Overview

Azahar is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator for people who want to use their game libraries on a PC or Android device. It is also a useful fit for homebrew developers and researchers interested in the 3DS ecosystem. Its strongest case is broad desktop availability and practical play features at no cost; Android has a firm minimum requirement, and native iOS support is not planned for the foreseeable future.

Key features

Play, development, and preservation

Azahar aims to let 3DS owners play their libraries with higher resolutions, modern controllers, and save states. Those options give players ways to adapt the experience beyond original hardware, although compatibility still matters on a game-by-game basis. The project also serves homebrew debugging, research, and preservation, so it has a purpose beyond running games.

Graphics upscaling and netplay are supported, and the software is open source. Netplay is a point in its favor for players who need it, but its setup and scope are not established here. Azahar continues Citra’s legacy under active community development, and states that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.

Compatibility and privacy

A per-game compatibility tracker can help players judge whether a title is likely to work, but reports may be outdated. Use it as a starting point rather than a guarantee, especially before building a library around the emulator.

The mobile app privacy policy says the app obtains no information during download or use, requires no registration, and shares no data with third parties because it collects none. That is a reassuring position for Android users who prefer not to create an account or provide app data.

Pricing

Azahar costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the complete free and open-source 3DS emulator; there is no paid tier or trial to weigh against it. That makes it a straightforward choice for players, developers, and researchers who want emulator software without a subscription or upfront charge.

Platforms

Standalone applications are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, with distribution also through Flathub and the Google Play Store. Android requires version 10.0 or later on a 64-bit device, so older or 32-bit devices do not meet the stated minimum.

Libretro cores support RetroArch and similar frontends, including iOS and tvOS. That is frontend support, not a standalone Azahar iOS app: the FAQ says native iOS support is not planned for the foreseeable future and suggests an iOS build of the original Citra instead. Users committed to an iPhone or iPad should not choose Azahar expecting a native app.

Who it's for

Azahar suits 3DS owners who want a free emulator on desktop or a sufficiently recent Android device, particularly if upscaling, modern controllers, or save states matter to them. Its debugging and preservation aims also make it relevant to homebrew developers and people studying the 3DS ecosystem.

It is a weaker fit for iOS users seeking a standalone Azahar app, or for anyone who needs current, definitive compatibility assurances for a particular game. Android users should confirm their device meets the 64-bit Android 10.0 minimum before choosing it.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with no paid plan to unlock the stated emulator purpose.
Pros: Standalone Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android apps cover common desktop systems and Android devices.
Pros: Upscaling, save states, modern-controller support, and netplay make it more flexible than a bare-bones playback option.
Pros: Homebrew debugging, research, and preservation give the project value beyond gameplay.
Cons: Android support starts at Android 10.0 on 64-bit hardware, excluding older or 32-bit devices.
Cons: Compatibility reports may be stale, so the tracker cannot promise a particular title will run.
Cons: Native iOS support is not planned for the foreseeable future; Libretro frontend support does not change that.

Alternatives

Nintendo 3DS Emulators, Game Console Emulators, and Emulator Software are broader starting points for comparing options.

Choose AzaharPlus if you want a free GPL-2.0-licensed 3DS emulator fork with Android, Linux, and Windows support. Panda3DS is another free, open-source option for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows; its official builds are not private- or sponsor-limited.

3Beans is a free option spanning Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows, from a maker who describes an interest in emulation and other niche topics. Mandarine-Neo is a free alternative for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

CitraVR is a free GPL-licensed beta for Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Quest 3S, so consider it for those headsets. LunaDS offers a free plan without a paywall on iOS and macOS, alongside optional one-time $2.00 USD in-app purchases for a supporter unlock or donation.

Borked3DS is a free option for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Citra MMJ is an open-source free Nintendo 3DS emulator for Linux, macOS, and Windows, but its repository has no releases.

Verdict

Choose Azahar if you want a free, community-developed 3DS emulator for desktop or a qualifying Android device, with play features and a parallel role in homebrew, research, and preservation. Its broad standalone desktop support and no-cost open-source model are compelling; look elsewhere if you need a native iOS app or dependable, current compatibility confirmation for a specific game.
