Overview

Blockbench is a low-poly 3D model editor for people making game assets, especially Minecraft resource packs, skins, and custom entities. It is a strong fit for creators who want modeling, texturing, and animation in one free tool; users needing scripting support should look elsewhere.

Key features

Modeling and texturing

Blockbench combines cuboid and mesh modeling, giving users two ways to build low-poly shapes. Its visual editor also supports multiple version targets, resource packs, and custom entity tools, which make it relevant to Minecraft asset work as well as broader game modeling.

Texture work can happen alongside the model: users can create, edit, and paint textures, generate a UV map and template, and paint directly on a 3D model. Connecting an external image editor or pixel-art program leaves room for a preferred texture workflow. Support for HD skins and slim (Alex) models adds specific value for Minecraft skin creators.

Animation and extensibility

The animation editor includes rigging, position, rotation, and scale keyframes, plus a graph editor. That makes Blockbench useful for creators who need to animate models rather than stop at static geometry. The built-in plugin store offers tools, export formats, and model generators, and users can make their own plugins, extending the editor beyond its core feature set.

The project is open source under the GPL license. That is a meaningful advantage for users who value open-source software, though scripting support is not included.

Pricing

Blockbench costs 0.00 USD per free. Its free plan is available for any type of project, with no strings attached, so it suits hobbyists, educators, and creators who want the full free-to-use offering without a paid tier to weigh against it. There is no free trial because the product is free to use.

There are no paid plans or stated seat or usage caps to compare. The plan's lack of scripting support is the notable limitation for users who want to build workflows around scripts.

Platforms

Blockbench is available on the web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The web app provides a browser-based option, while the range of desktop and mobile platforms gives users flexibility about where to work.

Who it's for

Blockbench is best suited to Minecraft creators and game-asset makers who want to shape low-poly models, prepare textures, and animate in a visual editor. Skin creators can use its HD skin, slim model, and paint-on-model support. It is less suitable for people whose workflow depends on scripting, or who need a different kind of modeling tool beyond the low-poly focus.

Pros and cons

Pros: Modeling, UV preparation, texture painting, and animation live in one editor, reducing the need to switch tools for common low-poly asset work.
Pros: The plugin store and user-created plugins offer ways to add tools, export formats, and model generators.
Pros: Free use for any type of project and GPL licensing make it accessible to both personal and project use.
Cons: Scripting support is absent, limiting it for users who need script-based workflows.
Cons: Model Sharing stores data for the duration users select; users can request earlier removal, but should choose that duration deliberately.
Cons: The privacy policy says the software may collect anonymized usage data and cannot guarantee absolute security. Local Storage and Cookies are used for functionality such as remembering preferences.

Alternatives

For a narrower Minecraft skin-editing need, Laby Skin Studio is a free, browser-based option that requires no account and exports 64×64 PNGs for Minecraft: Java Edition. Choose it when that focused skin workflow is enough; Blockbench is the broader choice for modeling and animation.

The Skindex is another free option, available on Android, iOS, and the web. The free browser-based MCTools may suit users looking for Minecraft tools rather than Blockbench's broader modeling editor.

Other free options include Nova Skin, PMCSkin3D, mcskins.top, and SkinMC. For related categories, see Minecraft Skin Editors, Minecraft Mod Development Tools, Game 3D Modeling Software, Game Character Creation Software, Minecraft Add-on Editors, and 3D modeling software.

Verdict

Choose Blockbench if you want a free, open-source editor that brings low-poly modeling, texture work, and animation together, especially for Minecraft assets. Look elsewhere if scripting is central to your workflow or model-sharing storage terms do not suit how you handle your work.
