Overview

Launchpad is a collaboration and software publishing platform built for open-source projects. It suits maintainers who want code, bugs, package builds, and localization connected in one community workspace. Its free offering is a strong fit for open-source work; commercial teams seeking private project features must first obtain Canonical authorization.

Key features

Git hosting, code review, and merge proposals are tied to bug reports, helping contributors follow changes from issue to proposed fix. Launchpad can also integrate bug reports from Bugzilla, Trac, GitLab, and Mantis, a useful bridge for projects with established trackers. The tradeoff is that this toolset is centered on collaborative software development rather than general-purpose project management.

Built-in CI/CD can build and distribute Debian packages, snaps, rocks, charms, and OCI images. The documented architecture range includes AMD64, AMD64v3, ARM, and RISC-V. That packaging breadth makes Launchpad useful to projects delivering software in those formats, but teams with unrelated build and release needs may find its focus less suitable.

Localization tools support importing, exporting, and sharing translations. Blueprints help projects track ideas and work, and Launchpad Answers organizes community questions and FAQs. A REST-style API, launchpadlib Python client, and webhooks support automation and external integrations, giving technically capable teams ways to connect workflows rather than relying only on manual coordination.

Launchpad documents TLS-secured traffic; package downloads instead rely on cryptographic verification on the client. Its security documentation describes least-privilege access, restrictive networking, and fine-grained permissions, and supports private security bug reports. The security page also says automatic security monitoring was not in place as of July 2023 and notes a recent external penetration test. That dated disclosure is worth considering, especially for teams evaluating sensitive work; private commercial project features are subject to Canonical authorization.

Pricing

The Open-source projects plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is intended for open-source software projects. It gives eligible communities a no-cost starting point for the platform's collaboration and publishing tools. The Commercial subscription has custom pricing and offers private code branches, private bugs by default, private teams and mailing lists, and private PPAs; access requires Canonical authorization. Commercial users should treat that approval requirement as a gating condition, not assume private-project controls are immediately available.

Platforms

Launchpad is available on the web and Linux, with API access and a self-hosted platform option. The combination is relevant to Linux-focused development communities and teams that want programmatic access; it is not presented as a desktop app for every operating system.

Who it's for

Launchpad is best for open-source maintainers and contributors who need an integrated home for Git collaboration, bug coordination, packaging, translation, and community support. Projects that need private commercial workspaces should consider whether Canonical authorization fits their requirements. Teams looking mainly for broad, platform-agnostic project planning or release workflows outside Launchpad's package formats should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Open-source projects can use the plan at no charge, reducing the cost of bringing code, bugs, builds, and community support together.
Pro: Bug tracker integrations and links between code changes and bug reports help projects coordinate contributors across existing tools.
Pro: Built-in package building, translation tools, and automation interfaces cover substantial release and community needs in one platform.
Con: Commercial privacy features require Canonical authorization, adding a prerequisite for teams that cannot keep work public.
Con: The build and distribution formats are specific; projects using other release workflows may not benefit as much from the CI/CD offering.
Con: The security page's disclosure that automatic security monitoring was not in place as of July 2023 is a consideration for risk-sensitive teams.

Alternatives

Reloop is a self-hosted freemium option with a free tier capped at 3,000 emails per month and 100 per day, plus one agent inbox, one webhook, one custom domain, and 45 days of data retention. Choose it when those email-support limits and self-hosting matter more than Launchpad's code hosting and package builds.

DisplayFusion is a Windows freemium app with a free version after a trial and a Pro Standard lifetime license at 34.00 USD per once, billed per machine. It is a different kind of software, so consider it only if your need is Windows display management rather than software collaboration.

Amethyst is a free, open-source macOS tiling window manager with configurable layouts, keyboard shortcuts, and application floating or tiling rules. Choose it for macOS window management, not development collaboration.

awesome is a free Linux X window manager under GNU GPLv2; bug.n is a free Windows window manager under GPL-3.0; dwm is a free window manager for X under the MIT/X Consortium license; i3 is free and open-source software for GNU/Linux and BSD under a BSD license; and niri is a free open-source Wayland compositor under GPL-3.0. These alternatives serve window-management needs rather than Launchpad's software development workflow.

Verdict

Choose Launchpad if you maintain an open-source project and want code collaboration, bug tracking, package distribution, and community tools under one roof without a plan charge. Its main advantage is that breadth, particularly for projects using its supported package formats. Look elsewhere if you need private commercial work without Canonical authorization or a build workflow outside Launchpad's packaging focus.
