Overview

ICEcoder runs in a modern browser, online or offline, and combines code editing with terminal, database and Git management. That can keep routine website work close together, but ICEcoder is not a standalone desktop editor: it requires Apache or a similar web server and PHP 7.0 or newer. Downloads are offered through Git, Docker, Composer, Bash, ZIP and EXE formats, giving administrators several ways to deploy it.

The editing tools include live editing, multiple selections, code assist, folding, bracket matching and automatic indentation. Find and replace can search the current document, open documents, files or filenames using plain text or regular expressions. This is a practical set for editing and locating code across a project, especially when file-level search matters as much as editing the current document.

Key features

Development tools and extensions

Built-in terminal, database and Git management suit developers who want those tasks alongside website editing. Adminer adds database management through a plugin. Users can install plugins or build their own with web languages, while a JavaScript-based API supports further customization. Plugin installation depends on ZipArchive being enabled on the server, so the extension story also requires administrator attention.

Security and team use

ICEcoder includes account login, IP restrictions, controls for banned or restricted files, Bcrypt password encryption and strong password rules. Those controls do not provide isolation between users, however. Although multiple users are supported, ICEcoder is intended for trusted developer teams, not shared deployments where each user's files or access need to be separated. FTP management was removed in version 8 because storing FTP credentials was considered a security concern.

Pricing

ICEcoder's Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes a browser-based code editor with an MIT-licensed IDE framework. There is no paid tier or seat-based pricing in this plan description, making it a straightforward choice for individual developers and trusted teams that can host the required server themselves. The low price does not remove the operational requirements: the server still needs Apache or similar and PHP 7.0 or newer, and plugin installation requires ZipArchive.

Platforms

ICEcoder is accessed through the web and supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and Internet Explorer 11 or newer. The platform coverage includes Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, alongside self-hosted deployment. Its browser access offers flexibility across supported environments, but it remains tied to the server prerequisites rather than behaving like a conventional desktop editor. The IDE framework is MIT licensed; some components have separate licenses identified in LICENSE.md.

Who it's for

ICEcoder is a good fit for web developers or small trusted teams who want editing, search, terminal, database and Git tools in a browser, and who can manage a PHP-capable server. It is less suitable for organizations that need user-by-user security boundaries, or for anyone seeking an editor that can be installed and used without administering a web server. Its privacy policy says collected personal details are not sold, rented or lent to third parties.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad search reaches documents, files and filenames, with both plain-text and regex options, which helps when changes span a site rather than one open file.
Pro: Terminal, database and Git tools are built in, with plugins and an API for customization.
Pro: The free plan includes the browser-based editor and MIT-licensed IDE framework, avoiding a software subscription cost.
Con: Apache or similar plus PHP 7.0 or newer is required, adding hosting and maintenance work before editing can begin.
Con: Multiple users are supported without security isolation, so it is a poor fit for untrusted or segregated users.
Con: Plugins require server-side ZipArchive support, which can constrain installations where server configuration is fixed.

Alternatives

For another free PHP-focused option, Eclipse PHP Development Tools is a PHP IDE framework for Eclipse and supports Linux, macOS and Windows; choose it when that framework approach better fits your workflow. OpenIDE is a freemium IDE for Linux, macOS and Windows, with its operator identified as Open Development Environment LLC and a Moscow legal address.

PaizaCloud Cloud IDE is worth considering if a hosted cloud IDE is preferable: its free tier includes one server, with a server lifetime up to 24 hours and up to four hours of continuous running while the browser remains open. Apache NetBeans is a free option for Linux, macOS and Windows, licensed under Apache License 2.0 for commercial and non-commercial use.

Visual Studio Code is another free choice for Linux, macOS, Windows and the web. CodeLite is free for Linux, macOS and Windows; its GPLv2 IDE permits separately developed plugins to use any license. For an individually priced PHP IDE, NuSphere PhpED offers a Personal plan at 81.00 USD per once, limited to individual developers, with one year of free upgrades and no purchase by companies or business reimbursement. PhpStorm is a paid alternative for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Verdict

Choose ICEcoder if you want a free browser-based environment that brings website editing, project search and development tools together, and you can host it for a trusted team. Its central drawback is not the price but the deployment model: a PHP-capable server is mandatory, and users are not isolated from one another. Look elsewhere if either constraint conflicts with your security or infrastructure needs.
