Overview

Brex is company spend software for finance teams that want employee spending, expense processing, budgets, and accounting workflows under shared controls. It is best suited to startups and growing or international companies; teams needing more than two entities should weigh the cost of moving beyond Essentials.

Its strongest case is combining spending rules with automated expense work and accounting support. That breadth is less compelling for a small team that needs only a basic card program or reimbursement tool.

Key features

Controls and budgets

Policies can vary by use case, seniority, department, or entity, and specified merchants or categories can be blocked or routed for approval. This gives finance teams a way to prevent or review purchases before they become expenses, rather than relying solely on reconciliation afterward. Live Budgets lets department heads allocate spend to people or teams and monitor usage in real time, with Brex AI flagging anomalous activity. These controls are most useful where spending authority is distributed across departments; the Essentials entity limit may be restrictive as a company expands.

Expense and accounting workflows

Brex can collect expense documents, generate memos, fill in fields, assign departments and general-ledger codes, and match receipts with OCR across languages and currencies. That combination targets repetitive work in expense processing, especially for teams dealing with varied currencies. QuickBooks and NetSuite are named ERP integrations, and the accounting automation can suggest coding rules and mappings. Brex also offers thousands of native integrations, with examples including Slack, Rippling, Workday, and Xero. Some integrations may be add-ons, so teams should account for that when considering the cost of a broader setup.

Reimbursements, mobile, and security

Employees can receive reimbursements in local currency to bank accounts in 40 countries, without per-transaction reimbursement fees. The mobile app supports expense tracking, travel booking and management, spend-limit requests, and payments, making it useful for employees who need to manage work spending away from a desktop. Brex states that it is SOC 1 Type II, SOC 2 Type II, and PCI-DSS compliant, and describes encryption, two-factor authentication, and fraud monitoring. Its fraud protection includes 24/7 support, with support contact available through the dashboard or mobile app.

Pricing

Brex uses a freemium model. Essentials costs 0.00 USD per month, billed at $0 user/month, and includes up to two entities (one global entity) and one local card program. That is a practical entry point for companies that can operate within those boundaries; the entity cap and single card program limit its fit for more complex operations.

Premium costs 12.00 USD per month, billed at $12 user/month, and supports multi-entity operations in the US and internationally. It is the stated paid starting point for businesses that have outgrown Essentials' entity allowance. Enterprise has custom pricing and includes unlimited US or global entities, making it the relevant tier for organizations that need broader entity coverage. Smart Card also has custom pricing and provides local-currency cards in 50+ countries. Some integrations may be add-ons, so the plan price alone may not represent the full cost of a chosen configuration.

Platforms

Brex is available on Android, iOS, and the web, and offers an API. Its mobile app covers expense tracking, travel booking and management, spend-limit requests, and payments.

Who it's for

Brex says it serves startups, scaled companies, and ecommerce brands, including founders, CFOs, and their teams. It is a stronger fit for organizations that need controls across teams or entities, automated expense administration, and accounting connections than for buyers seeking only a basic card or standalone expense feature.

Pros and cons

Pros: Policies can block or require approval for particular merchants and categories, giving finance teams a direct way to govern purchases.
Pros: Expense automation spans document collection, coding, and receipt matching, while QuickBooks and NetSuite integrations support accounting workflows.
Pros: Reimbursements can reach local-currency bank accounts across 40 countries with no per-transaction fees.
Cons: Essentials is capped at two entities and one local card program, which may not suit companies with more involved entity structures.
Cons: Premium is priced per user, and Enterprise and Smart Card use custom pricing; add-on integration costs may also affect the total.

Alternatives

Consider Moss if a free plan for up to three users, unlimited cards, and up to 20 invoices per month better matches a small team's needs; its free wallet is debit-only. Pluto Card may suit an SME prioritizing a free plan with no monthly subscriptions for up to 10 users.

Float is worth comparing if a free Canadian-dollar plan with up to 20 physical and unlimited virtual cards, plus QBO, Xero, or custom exports, fits the operation. Airwallex Corporate Cards may be preferable for unlimited multi-currency corporate cards with zero international fees and up to 2% cash rebates on local USD spend under its free Explore plan.

Mesh Payments offers a free Pro plan for up to three users and a Premium plan at 13.00 USD per month billed per user, per month; it may fit buyers comparing those user and price thresholds. Wallester Business is an option for teams seeking a free plan with 300 virtual cards, unlimited physical card issuance, and unlimited employee seats.

Pleo may be a better fit for buyers prepared for paid plans and a free trial: its Start plan costs 8.00 GBP per month on monthly billing and is limited to one admin, one vendor card, and a credit limit up to £5,000 for eligible customers. Aspire is another option to compare for multi-currency accounts across 13 currencies alongside virtual cards, invoices, bills, budgets, claims, and analytics.

Verdict

Brex is a strong choice for startups and growing or international companies that want policy-driven spending, automated expense work, and accounting workflows in one system. Its main reason to choose it is the combination of controls and automation; look elsewhere if Essentials' entity and card-program limits are too narrow or if per-user pricing and custom-priced tiers do not fit the budget.
