Overview

Founded in 2012 and based in Gaylord, Michigan, BiddingOwl serves nonprofits, schools, charities, and other organizations. It covers event setup, item previews, ticket sales, donations, and checkout alongside auctions. Traditional silent and live services cost nothing through BiddingOwl, while online and mobile bids incur a fee when an item receives a winning bid. Payment processor fees may also apply, so organizations should factor both costs into online fundraising budgets.

Key features

The service supports online, mobile, silent, live, and offline auctions. That breadth can suit organizations whose events vary in format, while groups running only one kind of auction may have less reason to value the range. Donations, admission and raffle tickets, Fund-a-Need, and paddle raises come as standard features, allowing organizers to combine common fundraising activities without separate paid add-ons.

Bidders can save items to a watchlist and set a maximum proxy bid, letting automated bidding continue up to their chosen limit. SMS and email alerts cover outbids, wins, and event updates, which helps participants keep track of activity without continuously checking the auction.

Payments connect through Stripe and PayPal; organizers can also record cash and check transactions by marking invoices paid. The payment integrations page says Stripe and PayPal use SSL encryption and are PCI compliant. Organizers can import auction items from CSV, export item data, manage and duplicate events, and retain their data. One login can manage multiple organizations and auctions at the same time, a practical advantage for people coordinating more than one group or event.

BiddingOwl offers weekday phone and email support, plus 24/7 phone support for critical emergencies. Customers can schedule personal training by phone or email. The company says its platform runs on AWS and is built for high bidding volumes; that is a stated infrastructure aim, not a reason to overlook the online/mobile fee.

Pricing

The Traditional silent/live auction and related services plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It covers event setup, item previews, printed bid sheets, ticket sales, donations, and checkout. This is the clearest fit for organizations running traditional events that want those services without a BiddingOwl charge; payment processor fees may still apply.

The Online/mobile auction plan costs 5.00 USD per once, billed as a 5% performance fee on winning online/mobile bids. It applies only when an item receives a winning online or mobile bid, and pre-bid fees are based on the pre-bid amount. This ties the platform charge to successful bidding rather than event setup, but organizations should account for the fee on proceeds and any processor fees. BiddingOwl does not publish a recurring subscription charge in these plans.

Platforms

BiddingOwl is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The mobile options complement its mobile bidding support, while the web platform gives organizers and participants another way to access the service.

Who it's for

BiddingOwl fits nonprofits, schools, charities, and other organizations that need ticketing or donation tools alongside auctions, especially those holding silent or live events and wanting online or mobile bidding as an option. Its multiple-organization support is also useful for account holders managing separate groups or auctions. It is a weaker fit for organizations whose online/mobile volume makes a 5% winning-bid fee unattractive, or for teams seeking a predictable subscription charge instead.

Pros and cons

Pro: Traditional silent and live services are free, including event setup, printed bid sheets, ticket sales, donations, and checkout.
Pro: Donations, admission and raffle tickets, Fund-a-Need, and paddle raises are standard features rather than separate paid add-ons.
Pro: Multiple organizations and auctions can be managed from one login, with event duplication and data import/export tools supporting event administration.
Con: Online and mobile winning bids incur a 5% performance fee, and payment processor fees may apply as well.
Con: The online/mobile fee is tied to winning bids, so it can take a meaningful share of auction proceeds even when the traditional service is free.

Alternatives

Auctria is worth considering for groups seeking a free plan with an explicit annual income ceiling and event limits: Explorer is 0.00 USD per free, with $10,000 total income per year, 250 bidders per event, three team members, unlimited events, and a 1% credit card fee. Compared with BiddingOwl's free traditional services and 5% fee on winning online/mobile bids, those terms may suit organizations whose activity fits the stated caps.

RallyUp offers a free plan with no platform fee, donor tipping, and core fundraising components. Its Android and web support may suit groups that prioritize those free-plan terms; BiddingOwl includes iOS support and its stated auction-format range.

Greater Giving offers event packages with unlimited users, events, and support on a custom proposal; choose it when those package terms are a priority.

Handbid offers a custom license with a standard one-year term, unlimited items, guests, bidders, covered events during the term, and live phone support. It may suit organizations that want those stated license terms instead of BiddingOwl's per-winning-bid online/mobile fee.

BidPal is a paid alternative with an Enterprise plan offered by custom quote.

Kanonu Events charges 30.99 USD per once per registration, paid by the attendee at checkout; card processing is separate at 2.9% + 30¢, also covered by the attendee. Its attendee-paid registration structure may appeal to organizations preferring not to pay those charges themselves.

ReadySetAuction is a paid alternative with a free trial.

GiveBid is another paid alternative.

Verdict

Choose BiddingOwl if your organization runs traditional silent or live auctions and wants ticketing, donations, and other fundraising tools within the same service. Free traditional-auction services are its strongest reason to choose it; the 5% fee on winning online and mobile bids is the clearest reason to look elsewhere if digital auction proceeds are central to your plans.
