Overview

Bifrost puts more than 20 AI providers behind one OpenAI-compatible API, so teams can route model calls through a shared gateway. It also works with MCP tools as both a client and server, connecting to external tool servers and exposing tools to clients such as Claude Desktop. That makes it relevant to systems using agents and tools as well as conventional LLM calls.

Weighted load balancing, retries, automatic provider failover, and semantic caching address reliability and repeated requests. Virtual keys let teams set permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing for each consumer. These controls are useful when multiple applications or teams share AI infrastructure, but Bifrost is an operating layer to manage, not a hosted model catalog for casual users.

Key features

Provider access and routing: One API covers 20+ providers, with load balancing, retries, and automatic failover. This can simplify provider management and help keep requests moving, though teams still need to operate the gateway.
Consumer governance: Virtual keys assign permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing by consumer. This gives operators a way to separate usage across teams or applications rather than treating all traffic alike.
MCP support and SDKs: Bifrost connects to external MCP servers and exposes tools to clients such as Claude Desktop. Documented integrations include OpenAI, Anthropic, Google GenAI, LiteLLM, and LangChain SDKs, giving teams several existing development paths.
Monitoring and security: Built-in request monitoring, Prometheus metrics, and OpenTelemetry tracing integrations support operational visibility. Security practices include dependency and code scanning, Docker image scanning, and hardened non-root production containers.
Enterprise controls: SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, and private VPC deployments extend governance for production teams. These are Enterprise features, so teams needing them should account for custom pricing.

Pricing

Bifrost has a free OSS edition and a 14-day Enterprise trial. The OSS plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever, and is self-hosted under Apache 2.0. It can run through NPX, Docker, Kubernetes, or a Go binary, and includes documentation, community, and self-management support. That makes it a practical fit for developers and small teams willing to run their own gateway; the tradeoff is that SLA-backed support and Enterprise controls are not part of this plan.

Enterprise has custom pricing and is aimed at production deployments. It adds SSO, role-based access control, audit logs, guardrails, vault integrations, private VPC deployments, SLA-backed support, and direct access to engineers. The 14-day trial is free on an enterprise license. Teams should weigh those production controls and support against the fact that pricing is custom rather than a fixed per-seat or usage price.

Platforms

Bifrost supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted use. Its deployment options include an HTTP API gateway through NPX or Docker, as well as Kubernetes and a Go binary for self-hosting. This breadth favors teams comfortable choosing and managing their deployment environment.

Who it's for

The OSS edition is best suited to developers, small teams, and organizations that want a self-managed gateway for routing model and tool traffic. Enterprise is the better fit for teams running AI systems at scale that need centralized governance, private deployment options, or SLA-backed support. Readers looking for a hosted service with a fixed published price should consider alternatives instead.

Pros and cons

Pro: One OpenAI-compatible API reaches 20+ providers, reducing the need to manage each provider connection separately.
Pro: Virtual keys combine permissions, budgets, rate limits, and routing, giving operators controls at the consumer level.
Pro: OSS supports several self-hosting methods and is free forever, making it accessible to teams prepared to manage deployment themselves.
Con: Self-hosting means the team takes on operation and management rather than relying on a hosted service.
Con: Enterprise pricing is custom, which makes cost harder to compare before contacting the vendor.
Con: SSO, audit logs, and other Enterprise controls, along with SLA-backed support, are not part of OSS.

Alternatives

LLM Gateway Software is a broader comparison for readers who want to evaluate gateway options across the category.

Kong Gateway is worth considering for teams whose gateway needs extend beyond Bifrost's AI-focused routing and governance. TensorZero is a free, open-source, fully self-hosted LLMOps platform for teams prioritizing that model. Helicone is an open-source alternative for teams looking for a different AI software option with a free plan.

LangSmith offers a Developer plan at 0.00 USD per month, with up to 5k base traces per month, one seat, community support, and pay-as-you-go beyond the included traces; it may suit teams focused on trace workflows. LiteLLM offers a free-forever, self-hosted open-source plan with 100+ providers, virtual keys, spend tracking, budgets, and rate limits, making it a close alternative for teams comparing provider breadth and usage controls.

LLM Gateway has a free plan with 200+ models across 40+ providers, but charges 5% on credit usage and limits free-model requests to 20 per minute; it fits readers who prefer that model-and-provider catalog and accept those terms. Manifest offers unlimited self-hosting and 10,000 routed requests per month on its free Cloud plan, so it may suit teams comparing agent routing limits. OpenRouter offers free inference access to 25+ free models and 4 free providers, with a 50-request daily cap, for readers who want a web-based model access option rather than a self-hosted gateway.

Verdict

Choose Bifrost if you want to self-host one gateway for broad provider access, routing reliability, and per-consumer controls across model and MCP traffic. Its free forever OSS plan makes that operational approach accessible, while Enterprise adds the governance and support production teams may need. Look elsewhere if you want a hosted, fixed-price service or do not want to manage deployment.
