Overview

Beyond Labz is virtual lab software for students and instructors who need science activities across several disciplines. Its strongest fit is a course that benefits from repeatable experiments, automated feedback, and a record of how students worked; it is less suited to learners who need labs on a phone or ongoing access without a defined term.

Key features

Experiments across science subjects

Beyond Labz spans chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, and physics, with more than 650 lab activities aligned with textbooks. Students can follow guided activities or make decisions in open-ended experiments, observe outcomes, and repeat the work in a risk-free environment. That range makes the library useful for courses covering different science areas, while textbook alignment gives instructors a practical starting point for matching labs to coursework.

Feedback and procedure records

Auto-graded assessments return immediate feedback, which can help students identify misunderstandings as they work. Lab Cam records and timestamps each step in a lab procedure, giving instructors a process log rather than only a finished result.

LMS assignment workflow

Lab procedures support LTI 1.0, 1.1, and 1.3 compliant LMS platforms, including Canvas, Blackboard, and Moodle. Students can receive, complete, and submit assignments without leaving their LMS, a straightforward fit for courses already organized there.

Pricing

The free Instructor access plan is always free and lets instructors teach, preview, and build assignments. It is an instructor tool, not a free student lab-access tier.

Each subject plan costs 31.95 USD per once and provides 20-week access (140 days), student support, and Lab Cam. Chemistry includes 254 activities in general and organic chemistry; choose it for a chemistry course rather than paying for subjects it will not use. Physics has 103 activities for core physics, and Biology has 73 activities for its core curriculum. These plans are narrower than All Subjects and end after 140 days.

All Subjects costs 41.95 USD per once for one year (365 days) of access to all 650+ activities in chemistry, biology, and physics, with student support and Lab Cam. It is the broader choice for multi-subject study or longer access; the subject plans cost less but cover fewer labs and only 20 weeks. The included learner count is one, so the plans are framed for individual learners rather than a multi-seat purchase.

Platforms

Beyond Labz is offered on web, Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, but device support depends on how students access it. Web-based labs support current public versions of macOS, Windows, ChromeOS, iPadOS, and Android tablets; smartphones are not compatible. Downloaded desktop versions require macOS Yosemite or later or 64-bit Windows 8 or later, plus 4 GB RAM and 3 GB of free disk space. Check those requirements before assigning it, particularly for students relying on phones or older computers.

Who it's for

The product is presented for higher education, high school, online schools, and homeschooling. It suits instructors who want textbook-aligned virtual activities, LMS assignment flow, and procedure records, and students who need practice across science subjects. Support is available Monday through Friday, with a stated aim to respond within 24 hours during support hours. Authorized-user terms allow the company to collect and store information about users, software use, and devices used to access the software.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad subject coverage and more than 650 textbook-aligned activities make it practical for courses that need a reusable library across sciences.
Pros: Immediate assessment feedback and timestamped procedure logs support both student review and instructor oversight.
Pros: LTI integration lets students complete and submit lab assignments inside supported LMS platforms.
Cons: Student access is term-limited: subject plans run 140 days, while All Subjects runs 365 days.
Cons: The one-learner inclusion does not describe a multi-seat option, and web labs cannot be used on smartphones.

Alternatives

PraxiLabs is worth considering when a shorter, low-cost trial of simulations is the priority: its free plan provides one month of access to three simulations, with basic real-time guidance and English and Arabic interfaces. Beyond Labz offers broader stated activity coverage and longer paid access terms.

PhET Interactive Simulations is the stronger fit when free, open-source simulations are the priority. Its simulations are free to students and teachers online or by download; Beyond Labz instead pairs its paid student access with assessments and instructor procedure logs.

ExploreLearning Gizmos is another freemium option, with a free account limited to a collection of Gizmos and paid packages for schools and districts.

MEL Science may suit readers considering a subscription-based science option, with listed plans billed monthly or over six months.

MindLabs is an alternative for homeschool learning plans, including a listed Power Bundle for one educator and up to five students with an access period of one, two, or three years.

Inq-ITS may fit schools or districts seeking tiered plans based on student count, including district-wide and multi-year options.

BrainPOP is another option to consider for family subscriptions.

DreamBox Math is an alternative for readers looking for family subscription terms.

Verdict

Choose Beyond Labz if you teach or study science and want repeatable virtual labs backed by immediate assessment feedback, LMS workflow, and instructor-visible procedure logs. Its breadth and course-oriented tools are the case for it; look elsewhere if students need smartphone access, multiple included seats, or access that does not expire after a paid term.
