Overview

WinSCP pairs a graphical interface with transfers between a local computer and remote servers. Explorer and Commander layouts provide different ways to work, with Commander designed for keyboard control. Common file operations, directory synchronization and an integrated text editor let users handle routine remote-file tasks in the same application as transfers.

It is open source, free and available in a portable version. This is a focused local-to-remote file client, rather than a general-purpose cloud workspace, so it suits server and file-transfer workflows better than broader storage needs.

Key features

Protocols and file operations

WinSCP supports FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SCP, WebDAV, WebDAVS and S3. That range makes it practical for users dealing with different server types without switching clients for each protocol. Workspaces help manage sessions, and port forwarding is supported. The integrated editor and directory synchronization add useful file-management capabilities, though users who need only occasional basic transfers may not need this wider toolkit.

Automation and integrations

Scripting, command-line options and a .NET assembly support repeatable jobs and more advanced programming tasks. That makes WinSCP a stronger fit for administrators and technical users than a client restricted to manual transfers. Windows and PuTTY integration, including shared site settings, can also suit users already working with PuTTY.

Authentication and security

Documented authentication methods include passwords, keyboard-interactive authentication, public keys and Kerberos. Pageant integration supports SSH public-key authentication, while an optional master password can protect stored site information. These safeguards do not protect a compromised computer: malicious software on the machine running WinSCP can steal credentials entered or stored there. The host computer's security therefore matters to anyone relying on saved access details.

Pricing

WinSCP costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the Windows transfer client with SFTP, FTP, FTPS, SCP, WebDAV and S3 support; the software is also open source. There is no paid tier to unlock the core client, and no free-trial period to weigh against a subscription. Users who need its supported Windows workflows can use the full offering without a recurring plan cost.

Platforms

WinSCP runs on Microsoft Windows, and its portable version offers an alternative to a standard installation. That is useful for Windows users who want portable use, but the platform restriction is decisive for anyone needing native support on macOS, Linux, iOS or Android.

Who it's for

Choose WinSCP if you use Windows and want one free client for varied transfer protocols, remote file management and automation. Its editor, synchronization and scripting capabilities make it particularly suitable for users who manage remote files regularly or need repeatable transfer tasks. Look elsewhere if Windows is not an option, or if your main need is a broader cloud-storage workspace rather than local-to-remote transfers.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad protocol support, including S3, WebDAV and SSH-based transfers, reduces the need for separate clients across server types.
Pros: File operations, directory synchronization and an integrated editor combine transfer and routine remote management tasks.
Pros: Scripting, command-line access and a .NET assembly support automation and custom programming workflows.
Pros: Free and open source, with a portable version for Windows users.
Cons: Windows is the only supported platform, so it is not a fit for users who need the same client across other operating systems.
Cons: Credentials remain exposed to malware on the computer running the software, even when stored site information is protected with a master password.

Verdict

WinSCP is an easy recommendation for Windows users who want a free, open-source client that combines broad transfer support with file management and automation. Its strongest reason to choose it is the range of protocols and workflows in one tool; its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the Windows-only platform.
