a phone number and text-message code, and is currently listed for numbers from the US, Canada, UK, and EU.

Pricing

BuddySOS has a free plan at 0.00 USD per free, with one group, one safe zone, and ads. It is enough for a small group that needs basic location sharing and SOS, but the single-group cap is a constraint for users coordinating separate circles, and the one-zone cap limits check-in coverage.

BuddySOS Pro costs 1.99 USD per month, billed Monthly at $1.99/month. It removes ads and adds more groups and zones, making it the relevant upgrade for users whose coordination needs exceed the free caps. The plan description does not give a specific paid group or zone quota, so users who need a fixed capacity should confirm it before subscribing.

Platforms

BuddySOS supports Android and iOS. Its event-staff use case does not require dedicated hardware, but phone-number sign-up is limited to numbers from the US, Canada, UK, and EU.

Who it's for

BuddySOS makes the most sense for families, friends, festival groups, and event teams that prioritize live location, entry-and-exit alerts, and a quick SOS route. It is less suitable for users who need location history, precise small-area geofences, or end-to-end encrypted sharing.

Pros and cons

Pros: SOS can alert both the active group and contacts outside the app through a live-location SMS link.
Pros: Shared live maps and SOS work on staff members’ existing Android or iOS phones, without extra hardware or IT setup.
Pros: The free plan includes a group and a safe zone, giving a small group a no-cost way to coordinate.
Cons: The free plan’s one-group and one-zone limits may be too restrictive for users managing multiple circles or check-in points.
Cons: Safe zones cannot be smaller than 100 meters, limiting their usefulness for precise boundaries.
Cons: BuddySOS keeps no location history and is not end-to-end encrypted, which rules it out for some tracking or privacy needs.

Alternatives

Family Locator Apps is a useful place to compare more options. Choose Be Closer if you want a free real-time location option with a published Premium plan at 3.99 USD per month that includes unlimited location history. CircleUs is worth considering for its free plan, which includes up to five members, three place alerts, two Circles, real-time location, SOS, temporary sharing, and a privacy bubble. Choose Family Locator if you want an alternative with Android, iOS, and macOS support and a free version described as including complete functionality. Findmykids offers an alternative with Android, iOS, and web support. iSharing is another Android, iOS, and web option, with a free plan that includes one place alert and standard SOS. OtoZen is another freemium alternative for Android and iOS. Bluelane is an option for iOS and web users. Family Beacon is an Android and web alternative with live location sharing and SOS in its free plan.

Verdict

Choose BuddySOS if your group needs current locations, broad safe-zone alerts, and an SOS that can reach both group members and outside contacts. Look elsewhere if you need movement history, tight geofences, or end-to-end encryption; for a small group willing to work within the free caps, BuddySOS offers a focused set of practical safety tools.
